For a long-term Alphonso contract, bring numbers: weekly volume by grade, target weeks inside the March to June export window, destination, price basis and your claim terms. AlphonsoMango.in, an APEDA-registered exporter (registration 225579), handles commercial export by enquiry; terms are confirmed in the quote.

Why is a mango contract not like a grain contract?
Because mangoes keep no promises. A grain silo holds last year's harvest. An Alphonso tree gives what the season allows. Flowering, rain at the wrong week, heat spikes and the tree's own habit of bearing heavily one year and lightly the next (alternate bearing) all move the numbers. Our Brand Facts page notes that partner farms are selected partly on managing exactly that.
So a sensible long-term deal is built on flexibility within bands, not on a rigid tonnage. Buyers who insist on a fixed weekly quantity from week one to week seventeen will either overpay for the privilege or be disappointed. Buyers who give a band, say 8 to 12 tonnes a week with a floor, usually get a better conversation.
Also remember the short season. The export page lists March to June, by air freight, for the markets named there: the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan. That is perhaps seventeen weeks. Not a year-round supply line. If you need twelve months, the answer is pulp for the off-season, not fresh fruit.
What should you prepare before you write?
Fill in this list. Send it as your first message.
- Who you are: legal entity, import licence status, years in the category, references you can share.
- What you sell: retail chain, wholesale, foodservice, e-commerce; the customer profile.
- Specification: variety (Alphonso, Ratnagiri or Devgad origin), piece weight band, box size, firmness at arrival.
- Volume: minimum, expected and maximum per week, plus total for the season.
- Schedule: which weeks matter most (Easter, Eid, Akshaya Tritiya or local festivals).
- Logistics: destination airport, your clearing agent, cold-chain at arrival.
- Compliance: the import requirements of your market and who handles each.
- Commercial: proposed price basis, currency, payment method, credit insurance if any.
Then be honest about the unknowns. "Volume depends on our retail listing in March" is a fine sentence. It beats a false number that you revise three weeks in.
Which clauses are worth negotiating?
This is buyer-side guidance. It describes what to ask. It is not a statement of any term we have agreed, because bulk and export terms are not published.
- Price basis. Fixed for the season, fixed per shipment, or indexed. Decide which risk you prefer to carry.
- Incoterm. Who pays and bears risk at each leg: ex-works, FOB, CIF or delivered. Each moves the price line and the claim line.
- Grade and tolerance. A weight band plus an allowed share outside it, for example a stated percentage of pieces that may fall outside the band.
- Quality at arrival. Defect definitions, inspection time window, who inspects, the evidence required: photos, temperature logger data, a third-party report.
- Shortfall and substitution. What happens if the weather cuts volume. A substitute grade, a delay or a credit.
- Force majeure. Weather, flight disruption, regulatory holds. Define them in plain words.
- Payment. Advance, letter of credit, or open account; consider what each costs you.
- Documents. Which export and import documents each side provides. Confirm against current rules for your market.
Some markets impose specific treatment requirements on imported mangoes (for example irradiation or heat treatment). Verify these for your destination with your regulator and agent. Do not assume they are the same in the UAE, the US and Japan.
A sample volume plan, with illustrative numbers
The figures below are invented for planning, not an offer or a capacity statement.
| Phase | Weeks | Illustrative volume per week | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | 4 | 2 tonnes | 8 tonnes |
| Peak | 8 | 6 tonnes | 48 tonnes |
| Late | 4 | 3 tonnes | 12 tonnes |
| Season | 16 | 68 tonnes |
Check it: 4 x 2 = 8; 8 x 6 = 48; 4 x 3 = 12; total 68. In 4 kg boxes, 68 tonnes is 17,000 boxes. Now stress-test it. If the peak underdelivers by 25 percent, you lose 12 tonnes: does your retail partner accept a 70 percent fill rate for two weeks? If not, write that into the plan with a fallback supplier or a pulp substitute.
A plan with a floor, a target and a ceiling for each phase gives both sides room. It also gives the exporter something concrete to confirm.
Start with a trial, not a contract
Order one shipment before the season contract. Document the arrival: box condition, pulp firmness, temperature log, defect rate. Share the results with us within your agreed window. A trial answers questions that no spreadsheet can: how the fruit travels to your cold room, what your customers think, whether the grade fits.
For understanding how our fruit is handled before it leaves, read the Brand Facts page, which describes hand harvesting, grading, hot-water treatment, cooling and hay-bed ripening. Sourcing is described on Our Farmers: 48+ source villages across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. As our Editorial Standards page explains, mangoes are sourced with agricultural specialists, and an outsourced team visits farms before fruit is picked. I will not claim more than those pages say. Compare also with our retail flow in the shipping policy for domestic sales.
Ripened naturally, no carbide
Importers rightly ask about residues. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally (on hay beds, as our FAQ states). The Brand Facts page also states that carbide and pesticide-residue testing is done by Envirocare Labs weekly through the season; ask for what you need to see in your contract.
Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. It releases acetylene and can carry arsenic and phosphorus impurities. FSSAI permits controlled ethylene ripening up to 100 ppm as the safe alternative; check fssai.gov.in for the current text. White or grey powder in cartons is the warning sign. A float test is a rough clue; only a lab test proves it.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a long-term Alphonso supply contract?
Commercial export is handled by enquiry. Send volume bands, grade, target weeks, destination and payment method. Terms, including any season commitment, are confirmed in the quote.
What is the export season?
The export page lists March to June, by air freight. That is roughly sixteen to seventeen weeks. Off-season, Alphonso pulp is available for packaged supply.
Should the contract fix a tonnage?
Better to set a band with a floor, target and ceiling per phase. Mango yield depends on weather and the tree's bearing cycle, so a rigid number invites disputes.
Which markets does the export page name?
The US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan. Import requirements differ by market and may include treatment rules, so verify with your regulator and customs agent.
Do you publish export prices or MOQs?
No. Export prices, minimum quantities and payment terms are not published. They are confirmed in the quote once you share your requirement.
Are your mangoes ripened with carbide?
No. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally, on hay beds as our FAQ states. Carbide is prohibited for fruit ripening in India.
How should I test the first shipment?
Record box condition, firmness, temperature log and defect rate on arrival, with photos, inside your agreed inspection window. Share the results so specification and claim terms for the season can be set from real data.
