Alphonso mango in Bareilly
Bareilly sits in the Rohilkhand region of Uttar Pradesh, a state with a deep mango culture of its own. Alphonso, called Hapus in Maharashtra, grows on the Konkan coast, not in Uttar Pradesh. That is why Bareilly buyers who want it order from the source and have it couriered. We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in.

We send Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad. The two names stand for the same variety, so we do not rank one above the other. You can see both on the mango collection, and our guide to Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso explains where each name comes from.
Search phrases such as "Alphonso aam Bareilly" and "Hapus aam Bareilly" all point to this one fruit. If you prefer to read in Hindi, our Alphonso aam guide in Hindi covers the basics.
Alphonso next to the mangoes Uttar Pradesh knows
Uttar Pradesh is best known for Dasheri, grown around Malihabad near Lucknow, and for Langra, which is linked with Varanasi. Chausa is another well-known variety of the region. People in Bareilly often grew up eating these, so it helps to say what Alphonso is and is not.
- Origin: Alphonso is a Konkan fruit. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries.
- Size: Alphonso fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g, so it is small next to many northern mangoes.
- Pulp: Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous.
- Buying unit: we sell it by the dozen, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
We do not claim Alphonso beats Dasheri or Langra. They are different fruits with different seasons and uses. Many families in Bareilly buy a box of Alphonso alongside their usual mangoes, mainly for gifting or for a special meal. If you want Dasheri as well, see our Dasheri mango listing when it is in season.

Choosing a size for your family
Alphonso is graded by weight, and the grade decides how many fruit fit in a dozen and what the dozen costs. Smaller fruit suits everyday eating, cutting into bowls or making aamras. Larger fruit is better for gifting, where each mango is meant to be seen. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, so a household of four can finish a small-grade dozen in a few days once the fruit is ripe.
If you are buying for the first time, start with one dozen rather than several. You will learn how quickly the fruit ripens at your home and how much your family actually eats. Ripe Alphonso does not keep for long, so ordering in two smaller lots a few weeks apart often works better than one very large box. Our note on the minimum order quantity answers the basic question about box sizes.
Checking that your Alphonso is genuine
Alphonso fetches a higher price than most mangoes, so it pays to check what you are buying. The checks below apply to any seller, including us.
- Place and variety: the listing should say Alphonso or Hapus and name Ratnagiri or Devgad.
- GI paperwork: Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Ask any seller for the number behind a GI claim.
- Food licence: look for an FSSAI licence number.
- Ripening: ask how the fruit was ripened.
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. No single look or smell proves how a mango was ripened, and a bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof.

Ripening and storing the box
Keep the mangoes at room temperature, out of direct sun, and let them soften in their own time. Summers in Uttar Pradesh are hot, so check the fruit every day. A sweet fragrance near the stalk and a slight give near the shoulder are the signs to look for. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit, because cold slows ripening and can dull the flavour. Once soft, eat the mango soon or chill it briefly.
