Mango for infants is usually introduced from about six months, when a baby is ready for solid food. Offer ripe, soft Alphonso pulp as a smooth puree or mash, add one new food at a time, and check with your paediatrician first.
When can babies start mango?
The World Health Organization advises exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, with complementary foods starting after that. Mango fits that stage well. It is soft, naturally sweet and easy to mash, so many families use it as one of the first fruits after banana and apple.
Introduce one new food at a time and wait a few days before adding the next. That way, if your baby reacts, you know which food caused it. Offer mango at the start of the day rather than at night, so you can watch for any rash or stomach upset while your baby is awake and you can reach your doctor.
Every baby is different. If your family has a history of food allergies, or your baby has eczema or was born early, ask your paediatrician before trying mango. This page is general food information, not medical advice.
Why Alphonso pulp suits first tastes
Alphonso flesh is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous, which matters for a baby. There are no stringy fibres to sieve out, so a ripe fruit mashes or blends into a smooth puree without water, milk or sugar. Fibrous mango types usually need more straining.
We source Alphonso from 48 villages across the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. The fruit is harvested pre-dawn at Brahma Muhurta and ripened on hay beds. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. For a baby, you want to know exactly how the fruit was ripened, and you can ask any seller the same question.
Our fruit carries the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), which you can read about on our Brand Facts page. Over 47,000 customers, including offline and marketplace, have bought from us since our first sales in 2019.
What mango offers per 100 g
These figures are for raw mango in general, not Alphonso alone, and they come from the Wikipedia mango entry. Real values vary with ripeness and size.
| Nutrient | About | Share of Daily Value |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin C | 36 mg | roughly 40% |
| Folate | 43 micrograms | around 11% |
| Potassium | 168 mg | 6% |
The Daily Value is set for adults, so it is only a guide to how rich a food is. A baby eats a spoonful or two, not 100 g. Mango is a natural source of sugar too. If your baby gets loose stools after a new fruit, go slowly and speak to your doctor. Our articles on mango and constipation in babies and mango and gas in babies cover those questions.
How to serve mango by age
Wash the fruit, peel it, and remove the stone. Use only the soft flesh and none of the skin, because the skin and sap can irritate sensitive mouths and skin. Serve at room temperature or slightly cool. Do not microwave puree, because hot spots can burn a baby's mouth.
| Stage | Texture | How to offer it |
|---|---|---|
| About 6 to 7 months | Smooth puree | Blend or mash ripe flesh until no lumps remain, and offer a spoonful. |
| About 8 to 10 months | Thicker mash | Mash with banana or soft rice porridge and leave small soft lumps. |
| About 10 to 12 months | Soft pieces | Offer ripe, soft, bite-sized pieces for self-feeding while you sit with your baby. |
For baby-led weaning, some parents offer a thick ripe slice. Others find it slippery and prefer a mashed spoon or a roll in finely ground oats. Whichever you choose, stay with your baby at every meal. Choking can happen quickly and quietly, and your paediatrician can show you the right shape and size for your baby's age.
Some parents offer chilled mango when a baby is teething. Cold food is not suitable for every baby, and pieces that break off can choke a baby. Ask your paediatrician before offering it. Our guide to cooking mango for a baby shows a gentler steamed option.
Three simple mango recipes for babies
None of these needs sugar, salt or honey. Check each food is suitable for your baby's age before you combine them.
- Plain mango puree: peel one ripe fruit, remove the stone, and blend the soft flesh until smooth. Keep the rest covered in the fridge and use it within a day.
- Mango and banana mash: mash half a ripe banana and stir in a spoonful of mango puree. The banana makes it thicker and creamier.
- Mango and rice porridge: cook rice in water until very soft, let it cool, then stir in mango puree. This works for older babies who are already eating rice.

Allergy, rash and choking safety
Mango allergy is uncommon, but it exists. The skin and sap of the mango tree contain urushiol-like compounds, related to the ones in poison ivy, and some people react to them. Peeling the fruit and feeding only the flesh lowers the chance of contact reactions around the mouth.
Watch for these signs after a first taste of mango:
- A rash or redness around the mouth, chin or cheeks.
- Hives on the body, or swollen lips or tongue.
- Vomiting or sudden loose stools.
- Any trouble breathing, which needs emergency care straight away.
If your baby shows mild redness, stop the feed, wipe the mouth clean and call your doctor for advice. If there is swelling or trouble breathing, get emergency help. Note what you fed and when, and share it with the doctor. For more, read our article on whether mango can cause allergy in babies.
Choosing and storing mango for a baby
Choose fruit that is fully ripe. The skin yields to gentle pressure, and a sweet smell is strongest near the stalk. Avoid fruit with dark sunken patches or a fermented smell. These are rough clues, not proof, so if you are unsure, wait a day. Ask any seller how the fruit was ripened. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions to ask.
Keep unripe mango at room temperature away from direct sun until it softens, then move ripe fruit to the fridge. Keep cut fruit and puree in a covered container in the fridge, and use them within a day. Spoon the puree into small portions if you want to freeze it. Throw away any leftovers from the feeding bowl, because saliva spoils them.
Fresh Alphonso, pulp tins and season
Fresh Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso, so do not trust anyone offering it in the off months. Our Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin is available all year in 850 g and 3.1 kg sizes, from Rs 590. Read the tin label and check with your paediatrician before you use any pulp for a baby.
In season, you can order Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango or browse the full mango collection. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, with prices from Rs 1,849. Check the product page for the latest price.
People also ask
Can a 6 month old baby eat mango?
Yes, most babies can try mango from about six months, once they are ready for solid food. Offer a smooth puree of ripe, soft flesh, introduce it on its own, and wait a few days before adding another new food. Check with your paediatrician first, especially if allergies run in your family.
Is mango good for infants?
Mango is a soft, naturally sweet fruit that provides vitamin C, folate and potassium, and it mashes easily for a baby just starting solids. It is not a cure or a replacement for breast milk or formula. Start with a small taste, and ask your doctor if your baby has allergies.
Can babies have dried mango?
Dried mango is chewy, sticky and often sweetened, so it is a choking risk for young babies and is not usually recommended early on. Offering soft, fully ripe fruit as a puree or mash is a safer way to start. Ask your paediatrician when chewy foods are suitable for your child.
How do you give mango to a 7 month old baby?
Peel a ripe mango, remove the stone, and blend or mash the soft flesh into a smooth puree. Offer a spoonful at room temperature, and mix it with mashed banana or soft rice once your baby accepts it. Watch for rash or stomach upset, and stay with your baby during the meal.
