Commercial mango supplier onboarding checklist showing verification of FSSAI license, APEDA, GI certification, and fresh Alphonso fruit grading

Onboarding a commercial Alphonso supplier starts with verification: confirm the FSSAI licence, GI Authorised User number and (for exports) APEDA registration on the official registers, then ask about grading, packing, dispatch and claims in writing. AlphonsoMango.in handles commercial enquiries by request, and terms are confirmed in the quote.

What does supplier onboarding involve for fresh mangoes?

Fresh mango is not a packaged-goods contract. The product is seasonal, perishable and graded by eye and by weight, so onboarding is less about paperwork volume and more about a handful of facts you can pin down in one conversation.

Think in four buckets: identity (who exactly is the seller), compliance (licences), product (variety, grade, ripeness at dispatch) and service (dispatch, transit, claims). A supplier who is vague on any bucket is telling you something. Don't paper over it.

Season matters too. Alphonso usually runs from February to June, and the 2027 season is listed to start 1 February 2027. Onboard before the season, not in the middle of it, when the best slots fill.

Which licences and registrations should you check?

Ask for the numbers, then verify them yourself. These are ours, as published on our own pages.

  • FSSAI Central Licence 10020022011783 (FSSAI page); look it up at fssai.gov.in.
  • GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Alphonso) and AU/6932 (Devgad); check the GI Registry at ipindia.gov.in.
  • APEDA registration 225579 for exports (export page); check apeda.gov.in.

Legal entity matters as well. AlphonsoMango.in is operated by Powle Home Foods, at No. 07, Bhave House, Kale Marg, Bail Bazar, Kurla West, Mumbai 400070. Match the name on the licence to the name on the invoice. If they differ, ask why.

A GI-tagged fruit sold by a registered Authorised User is a precise statement. 'GI-certified farm' is not. Be exact in your own purchase documents.

What should you ask about the fruit itself?

Variety and origin first: Ratnagiri or Devgad, and the seller's sourcing base. We source from 48 villages across those two districts, as our About page explains.

Then grade. Ask for the weight band per fruit in writing. Our published bands are small 150-180 g, medium 180-220 g, large 225-250 g, extra large 250-275 g and jumbo 275-300 g. Retail dozen prices run from Rs 1,849 to Rs 2,999 and are a useful reference point when you read a quote, though commercial terms are separate.

Then ripeness at dispatch. Ours ships semi-ripe so it survives transit; your receiving team must know that. A pallet of semi-ripe fruit left in a cold room will stall. Brief your warehouse staff to ripen at room temperature in a ventilated space and refrigerate only when ripe.

What to ask about logistics and claims

Dispatch cut-offs, courier, tracking, delivery attempts, who is at the receiving end, and how a damaged-lot claim works. Put every answer on paper.

For retail orders our published rules are simple: dispatch Monday to Saturday with a 1 PM IST same-day cut-off, BlueDart for fresh mangoes to serviceable PIN codes, tracking by email and WhatsApp, and damage claims within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video. Commercial arrangements are a separate discussion. We do not publish minimum order quantities, credit terms, volume discounts or GST invoice formats for bulk buyers; ask the team and get them in the quote.

Do not accept 'we will adjust later' on claims. Ask for a time window, evidence required and remedy (replacement or refund) before the first consignment.

A sample RFQ you can copy

  1. Variety and district (Ratnagiri Alphonso, Devgad Alphonso).
  2. Grade band and minimum weight per fruit.
  3. Quantity per delivery and number of deliveries.
  4. Delivery location(s) and the receiving contact.
  5. Required licences and invoice details (name, GSTIN, billing address).
  6. Ripeness at dispatch and packing format.
  7. Claim window and remedy.
  8. Payment terms you want to discuss.

Send this to the team through the business partnership page. Hotels and banquets can use the HORECA page, and resellers the reseller page.

Ripening and the carbide question

This belongs in every supplier file. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the FSS (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. It releases acetylene and can carry arsenic and phosphorus impurities. FSSAI allows controlled ethylene ripening up to 100 ppm. Read the current text at fssai.gov.in.

Ask any supplier for a written statement on ripening. Ours: we do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally (on hay beds, as our FAQ states). On receipt, look for white or grey powder in cartons and for flat, sour flesh near the stone. A float test is only a rough clue; a lab test is the proof.
