Vitamin C Fruits in India

Vitamin C Fruits in India - AlphonsoMango.in

Mango is one food that contributes vitamin C to a balanced diet. Raw mango provides about 36 mg per 100 g, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, and this page explains what that figure does and does not tell you.

What vitamin C does in the body

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for normal function. It is involved in the making of collagen, in the absorption of iron from plant foods and in the normal working of the immune system. Your body does not store large amounts of it, so a daily intake from food matters.

This page gives general information about vitamin C in mango. It does not make health claims about treating or preventing any condition, and it does not replace advice from your doctor or a registered dietitian about your own diet.

How much vitamin C is in mango

Raw mango, in general, provides about 36 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams, which is roughly 40% of the Daily Value. That figure describes raw mango in general. It is not a measurement of a particular Alphonso fruit, and it does not describe ripe fruit, which has a different profile.

The Daily Value is a reference figure used on food labels. It is a guide to how much a food contributes to a day's total, not a target that every person must reach from one food. Most people get vitamin C from a mix of fruit and vegetables across the day.

Other food sources of vitamin C

Vitamin C is found in many fruit and vegetables, and no single food is needed to meet your daily intake. Eating a range of fruit and vegetables across the day is the simplest way to get what you need. Cooking can reduce the vitamin C in some vegetables, so lightly cooked or raw vegetables keep more of it.

  • Fruit: mango, citrus, guava and other fruit can be eaten fresh, in a salad or blended into a drink.
  • Vegetables: peppers, leafy greens and tomatoes add vitamin C to lunch and dinner.
  • Variety: rotating fruit and vegetables through the week gives a wider mix of nutrients than one food alone.

If you have a health condition, or you take medicines, ask your doctor how much of any food to include. This is especially important for people who manage diabetes, for people who are pregnant, and for anyone who is considering a supplement.

Ripeness, storage and how vitamin C changes

Vitamin C is sensitive to heat, light and time. Fruit that is kept for a long time, or cut and left open, can lose some of it. That is one reason to cut mango shortly before you eat it, and to keep cut pieces covered in the fridge for a short time. Plan your eating so that ripe fruit is used within a few days, rather than left for a long period.

Ripe Alphonso is best eaten within a few days of reaching the stage you want. Whole fruit keeps longer in the fridge once it is ripe. Pulp keeps longer again and can be useful when fresh fruit is out of season. Our guide to ripening Alphonso mangoes at home explains how to bring fruit to the stage you prefer.

Alphonso and vitamin C: what we can and cannot say

Alphonso is a mango variety from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. We do not have a sourced, Alphonso-specific figure for vitamin C, so this page does not give one. The 36 mg figure above is for raw mango in general. If you need an exact amount for a meal plan, use a food composition table or ask a dietitian.

A useful habit is to note the food label or nutrition table for any product you buy, and to compare figures from the same source. Figures for raw fruit, dried fruit and pulp can differ a great deal, so a number from one source should not be used for another.

What we can say is that Alphonso is sold by the dozen from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, with fruit sourced from 55 villages of that belt, and that the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. Those are facts about the fruit and the pulp, not about its vitamin content.

How we ripen our mangoes

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, Regulation 2.3.5. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and we ripen our Alphonso naturally on hay beds.

When you buy mangoes for a diet plan, ask any seller how the fruit was ripened and who packed it. A seller who names the variety, the district or taluka, the ripening method and the delivery partner is easier to check. Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus mango sets out the questions to ask.

People also ask

How much vitamin C is in a mango?

Raw mango, in general, provides about 36 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams, roughly 40% of the Daily Value. That figure is for raw mango in general, not for a specific Alphonso fruit. Ripe fruit may differ, so use it as a rough guide rather than an exact amount.

Is Alphonso mango higher in vitamin C?

We do not have a sourced, Alphonso-specific figure for vitamin C, so we do not say that Alphonso is higher or lower than other mangoes. If you need an exact amount for a meal plan, use a food composition table or ask a registered dietitian.

Does cooking or storage reduce vitamin C in fruit?

Vitamin C is sensitive to heat, light and time. Fruit kept for a long time, or cut and left open, can lose some of it. Cut mango shortly before eating, keep cut pieces covered in the fridge, and use pulp for longer storage when fresh fruit is out of season.

Can mango help me meet my daily vitamin C needs?

Mango can contribute to your daily vitamin C alongside other fruit and vegetables. A serving of raw mango provides a useful share of the Daily Value, but no single food meets the whole daily need. Talk to your doctor or dietitian if you need a plan for your own diet.
