Where are alphonso mangoes grown - AlphonsoMango.in

Alphonso mangoes are grown mainly on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, India, in the Ratnagiri district and in Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district. This coastal belt on the Arabian Sea is the home of the Alphonso, or Hapus. We source our fruit from 48 villages across it.

Where Alphonso mangoes are grown

Where are Alphonso mangoes grown — Konkan coast orchards in Ratnagiri and Devgad

The answer is the Konkan. Konkan is a stretch of the western coast of India between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau, and Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are among its districts. The Alphonso mangoes people prize, sold as Hapus or Hapus Aam in Maharashtra, come from orchards in this region. If your question is which state grows Alphonso mangoes, the state is Maharashtra.

Two names matter most when you are buying: Ratnagiri and Devgad. They are the two places printed on most boxes, and both sell the same variety.

The Ratnagiri and Devgad belt

Where the names come from
Name What it is Where it sits
Konkan The coastal strip of western India Between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau
Ratnagiri A district of Maharashtra, with its headquarters at Ratnagiri town Central Konkan coast
Sindhudurg A district of the Konkan division South of Ratnagiri
Devgad A taluka inside Sindhudurg district Known for locally grown Alphonso

Note the difference in level: Ratnagiri is a district, while Devgad is a taluka inside the Sindhudurg district. Both belong to the same Konkan Alphonso belt, and both produce the same variety. We do not rank one above the other. If you want to read more on each, see our pages on Devgad mango and Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes.

Where are Hapus mangoes grown — Alphonso mango orchards on the Konkan coast

The GI Registry records the Alphonso under GI No. 139, and the Devgad Alphonso application (No. 379) is shown as merged with it. That is why the label "GI-certified Alphonso" points to the Konkan, not to any other region. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), and you can read the details on our Brand Facts page.

Is Alphonso grown outside the Konkan?

The Alphonso variety is also grown in other parts of India, and mangoes with the same name can be sold from elsewhere. The difference is the place. When the GI Registry speaks of Alphonso, it speaks of the Konkan. If a box does not tell you the district or taluka, the name "Alphonso" on its own tells you very little about where the fruit grew.

Mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic, which is why named varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting rather than from seed. Every Alphonso tree is a graft of the same variety, which is how the fruit stays true to type wherever the tree stands. The place still matters to the buyer, because origin is what a seller can name, document and be held to.

People who search for the Alphonso mango place, state or origin are usually asking one question: where does the genuine fruit come from? In every case the answer is the Konkan, with Ratnagiri and Devgad as the best-known names on the box.

The name and the variety

The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. In Maharashtra the fruit became known as Hapus, a local rendering of the name. Spellings such as alfonso or alphonse all refer to the same fruit.

Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, and the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. From harvest to ripening takes about 15 days. These are general descriptions of the variety, not promises about any one box.

Harvest and season

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold by us, while Alphonso pulp tins are available all year. See our Alphonso mango season page for the broader calendar.

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, and all Alphonso is harvested at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hours. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.

From the tree to your door

Mangoes for our boxes are picked mature but firm, brought to ripeness on hay beds, packed and sent out by Blue Dart. Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening. Once the box reaches you, keep it at room temperature, away from direct sun, and eat each fruit when it smells sweet at the stalk and gives slightly under a gentle press. Our guide to ripening Alphonso mango has the details.

How to check where your mango was grown

  • Ask for the district or taluka, not just the word "Alphonso".
  • Ask for the GI Authorised User certificate number and what GI number it falls under.
  • Check the season. Fresh Alphonso is a February to June fruit.
  • Ask how it was ripened. Carbide is prohibited for fruit ripening in India, so a seller should answer plainly.
  • Look for a seller who shows documents, such as an FSSAI licence number.

Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus goes through these steps in detail.

Why does origin matter when you buy? Because it is the one part of a mango's story that a seller can document and that you can ask about. Taste, price and ripeness all vary from box to box, but a seller who names the district, shows a certificate and explains the ripening method has given you something you can check. A seller who cannot has not.
