India grows over 1,000 named mango varieties, but only a few dozen are grown at commercial scale. The types of mangoes most people meet are Alphonso, Kesar, Pairi, Totapuri, Dasheri, Langra, Chausa and Himsagar. Each differs by region, season, taste and best use.
When people ask about the types of mangoes in India, they usually want one of two things: a list of names, or help choosing between them. This guide does both. India is the world's largest mango producer and grows over 1,000 named varieties, though only a few dozen are grown at commercial scale. The rest are local types known in their own district. I am Prashant Powle, and I run AlphonsoMango.in. We sell Alphonso, Kesar and Pairi, so I know those three best, and I have kept the rest of the list to widely documented facts.
How many types of mangoes does India have?
The commonly quoted figure is more than 1,000 varieties, and the number depends on how you count local seedlings. Each region has favourites because climate, soil and tradition differ. Maharashtra and Gujarat lean to Alphonso, Kesar and Pairi. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar lean to Dasheri, Langra and Chausa. West Bengal has Himsagar. The south has Banganapalli, Neelam, Badami and Imam Pasand.

Alphonso (Hapus)
Alphonso is the mango most people picture when they hear "premium". It comes from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, and Ratnagiri and Devgad are its best-known areas. The fruit is sweet and fragrant, with soft pulp and little fibre. It is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The Alphonso GI is No. 139. You can read how the name and the grafting story began in our piece on the origin of the Alphonso mango. Named varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting, because mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic.
We sell Alphonso from Ratnagiri and from Devgad. The Ratnagiri Alphonso and the Devgad Alphonso are the same variety, grown in two areas. Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. We do not rank one above the other. Pick by grade, fruit size and budget. Both are sold by the dozen from Rs 1,849, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), and we source across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. Details are on our Brand Facts page.
Kesar, Pairi and Totapuri
Kesar takes its name from the Hindi word for saffron. It is grown around the Girnar hills and Gir region of Gujarat, and the pulp is deep orange. It is sweet with mild acidity, and Kesar is known for its aroma. It blends well, so it is a favourite for milkshakes and ice cream. See our Kesar mango listing, from Rs 999 per box. Kesar is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp.
Pairi (also written Payari) is a Maharashtra favourite with a sweet and slightly sour taste and a strong aroma. Pairi is Rs 2,799 for one dozen; check the Pairi mango page for the current price.
Totapuri is named for the parrot-beak tip of its long, narrow fruit. It is tangy and firm, not as sweet as Alphonso, and it is the usual choice for pickles, chutneys and a lot of commercial pulp. If you want to eat mango fresh, pick something else.
North and East India
Dasheri is the best-known mango of North India, tied to the Malihabad belt near Lucknow. It is fragrant and thin-skinned, and arrives in June and July. Langra is from Varanasi, and its skin often stays green even when the fruit is ripe, which confuses first-time buyers. Chausa is a late-season, honey-sweet mango from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Himsagar, grown in West Bengal, has thick, sweet pulp and a short season.
South India
Banganapalli is a large, oblong mango grown mainly in Andhra Pradesh. It is sweet with a faint tang, and it is easy to slice. Badami from Karnataka is sometimes sold as Karnataka Hapus, but it is a separate variety from Alphonso. Neelam is smaller and reliably sweet, and it comes later in the season. Imam Pasand, linked to Hyderabad, has creamy, smooth pulp with few fibres. Mallika is a cross between Neelam and Dasheri and has a strong aroma.
Choosing between mango types
- For eating fresh: Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Langra, Himsagar and Imam Pasand all have loyal followings. Taste is personal.
- For aamras: Alphonso or Kesar, because the pulp is smooth with little fibre.
- For pickles: raw Totapuri or other firm, sour green mangoes.
- For a gift: Alphonso is the variety most people recognise.
- Outside the fresh season: Alphonso pulp tins are available all year from Rs 590.

People also ask
How many types of mangoes are there in India?
India has over 1,000 named mango varieties, and the exact count depends on how you treat local seedlings. Only a few dozen are grown at commercial scale. The ones most people meet are Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Langra, Chausa, Totapuri, Himsagar, Banganapalli, Badami and Neelam.
What is the difference between Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso?
Both are the same Alphonso variety from the Konkan coast. Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Fruit varies by orchard, grade and season, so we do not rank one above the other. Compare grade, fruit size and price on the product pages.
Are Badami and Alphonso the same mango?
No. Badami is a separate variety, grown mainly in Karnataka, and it is sometimes sold as Karnataka Hapus or Karnataka Alphonso. Alphonso (Hapus) is the Konkan variety under GI No. 139. The two can look alike, so ask the seller for the variety and region.
Which type of mango is best for pickles?
Raw Totapuri is the usual pick for pickles and chutneys because it is firm, sour and holds its shape. Raw Alphonso is also used by some families. Choose hard, green, unblemished fruit. Keep the softer, ripening mangoes for eating fresh or making aamras instead.
Which mango type is best for milkshakes?
Kesar is a popular choice for milkshakes and ice cream, because it is sweet with mild acidity and blends smoothly. Alphonso also works and gives a richer, more floral flavour. For use outside the fresh season, Alphonso pulp is available all year. Choose by taste and budget.
