To export mangoes from India you need an Import-Export Code, an APEDA registration, a phytosanitary certificate and an importer who knows the destination rules. Rules differ by country and change, so check current rules with your importer or customs agent before you ship.
The short answer: how to export mangoes from India
India grows roughly 43% of the world's mangoes, about 26 million tonnes in 2023 by FAO figures that also include mangosteens and guavas. A great deal of that fruit is eaten at home, and a small share is exported fresh, as pulp or in other processed forms. Exporting is a regulated trade, and each step depends on who you are and where the fruit is going.
I run AlphonsoMango.in, which sells Alphonso within India and ships directly to the UAE. I am not a customs consultant, and nothing here replaces advice from your importer, customs agent or the authorities named below. What follows is the general sequence, written in plain words.
Steps to export mangoes from India
| Step | What happens | Who you deal with |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Business set-up | Register the business and open a bank account that can handle foreign payments. | Your bank and your accountant |
| 2. Import-Export Code | Apply for an IEC, which exporters of goods generally need. | DGFT |
| 3. APEDA registration | Register as an exporter of fresh fruit with APEDA, the agency that promotes agricultural exports. | APEDA |
| 4. Find an importer | Agree product, grade, quantity, price and payment terms with a buyer abroad. | The importer |
| 5. Check destination rules | Confirm what the destination country allows and what it demands before harvest. | Importer and customs agent |
| 6. Source and pack | Buy fruit at the right maturity, grade it and pack it for the journey. | Growers and packhouse |
| 7. Certificates and treatment | Obtain the plant health certificate and any treatment the destination requires. | Plant quarantine authority |
| 8. Ship and clear | Book air or sea freight and complete export and import clearance. | Freight forwarder and customs agent |
Skipping step 5 is the costliest mistake. A box that is packed well but does not meet the destination's rules can be refused at the port, and fresh fruit does not wait.
Documents exporters usually need
- Import-Export Code (IEC). Issued by DGFT.
- APEDA registration. Fresh fruit exporters register with APEDA.
- Phytosanitary certificate. A plant health certificate issued by the plant quarantine authority, stating that the consignment was inspected.
- Commercial invoice and packing list. Prepared by the exporter.
- Certificate of origin. Needed by many importers and some trade agreements.
- Transport documents. An airway bill or bill of lading.
Your importer will tell you if the destination asks for more. Check current rules with your importer or customs agent, because requirements change.
Destination rules: USA, UAE and others
The United States banned Indian mangoes in 1989 and lifted the ban in April 2007. Indian mangoes may enter under conditions that include irradiation before shipment. The Federal Register notice of 17 November 2006 set out those conditions as a proposed rule. Check current rules with your importer or customs agent before you plan a US shipment.
Other destinations, such as the UK, Singapore, Japan and the Gulf, have their own plant health and labelling rules, and some require specific treatments. We do not give a country-by-country list here, because rules change and a stale list is worse than none. Ask the importer for the official requirement in writing.
Which mangoes and forms are exported
Fresh Alphonso is the variety most associated with premium export from the Konkan. APEDA also lists mango pulp as an export product, with varieties that include Alphonso, Totapuri, Neelum and Kesar, sterilised and packed in aseptic bags or hermetically sealed cans. Pulp keeps far longer than fresh fruit, so it suits buyers who cannot manage a fresh-fruit cold chain.
Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is covered by the Alphonso GI, No. 139. Fresh Alphonso is harvested from about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, so a buyer abroad has to plan around that window.
What we ship and what we do not
Here is exactly where we stand.
- We ship directly to the UAE.
- For other countries, including the UK, Singapore, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, shipments have been arranged through the customer's contact abroad. That is not a standard service.
- We do not offer a ready export price list. Write to us first with the destination, the product, the quantity and the dates.
Our own fruit is sourced from 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. The Indian ban on carbide ripening is in Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, and an importer may ask about ripening for that reason.

Sending a gift versus exporting for trade
Many people who search for how to export mangoes actually want to send a box to a relative abroad. That is a different problem from trade. Fresh fruit sent as a parcel is still subject to the destination's import rules, and some countries do not accept it at all. Ask the recipient to check their customs and agriculture authority first. If the recipient is in the UAE, write to us. For anything else, we will tell you honestly whether we can help.
For gifts within India, start from the gifting page. For a full guide to the Indian side of sending mangoes to the United States, see how to export mangoes from India to the USA.
Mistakes to avoid
- Booking freight before the importer confirms the destination rules.
- Harvesting at the wrong maturity for the transit time.
- Treating a rough clue, such as skin colour, as proof of quality.
- Quoting a price without fixing grade, count and packing.
- Promising a delivery date for a perishable product.
