Mango export from India to the USA is allowed under strict rules. Fruit must come from an APEDA-registered exporter, carry a phytosanitary certificate and be irradiated under USDA-APHIS supervision. Rules change, so check with your importer. We do not run a standard USA shipping service.
Can you export mangoes from India to the USA?
Yes, under strict conditions. Indian mangoes have entered the United States legally since 2007, after a bilateral agreement between the two governments. The fruit has to pass an inspection and treatment programme designed to keep fruit flies and the mango seed weevil out of American orchards.
In practice, three parties have to be in order.
- The Indian exporter: holds an Importer-Exporter Code and is registered with APEDA, the authority that handles fresh fruit exports.
- The treatment facility: an approved irradiation facility in India, working under USDA-APHIS supervision.
- The US importer: acts as importer of record, files the entry with customs and meets FDA requirements for food imports.
If one of these is missing, the shipment does not move. First-time buyers usually need an experienced exporter.
A few people also ask about carrying mangoes in a suitcase or sending a box by courier. Those cases have different rules. We answer the suitcase question in the FAQ below, and the short version is that you should not assume it is allowed.
Step-by-step export process
The order of work matters. Here is the usual sequence for a commercial consignment.
- Agree the specification. Variety, grade, fruit weight, carton size and delivery week. Fix this in writing before anyone books freight.
- Check registrations. Confirm that the exporter has an IEC and APEDA registration, and check with APEDA which facilities are approved.
- Harvest and pack. Fruit is picked at the right maturity and packed in cartons suited to the transport mode.
- Irradiate. The fruit is treated at an approved facility with APHIS oversight, and records are kept for each lot.
- Get the certificate. A phytosanitary certificate is issued for the consignment, and the commercial invoice and packing list are prepared.
- Book transport. Air freight for small and premium lots, or a reefer container for large volumes. Your forwarder handles the booking and customs.
- Clear US entry. The importer of record files the entry, the shipment is inspected on arrival, and the fruit goes to the buyer.
Timing is tight. Alphonso is harvested from about February to June, and the best supply is March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside this window. Ask any supplier of fresh Alphonso where the fruit was grown and when it was harvested.
On cost, there is no single price for exporting from India to the USA. The total includes fruit cost, packing, irradiation, certificates, freight, insurance, import duty, and the importer's own handling and margin. Air freight is much more expensive than sea freight. Ask every supplier for a quotation with clear freight terms (FOB or CIF) so you can compare like with like.
Irradiation and USDA-APHIS rules
Irradiation is the step buyers most often ask about. US rules require mangoes from India to be treated with irradiation before they ship, and you should check current rules with your importer or customs agent. Low-dose radiation stops insects such as fruit flies and the seed weevil from developing. Irradiated food does not become radioactive.
The treatment is done at an approved facility in India under USDA-APHIS oversight, not at the US port.
A few points to check before you order:
- The facility must be on the approved list for the current season.
- Treatment records must be traceable to the lot you buy.
- Rules, doses and approved facilities are updated by the authorities. Do not rely on an old blog post, including this one. Confirm the current rules with APEDA and USDA-APHIS, and check them with your importer or customs agent.
We will not quote a dose or promise a clearance outcome on a web page. The rules belong to the authorities, and they decide.
Which mango varieties we sell
Alphonso (Hapus) is known for its saffron colour, low fibre and strong aroma. Kesar from Gujarat is another well-known variety with a different taste.
| Variety | Origin | Season | Best use | From our store |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alphonso (Hapus) | Ratnagiri, Devgad | February to June, best March to May | Eating fresh, gifts | From Rs 1,849 per dozen |
| Kesar | Gujarat | Check the product page | Eating fresh, aamras | From Rs 999 per box |
| Alphonso pulp | Not applicable | All year | Desserts, drinks, kitchens | From Rs 590 per tin |
Prices are from the live store and may change. Check the product page for the current price. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
For buyers who cannot rely on the fresh-fruit window, Alphonso pulp in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins does not depend on the harvest window. Pulp has its own import rules, so check those too.
