Organic Mango: The Alphonso Delight

Organic Mango: The Alphonso Delight - AlphonsoMango.in

Organic mango means fruit grown under a certified organic farming system. That is a separate question from how a mango is ripened or where it grows. We do not claim organic certification for our Alphonso, so ask any seller who uses the word to show the certificate.

People search for organic mango for good reasons. They want fewer chemicals in the fruit they feed their family, and they want to know who stands behind the label. This page explains the word, separates it from two other terms that sellers often mix up, and says plainly where our own Alphonso stands.

What organic mango means

"Organic" describes how the tree was grown: the soil, the inputs and the farm records. It does not describe how the fruit was ripened after harvest, and it does not describe where the fruit comes from. In India, organic food is expected to be backed by certification under a recognised organic programme, and food labelling rules cover the use of the word. Rules change, so check current rules with the certifying body or the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India before you rely on a label.

Two practical points follow. First, a farm can grow carefully without being certified, but without a certificate the word "organic" is only a claim. Second, a certificate belongs to a particular farm or group and a particular period, so a good seller can tell you who holds it and what it covers.

One more background fact helps. Named varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting, because mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic. A grafted Alphonso tree is a managed orchard tree, not a wild one, and orchards differ in how they are run. That is why one orchard's practice tells you nothing about another's.

Organic, naturally ripened and GI: three different things

Sellers often use these words as if they were interchangeable. They answer three separate questions.

Three labels, three different questions
Label Question it answers What to ask for
Organic How was the tree grown? The certificate, the certifying body and what it covers
Naturally ripened How was the fruit ripened after harvest? The seller's ripening method, stated plainly
GI-tagged Alphonso Where does the fruit come from? The GI authorisation number of the seller

A fruit can be certified organic and still be ripened with a method you would not choose. A fruit can be naturally ripened and not be organic. A GI credential tells you about origin, not about farming practice. Read each label for what it actually says.

Where our Alphonso stands

We sell Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso. The fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. We do not claim organic certification for our fruit on this page, and we would rather say so than let a search term do the claiming for us.

What we can state is this. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139) for Alphonso, which you can read about on our Brand Facts page. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, and all our Alphonso is harvested at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour.

If certified organic fruit is a firm requirement for you, ask the seller for the certificate before you order, from us or anyone else. If your priority is a clear ripening method and a named origin, our Alphonso fits that.

Questions to ask any seller

  • Is the fruit certified organic? If yes, ask for the certificate number, the certifying body and the farm or group it covers.
  • How was it ripened? The answer should be a method, not a slogan.
  • Where was it grown? A named district or village is better than "Konkan fruit".
  • Is the seller licensed? Look for an FSSAI licence number.
  • What does the price include? Is it per dozen, per box or per kilo, and what does that unit weigh?

Be wary of any page that says "100% organic" or "chemical-free" with nothing to back it. A claim without a certificate or a test report is a claim only. The same rule applies to our own pages: we try to state only what we can show.

Natural ripening on hay beds

Ripening is the part of the story where buyers have most to gain from asking. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. Natural ripening on hay beds uses neither: mature fruit is laid on hay and ripens by itself over several days.

Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to full ripeness. At home, keep the fruit at room temperature, away from direct sun, and out of the fridge until it is ripe. A ripe Alphonso smells sweet near the stalk and gives slightly under a gentle press. Our guide to ripening Alphonso at home has the detail, and our guide to artificial ripening explains what to avoid.

On colour, no home test settles it. The water or bucket test is a rough clue, not proof. Read how to identify carbide-ripened mangoes for the clues and their limits.

Buying Alphonso with a clear label

Alphonso is harvested from about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and we do not sell fresh Alphonso outside the season. The Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin is available all year in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590.

Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad starts from Rs 1,849 per dozen, and the largest Ratnagiri option goes up to Rs 5,399. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on the grade. Check the product page for today's price. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery, so check your PIN code at checkout. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery.

For vitamin C context, raw mango in general provides about 36 mg per 100 g, roughly 40% of the Daily Value. That is a general mango figure, not an organic or Alphonso claim.

People also ask

What is organic mango?

Organic mango is fruit from trees grown under a certified organic farming system, with records for the soil, inputs and farm practice. The word describes how the tree was grown, not how the fruit was ripened or where it comes from. Ask the seller for the certificate, the certifying body and what it covers.

Is Alphonso mango organic?

Not automatically. Alphonso is a variety, and organic is a farming certification. A given Alphonso is organic only if the farm holds a valid organic certificate. We do not claim organic certification for our fruit, so ask any seller who does for the certificate details.

How can I check if a mango is organic?

Ask for the organic certificate number, the certifying body and the farm or group it covers, then check that it matches the seller. Appearance cannot confirm it, and a bucket test is a rough clue, not proof. A claim with no certificate behind it is only a claim.

Are naturally ripened mangoes the same as organic mangoes?

No. Natural ripening describes what happens after harvest, such as ripening on hay beds without carbide. Organic describes how the tree was grown. A mango can be one without the other, so ask sellers about both separately and read each label for what it says.
