Mango health benefits for baby come down to plain facts: ripe mango gives vitamin C, some beta-carotene, a little fibre and natural sugar, in a soft pulp most babies accept. It is a food, not a medicine. Ask your paediatrician before introducing it.
What mango gives a baby

We are Powle Home Foods, the family behind AlphonsoMango.in. We sell mangoes, and we would rather tell you what the fruit contains than promise what it will do. The figures below are general values for raw mango, not for Alphonso in particular and not for any one baby.
- Vitamin C. 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of an adult Daily Value. A baby's portion is much smaller than 100 g.
- Vitamin A. Mango carries beta-carotene, which the body can convert to vitamin A. The orange colour of the pulp is the visible sign of it.
- Fibre. A little dietary fibre, as in most fruit.
- Natural sugar. Ripe mango is sweet on its own, which is why a baby puree needs nothing added.
- Water. Most of a ripe mango is water, so a puree is also a soft, moist food for a baby learning to swallow.
Nothing in that list is unique to mango. What makes the fruit useful at weaning is the combination: soft, sweet, moist, and easy to make smooth. If your baby has reflux, loose stools, eczema or a known food allergy, ask your doctor before offering it.
When and how to introduce mango
Many paediatric guidelines suggest starting solids at around six months, one new food at a time, with a few days between new foods so any reaction is easy to trace. Mango is not usually listed among the common allergens, but any food can cause a reaction in some babies, and the skin near the stalk can irritate the mouth of a sensitive child. Peel the fruit well and discard flesh close to the skin.
- Start with a teaspoon of thin, sieved puree, offered on its own, once a day.
- Watch for a rash, vomiting, loose stools or fussiness over the next two to three days.
- If all is well, increase slowly and move from thin puree to a thicker one as your baby manages texture.
- Serve fresh. Throw away whatever is left in the bowl the baby ate from.
Do not add sugar, honey, salt, nuts or spices to a baby's mango. Honey in particular should not be given to a baby under one year. Our mango smoothie for baby and how to cook mango for baby guides give the step-by-step.
Which mango to choose for a baby
Texture decides it. Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous, so it blends to a smooth puree with little left in the sieve. Fibrous varieties leave strands a baby cannot handle. Whatever variety you choose, the fruit should be fully ripe: it gives slightly near the stalk and smells sweet.
How the fruit was ripened matters more for a baby than for anyone else at the table. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide (acetylene) gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. No home test proves how a mango was ripened, so ask any seller directly. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions to ask.
Fresh Alphonso comes from our Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso pages in season; both are the same variety from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and we do not rank one above the other. Between seasons, a tin of Alphonso mango pulp can be used; check the label for added sugar and ask your paediatrician whether a sweetened pulp suits your baby.
Claims you will read elsewhere, and what we can say
Search results for this topic are full of promises: mango "boosts immunity", "builds the brain", "makes skin glow", "cures constipation". We do not make those claims, and we would ask any seller who does to show the evidence. The table separates what is documented about mango as a food from what is a claim about a baby's health.
| Topic | Documented about the fruit | Health claim to treat with caution |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin C | About 36 mg per 100 g of raw mango | "Prevents colds" or "boosts immunity" |
| Vitamin A | Beta-carotene is present in the pulp | "Improves eyesight" or "makes hair grow" |
| Fibre | A little dietary fibre, as in most fruit | "Cures constipation" or "stops diarrhoea" |
| Sugar | Ripe mango is naturally sweet | "Energy for the brain" or "weight gain food" |
| Texture | Alphonso pulp is non-fibrous | "Safe for every baby" |
A mango puree is a good first fruit for many babies. That is as far as we go. Your paediatrician knows your child; we know the fruit.
Season, portions and buying the fruit
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh fruit sells from Rs 1,849 per dozen; check the product page for today's price. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, and one fruit gives several baby portions, so most of a dozen will be eaten by the rest of the family or frozen as sieved puree in an ice-cube tray. Our guide to freezing mango pulp for baby explains how.
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. The box arrives firm and ripens on the counter over two to three days; blend when the fruit gives slightly near the stalk. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139); for Alphonso we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), listed on our Brand Facts page.
