Alphonso Mango benefits for Pregnancy - AlphonsoMango.in

For most healthy women, ripe mango in sensible portions is a safe, nourishing fruit during pregnancy. It provides vitamin C, folate and potassium. Wash it well, eat it fully ripe, and ask your doctor about portions if you have gestational diabetes or another condition.

This page is general nutrition information, not medical advice. Pregnancy diets are individual, so use it to prepare questions for your doctor, gynaecologist or dietitian, not to replace their advice.

Is mango safe during pregnancy?

Mangoes for pregnancy — Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad, GI-tagged

For most healthy women, yes. Ripe mango is a normal fruit that many people eat through pregnancy, and there is no general rule that it must be avoided. The sensible conditions are simple: choose fruit that is fully ripe, wash it, peel it, eat it fresh, and keep portions reasonable. Raw, unripe mango is harder to digest and more acidic, and some women find it upsets the stomach.

Some women are told to be more careful. If you have gestational diabetes, a high blood sugar reading, a food allergy or advice to limit sugar, ask your doctor how much mango suits you and when to eat it. We are a mango seller, not a medical service, so we do not give portion advice. What we can do is tell you what the fruit contains and how ours is ripened.

What mango offers during pregnancy

These are widely published figures for mango in general, not for Alphonso alone. A 100 g serving of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, about 43 micrograms of folate, around 11% of the Daily Value, and about 168 mg of potassium, about 6%. Mango also contains dietary fibre and carotenoids, which give the flesh its orange colour.

  • Vitamin C is a nutrient your body needs every day and does not store.
  • Folate matters in pregnancy, but mango is not a replacement for any folic acid supplement your doctor has prescribed. See our note on folic acid in pregnancy.
  • Potassium is a mineral found in many fruits and vegetables.
  • Fibre adds bulk to meals, and many people find fruit helps them feel regular. Drink enough water as well.

No single fruit supplies everything. Mango works as one part of a mixed diet that also includes vegetables, pulses, grains, dairy and the supplements your doctor recommends. For a broader look at the fruit, see our page on the health benefits of Alphonso mango.

Natural sugar and portions

Mango is sweet because it contains natural sugars, and ripe fruit is higher in sugar than raw fruit. For most women this is not a concern in ordinary amounts. For women with gestational diabetes, pre-diabetes or a history of high blood sugar, it can matter. Doctors often suggest pairing fruit with other foods and spreading it through the day, but the right answer depends on your readings, so ask them.

If you are unsure, avoid sweetened mango drinks and packaged desserts, which add sugar on top of the fruit. A fresh fruit eaten plain is easier to count than a milkshake. Our guides on mango and diabetes and mango and weight explain more about sugar.

Food safety and ripening

Pregnancy is a good time to be fussy about how food is handled. Wash the skin before cutting, because a knife can carry anything on the skin into the flesh. Eat cut mango soon, and keep leftovers covered in the fridge. Avoid cut fruit that has been left out for hours, and be careful with juices that are not freshly made.

Ripening method matters too. Mature mangoes either ripen on their own, for example on a bed of hay over several days, or are forced with a chemical. Calcium carbide, which produces acetylene gas, is prohibited for ripening fruit under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. Ask any seller how the fruit was ripened.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.

Colour and smell are rough clues, not proof, and no home test shows how a mango was ripened. We are a FSSAI-licensed seller. Our fruit comes from 48 villages across the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and Alphonso from that belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139). We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). See the Brand Facts page for the details.

Skin, sap and allergy

Mango skin and sap can irritate the mouth or skin of some people, and a few people are allergic to mango itself. If you have never eaten mango, or you have reacted to it before, peel the fruit, try a small piece and stop if you notice itching, swelling or a rash. A pregnant woman with a known allergy should talk to her doctor first. Our page on mango allergy covers the signs.

Season and ordering

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold by us, but Alphonso pulp tins are available all year, from Rs 590. Check the ingredients on the product page before you use pulp, and ask your doctor if you are watching sugar.

Fresh Alphonso is listed from Rs 1,849 per dozen, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Choose a smaller grade if you want fewer, smaller fruit. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery.

A note on cashews

W180 Jumbo Cashew Nuts — premium whole kaju from Konkan farms Masala Cashew Nuts — spicy roasted kaju from Konkan farms

We also sell cashews, including W180 cashew nuts and masala cashew nuts, which some customers keep for the months when fresh mango is out of season. Cashews are a calorie-dense nut, and salted or spiced ones add sodium, so portions and flavours are again a question for your doctor or dietitian. Our nuts during pregnancy guide goes through the general points.

People also ask

Can you eat mango while pregnant?

For most healthy women, yes. Ripe mango in sensible portions is a normal part of a pregnancy diet. Wash and peel it, eat it fresh, and avoid sweetened drinks. If you have gestational diabetes, an allergy or specific dietary advice, ask your doctor how much suits you.

What are the benefits of mango during pregnancy?

Mango provides vitamin C, folate and potassium, about 36 mg, 43 micrograms and 168 mg per 100 g of raw fruit respectively, along with fibre and carotenoids. It does not replace a prescribed folic acid supplement or a balanced diet. Ask your doctor what your own diet needs.

Is unripe or raw mango safe in pregnancy?

Raw mango is more acidic and harder to digest, so some women find it upsets the stomach or causes heartburn. Many people still eat small amounts with salt or spices. If you are prone to acidity, or your doctor has restricted salt, ask them before you eat it.

How do I make sure mango is safe to eat while pregnant?

Choose fully ripe fruit, wash the skin, peel it and eat it fresh. Store cut fruit covered in the fridge. Ask the seller how the fruit was ripened, since selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide is prohibited in India. Stop eating if you notice itching, swelling or a rash.
