A mango smoothie for baby is ripe mango blended smooth, sieved, and thinned with water, expressed breast milk or formula for infants, or with milk and curd for toddlers. Alphonso suits it because the pulp is non-fibrous. Introduce it after your paediatrician clears solids.
Before you make a mango smoothie for your baby
We are Powle Home Foods, the family behind AlphonsoMango.in, and we sell mangoes, not medical advice. Many paediatric guidelines suggest starting solids at around six months, one new food at a time, but every baby is different. Ask your paediatrician before you introduce mango, and again if your baby has had an allergic reaction to any fruit.
- Offer a new food on its own for a few days before mixing it with others, so a reaction is easy to trace.
- Do not give honey to a baby under one year. The recipe below has no honey and no added sugar.
- For a baby under one year, thin the puree with water, expressed breast milk or formula rather than cow's milk as a drink. Curd and milk in small amounts are a question for your paediatrician.
- Serve it cool, not ice cold, and serve it fresh. Do not keep a blended smoothie for the next day.
Ripe mango is naturally sweet, so a baby smoothie needs nothing added. That is the whole point of the recipe: one fruit, blended and thinned.
Why Alphonso suits a baby smoothie
The main job with a baby food is texture. Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous, so it blends to a smooth puree with very little to catch in a sieve. Fibrous varieties leave strands that a baby cannot manage. Kesar pulp is smooth too, though a little more textured, and either works if you sieve it.
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide (acetylene) gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Ask any seller how their fruit was ripened before you buy it for a baby. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions, and no home test proves the answer.
Fresh fruit comes from our Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso page in season. Between seasons, a tin of Alphonso mango pulp works; read the label for added sugar and ask your paediatrician whether a sweetened pulp suits your baby.
Mango smoothie for baby: recipe
Mango smoothie for baby: ripe Alphonso mango blended smooth, pressed through a sieve and thinned to a spoonable or sippable texture for infants and toddlers.
Prep time: 10 minutes. Makes 2 small servings. Cuisine: Indian. Course: baby food.
Ingredients
- 1 ripe Alphonso mango, about 150 g of pulp
- 2 to 4 tablespoons water, expressed breast milk or formula for an infant, or milk for a toddler
- 1 tablespoon plain curd, for a toddler only, optional
- Half a ripe banana, for a toddler only, optional
Method
- Wash the mango, peel it and cut the flesh away from the stone. Discard any part near the skin that is firm or green.
- Blend the flesh until completely smooth.
- Press the puree through a fine sieve with the back of a spoon. This catches any stray fibre and is the step that matters most for a baby.
- Thin with water, expressed breast milk or formula, a tablespoon at a time, until it is as loose as your baby can manage on a spoon or in a cup.
- For a toddler, blend in the curd and banana if using, and thin with milk instead.
- Serve at once, cool rather than cold. Throw away any leftover from the bowl the baby ate from.
Texture by age and what to leave out
| Stage | Texture | Thin with | Leave out |
|---|---|---|---|
| First foods, after the paediatrician clears solids | Thin, smooth puree from a spoon | Water, expressed breast milk or formula | Sugar, honey, salt, nuts, spices, curd, cow's milk as a drink |
| Older infant, used to purees | Slightly thicker, still sieved | Water or formula | Sugar, honey, salt, nuts, spices |
| Toddler, over one year | Smoothie in a cup | Milk, with a spoon of curd or half a banana | Added sugar; nuts only as a fine powder, if your doctor agrees |
Older children can have the toddler version with a pinch of cardamom, a few chopped nuts or a spoon of saffron milk, the way a family mango shake is made. Keep the baby version plain. Our mango recipes for baby and how to cook mango for baby guides cover purees and cooked mango for the same age groups.
Nutrition, season and buying the fruit
100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of an adult Daily Value, along with some vitamin A as beta-carotene and natural sugars. Those are general figures for mango, not a claim about this recipe or about your baby. A smoothie is a food, not a treatment, and if your baby has reflux, loose stools or a known allergy, ask your doctor before offering fruit purees.
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh fruit sells from Rs 1,849 per dozen; check the product page for today's price. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, and one fruit makes two small baby servings, so a dozen goes a long way if you freeze sieved puree in an ice-cube tray. Our guide to freezing mango pulp for baby explains how.
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. Let the box ripen on the counter for two to three days until the fruit gives slightly near the stalk and smells sweet, then blend. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso; the pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) is the honest substitute.
People also ask
When can a baby have a mango smoothie?
Many paediatric guidelines suggest starting solids at around six months, one food at a time, but your paediatrician should decide for your baby. Start with a thin, sieved mango puree on a spoon, offer it alone for a few days, and move to a thicker smoothie only once your baby manages purees well.
Can I add milk or curd to a mango smoothie for a baby?
For a baby under one year, thin the puree with water, expressed breast milk or formula rather than giving cow's milk as a drink. Curd in small amounts is a question for your paediatrician. For a toddler over one year, milk and a spoon of plain curd make a thicker smoothie in a cup.
Should I add sugar or honey to a baby mango smoothie?
No. Ripe mango is sweet on its own, and a baby smoothie needs no sugar. Honey should not be given to a baby under one year. Keep the baby version plain: mango, a little liquid, and nothing else. Spices, nuts and sweeteners can wait until your doctor says the child is ready.
Which mango is best for a baby smoothie?
A ripe, non-fibrous mango that sieves to a smooth puree. Alphonso suits it because the pulp is rich, creamy and non-fibrous. Whatever variety you use, buy naturally ripened fruit, peel it, discard any firm green flesh and press the puree through a fine sieve before thinning it.
