Alphonso fruit is a mango cultivar, Mangifera indica 'Alphonso', grown along the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Hapus, Haapus and Hapoos are the Marathi names for the same fruit, and aam is the common word for mango. Wikipedia notes that the cultivar is named after the Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque. (Source: Alphonso mango on Wikipedia.)
The Geographical Indications Registry of India protects the name as GI No. 139 for the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods is a GI authorised user under AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019). (Source: GI Registry of India.) Our Alphonso mango page adds the origin background.
Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso: which should you order?
Both are GI No. 139 fruit, and both are sold by the dozen in five size bands from 150 to 180 g up to 275 to 300 g per fruit. At full ripeness Brix is 18 to 24, with Devgad fruit typically at the upper end (range stated by Powle Home Foods). Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri and Mumbai leans Devgad. Neither choice is wrong. (Source: GI Registry of India; AlphonsoMango.in repeat-order data.)
Try the Ratnagiri Alphonso if you want to follow north India's pattern, or the Devgad Alphonso if you want Mumbai's. A further comparison sits in our Ratnagiri Alphonso box guide.
How is Alphonso fruit harvested, ripened and packed?
Powle Home Foods states that mangoes are picked by hand with a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net, so the tree is never shaken and the fruit never falls. Each fruit is weighed and graded, and a machine scan checks for internal and external defects before packing. (Source: Powle Home Foods records.)
Fruit then travels in air-conditioned vehicles to the Mumbai packhouse and rests on natural hay beds for 24 to 48 hours, with no ethylene chambers and no calcium carbide. The total from harvest to dispatch is 48 to 72 hours. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve inside a partitioned corrugated box.
How should you ripen and store Alphonso at home?
Fruit is dispatched at 70 to 80% ripeness and is fully ripe about three days after delivery. Leave it at room temperature until it gives slightly when pressed. Keep ripe fruit cool and eat it soon afterwards. These are general handling tips, not a guarantee for a particular box.
If a box arrives damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. Resolution is a fresh replacement or store credit, with no physical return. See the return policy for conditions.
How do you check that Alphonso fruit is genuine?
- Ask for the GI authorised-user number, not only a logo. Alphonso falls under GI No. 139.
- Check the FSSAI licence number on the seller's site against the FSSAI records; ours is 10020022011783.
- Ask how the fruit is ripened. Calcium carbide is not permitted for ripening food in India.
- Ask for any test records for the lot you are buying.
A report from Envirocare Labs (NABL accredited) dated 5 April 2025 on an Alphonso sample from an export consignment found all 28 residues tested within Codex limits. The report applies to that sample only; it is not a guarantee for other batches.
When is Alphonso fruit in season?
Three things should be kept apart. The general Alphonso season is February to June, with the peak from March to May. The store-announced 2027 opening is 1 February 2027. Whether a particular shipment is feasible is confirmed when you order or enquire. As of 12 October 2026 fresh fruit is out of season and advance booking is not open.
