What Ratnagiri Alphonso mango means for a Bangalore buyer

Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, and it is one of the two places most people mean when they say "Hapus". The other is Devgad, a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both grow the same variety, Alphonso, and Alphonso from this coast is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139). Bangalore has no Alphonso orchards of its own, so a Ratnagiri mango on your table has travelled from the Konkan.

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. We started selling offline in 2019 and online in 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. This page is for people in Bangalore who want to know what they are buying, what it costs and how the order works.

If you want the wider picture for the city, our guides to Alphonso mango in Bangalore and buying mangoes online in Bangalore cover local markets and other varieties. This article stays with Ratnagiri fruit.

How Ratnagiri Alphonso is picked and ripened

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so it is lifted off the tree rather than shaken down. Harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, for all our Alphonso. Wikipedia notes that Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening, which is why a box needs a few days at home before it is ready.

Ripening is a question every Bangalore buyer should ask any seller. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and our licence number is on our Brand Facts page.

Sizes, weights and price from Rs 1,849

Ratnagiri Alphonso is sold by the dozen on our Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango page. You choose the size of the fruit and the number of dozens. Prices start from Rs 1,849 per dozen for the smallest size and go up to Rs 5,399 for the largest Ratnagiri option. Check the product page for the price on the day you order, because prices can change.

How to read the Ratnagiri Alphonso options
What you choose What it changes
Fruit size Sizes run from about 150 g to about 300 g a fruit. Larger fruit costs more per dozen.
Number of dozens One dozen or two dozen on the Ratnagiri page.
Box weight A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
Price From Rs 1,849 per dozen; check the product page for today's price.

Because a dozen can weigh anywhere in that range, comparing a box to a market price quoted by weight needs care. Ask any seller for the count and the size of the fruit, then compare like with like. We do not quote a per-kilogram price.

Ratnagiri or Devgad: which one to order in Bangalore

Original Devgad Alphonso Mango export quality Devgad Hapus delivery Bangalore

Both are Alphonso. We do not rank one above the other, and we do not claim that one is sweeter or ripens earlier. The difference is the place on the coast where the orchard stands. Ratnagiri is a district headquartered at Ratnagiri town; Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district with its own Alphonso reputation.

Many Bangalore families simply order both in the same season and decide which they prefer. If you want to try the other origin, our Devgad Alphonso Mango page sells from the same starting price. Our guide to Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus explains the two places in more detail.

Alphonso is not the only mango Bangalore buyers ask about. Kesar from Gujarat is a different variety with orange pulp, and we sell it from Rs 999 per box on our Kesar Mango page. It is a separate fruit, not a cheaper grade of Alphonso.

Delivery to Bangalore and what to do when the box arrives

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a delivery day for any named city, so the PIN code check at checkout is the step that matters. Blue Dart is the carrier we use for fresh fruit.

When the box arrives, open it and check the fruit on the day it arrives. Fruit may arrive firm and soften over the following days. Keep it at room temperature, away from direct sun, and let the aroma and a slight give near the stalk tell you when it is ready. A refrigerator is for fruit that is already ripe and cut. If anything is damaged, report it to us within 24 hours of delivery.

  • Do not refrigerate unripe fruit.
  • Do not stack heavy items on the box.
  • Eat ripe fruit within a few days and keep cut pieces covered in the fridge.

Our shipping charges guide explains how shipping is shown at checkout.

Season dates and what you can order outside them

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold by us, and the fresh mango listings stay closed until the new crop. Alphonso pulp tins are available all year if you want the flavour for aamras, milkshakes or desserts.

Our Alphonso Mango Pulp tin comes in 850 g and 3.1 kg sizes from Rs 590. It is a good way to keep the Alphonso taste in the house between seasons, though it is not a replacement for a fresh dozen.

For gifts to Bangalore, tell us the quantity, the cities and the dates, and we will say what is possible. Our corporate gifting guide lists the questions to ask any supplier. We also supply restaurants and hotels, and you can write to us for that.

Five checks before you buy Ratnagiri Alphonso in Bangalore

  1. Ask where it grew. A seller should be able to say Ratnagiri or Devgad and name the belt.
  2. Ask how it was ripened. Carbide is prohibited; ask for a plain answer.
  3. Ask for the count and the size. A dozen is 12 fruits, and the weight depends on grade.
  4. Ask for papers. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), listed on our Brand Facts page.
  5. Ask what happens if the box is damaged. Ask before you pay.

A bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof, and no home test shows how a mango was ripened. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions in more detail.
