Origin and Authenticity
The Alphonso mango traces its name to Afonso de Albuquerque, a fifteenth-century Portuguese general. He grafted a unique plant onto local mango rootstock in the Konkan belt. The result was a variety unlike any other in India.
Today, genuine Alphonso — called Hapus in Marathi and Aam in Hindi — grows only in Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas of coastal Maharashtra. The laterite soil, sea-salt air, and Konkan microclimate are irreplaceable. A mango labelled Alphonso from any other region is not authentic Hapus.
What does GI Tag GI No. 139 mean for Alphonso mango?
The Geographical Indication (GI) tag GI No. 139 protects the name "Alphonso Mango" under Indian law. Only authorised producers from the designated Konkan districts may sell fruit under this name. AlphonsoMango.in holds GI Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued 16 October 2019 by the GI Registry (certificate 4163).
When you buy a box labelled GI-tagged Hapus from us, you receive legal assurance of geographic origin — not just a marketing claim.
Where exactly does AlphonsoMango.in source its fruit?
Prashant Powle, who oversees sourcing, works directly with farmers across 48 villages in Ratnagiri and Devgad. Villages such as Rajapur, Lanja, and coastal Devgad tehsil supply the bulk of each season's harvest. No middlemen. No cold-storage fruit carried over from the previous week. Each box is packed within 24 hours of grading.
Health Benefits of Alphonso Mango
Alphonso mango is not only the sweetest mango in India. It is also one of the most nutrient-dense tropical fruits available during the summer months.
Immune System Champion: Mango Vitamin C Benefit
One serving of Alphonso mango (approximately 100 g) delivers 36–46 mg of Vitamin C. That is roughly 40–50% of an adult's daily requirement. Vitamin C stimulates white blood cell production. It also functions as an antioxidant, neutralising free radicals before they damage cells.
Skin's Radiant Ally
Vitamin A and beta-carotene in Alphonso mango support collagen synthesis and skin cell renewal. The fruit's antioxidant load — mangiferin, quercetin, and kaempferol — reduces oxidative stress that accelerates skin ageing. Regular consumption during the season visibly improves skin tone for many customers, particularly those with dull or dry complexions.
Heart's Happy Helper
Alphonso mango contains potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin B6. Potassium relaxes arterial walls and helps regulate blood pressure. Magnesium supports steady heart rhythm. The fruit's natural fructose and sucrose deliver fast energy without the inflammatory spike associated with refined sugar. This makes it suitable as a natural energy source even in early-stage cardiovascular health management — though anyone with a diagnosed heart condition should consult their doctor before making dietary changes.
Digestive Delight
A 100 g serving provides 1.6 g of dietary fibre. Alphonso mango also contains amylases — digestive enzymes that break down complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars. The combination of soluble fibre and natural enzymes makes this mango one of the easiest tropical fruits to digest. Customers who find other mangoes heavy or gassy often tolerate Hapus with no discomfort.
Essential Vitamin Bonanza
Beyond Vitamin C and A, Alphonso mango supplies:
- Vitamin K — supports blood clotting and bone mineralisation
- Vitamin B6 — supports brain neurotransmitter synthesis
- Folate — critical for cell division and pregnancy health
- Copper — supports red blood cell formation
Beyond the Bite: Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties
Mangiferin — a polyphenol unique to the mango genus — is found in high concentrations in Alphonso fruit and its peel. Research published in peer-reviewed food chemistry journals identifies mangiferin as a potent anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic compound. The peel is not typically eaten, but the pulp retains measurable mangiferin levels that contribute to the fruit's health profile.
A Feast for All Senses
The aroma of ripe Alphonso comes from terpene compounds — linalool, myrcene, and ocimene — that no artificial flavouring replicates. The Brix of a properly ripened Ratnagiri Alphonso sits at 18 to 24°, which is measurably sweeter than most other Indian mango varieties. Eating one requires no cutlery. The pulp is smooth, fibre-free, and dissolves on the tongue.
Nutrition and Calories: What Are the Alphonso Mango Calories?
How many calories in 100 g of Alphonso mango?
100 g of Alphonso mango contains approximately 60–70 kcal. The macronutrient split is roughly: carbohydrates 15–17 g, protein 0.8 g, fat 0.4 g, dietary fibre 1.6 g.
What are the calories in 2 Alphonso mangoes?
Two medium Alphonso mangoes weigh approximately 250–300 g combined. That delivers 150–210 kcal, 37–51 g of carbohydrates, and 4–5 g of dietary fibre. For context, this is roughly the same calorie count as a medium banana plus a small apple — with a significantly higher micronutrient load.
Is Alphonso mango safe for people watching sugar intake?
Alphonso mango has a glycaemic index of approximately 51–56 — classified as medium. The fibre content slows glucose absorption. Eating Alphonso in moderation (one to two fruits per sitting) does not produce the sharp blood glucose spike associated with refined sugar. Individuals with Type 2 diabetes should monitor their own response and consult their physician.
Ripening and Storage
What is natural hay-bed ripening?
Hay-bed ripening is the traditional Konkan method. Harvested mangoes are laid on beds of dry paddy straw in a cool, ventilated room. The straw insulates the fruit, maintains even temperature, and allows ethylene — the fruit's own ripening hormone — to work gradually over 3–5 days. The result is uniform colour development, peak Brix, and a shelf life of 4–6 days post-ripening.
We do not use calcium carbide. Carbide-ripened mangoes ripen from outside in, producing an orange skin over unripe, starchy flesh. Hay-ripened Alphonso ripens from inside out — the pulp turns golden before the skin colour fully develops.
How do I store Alphonso mango at home?
- Unripe fruit: store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, for 2–4 days.
- Ripe fruit: refrigerate for up to 2 days. Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before eating.
- Do not store unripe mangoes in the refrigerator — cold arrests ripening permanently.
- Cut fruit: store in an airtight container in the refrigerator, consume within 24 hours.
Mango Season: When to Buy Alphonso
When does Alphonso mango season start and end?
Ratnagiri Alphonso season typically opens mid-March and closes by mid-May. Devgad Alphonso runs slightly later — April through June. The overlap in April is the peak of the season: fruit is at maximum Brix, availability is highest, and prices are most competitive.
Outside these months, genuine fresh Alphonso is not available. We do not sell stored or cold-chain-extended fruit to simulate off-season availability. Alphonso mango pulp and Aamras are available year-round as alternatives.
Can I pre-order Alphonso mango before the season?
Yes. Pre-orders open from January. We dispatch the moment the first harvest of the season passes our grading check. Pre-ordering guarantees your allocation when supply is tight in the opening weeks of March.
