What a GI tag does and does not tell you

A Geographical Indication ties a product name to a place. For Ratnagiri Alphonso, the registration protects the name and defines the area in the Konkan where the fruit must be grown. A seller who uses the GI name should be an authorised user of the registration. That is the legal line.

What the tag does not tell you is equally useful to know. It does not say how the fruit was ripened. It does not say how fresh it is, how it was packed, or whether the weight on the box is the weight inside. It is a statement of origin, not of quality on the day it reaches you. Treat it as one check among several.

Our GI details, and how to verify them

  • GI Tag No. 139; certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019.
  • GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Alphonso.
  • GI Authorised User AU/6932 for Devgad.

Do not take our word for it. The GI Registry is public: search for the registration and authorised-user details at ipindia.gov.in. Match the number we show against the register, and be wary of any seller who will not give a number or who gives a number you cannot find. We have collected the paperwork under GI tag certificate articles, and our Brand Facts page lists the same figures. See also the guide on platforms and GI guarantees.

Choosing the box

Grade Fruit weight Dozen price Two dozen
Small 150–180 g ₹1,849 ₹3,499
Medium 180–220 g ₹2,099 ₹3,999
Large 225–250 g ₹2,499 ₹4,699 Ratnagiri
Extra large 250–275 g ₹2,699 ₹4,999
Jumbo 275–300 g ₹2,999 ₹5,399 Ratnagiri

That works out to about ₹154, ₹175, ₹208, ₹225 and ₹250 a fruit. The two-dozen boxes save ₹199, ₹199, ₹299, ₹399 and ₹599 against two single dozens. The fruit in a dozen weighs roughly 1.8–2.16 kg at small up to 3.3–3.6 kg at jumbo, so per kilo the range is around ₹800 to ₹1,030, an approximation from the weight bands. Pick small or medium for everyday eating and larger grades for gifting. Order at the Ratnagiri Alphonso product page or browse the Ratnagiri collection.

Red flags in a GI claim

  1. The word GI appears in the heading but no number appears anywhere.
  2. The seller says GI certified fruit but cannot say whether it is an authorised user.
  3. The price is far below the going range for the grade and the fruit weight is not stated.
  4. The origin is described only as Konkan or Maharashtra, with no place within the GI area.
  5. The fruit is promised ripe on a short deadline, which can point to chemical ripening.
  6. Payment is requested outside a proper checkout.

If you see two or more, walk away. Our article on genuine sellers expands on this.

Ratnagiri versus Devgad

Both come from the Konkan coast, and both are sold here. Ratnagiri Alphonso is the better-known name; Devgad, in Sindhudurg, has its own authorised-user number (AU/6932) and its own small price differences on the larger two-dozen boxes: ₹4,749 against ₹4,699 at large, and ₹5,499 against ₹5,399 at jumbo. Taste preferences are personal, and we do not claim one is better. Compare on the Devgad page and read the Devgad price guide. Fruit is sourced from 48+ villages across Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

How an order reaches you

The fruit is harvested to order, packed against your order and shipped semi-ripe by BlueDart to serviceable PIN codes. Delivery is free with no minimum. Orders placed before 1:00 PM IST dispatch the same day, Monday to Saturday, and transit is next day to metros and many areas, one to three days elsewhere. Payment is prepaid only (UPI, cards, net banking or wallets). Tracking comes by email and WhatsApp. Before dispatch you can edit the address or phone, postpone by up to two days or cancel for a full refund. Claims are accepted within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video and the order number, and approved refunds are paid within 7 business days. The season is usually February to June, and the 2027 season is listed to start on 1 February 2027. See the shipping policy and return policy.

GI is not a ripening guarantee: carbide

A fruit can carry a legitimate GI origin and still be ripened with a banned chemical. So ask separately. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally (on hay beds, as our FAQ states). Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. It releases acetylene and can carry arsenic and phosphorus impurities. The street name is "masala". Controlled ethylene is permitted up to 100 ppm. A white or grey calcium hydroxide residue in the carton is a warning sign. The float test is a rough clue only, and only a lab test proves it.
