Alphonso mango in Tamil: the names

Alphonso compared with mangoes Tamil Nadu knows
Tamil Nadu has its own well-loved mangoes, and Alphonso does not stand in for them. It is a different fruit with a different coast behind it. These are the names that come up most often in questions we receive:
- Banganapalli (பங்கனப்பள்ளி): a large mango associated with Andhra Pradesh and widely sold in Tamil Nadu. It is not Alphonso.
- Malgova (மல்கோவா): a mango from Tamil Nadu. We list Malgova on its own product page; check it for the current price.
- Imam Pasand (இமாம் பசந்த்) and Mallika (மல்லிகா): other varieties that Tamil buyers search for. We do not list them.
- Kesar: a Gujarat mango with orange pulp. We sell Kesar at Rs 999 for a half-dozen and Rs 1,699 for a dozen, and make no GI claim for it.

Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, with saffron-orange, non-fibrous flesh and a strong scent. Because Indian-group mangoes are monoembryonic, a named variety such as Alphonso is propagated by grafting rather than from seed. Our what is Alphonso mango page explains the variety further.
Buying Alphonso mango online in Tamil Nadu
We source across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. Alphonso from this belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district; both are the same variety under the same GI, and we do not rank one above the other.
- Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and Devgad Alphonso Mango: both from Rs 1,849 per dozen. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
- Pairi mango: from Rs 2,799 per dozen.
- Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590), available all year.

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May, and the 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. That window overlaps Puthandu, the Tamil new year in mid-April, when mango pachadi is made with raw mango. Ripe Alphonso is a fruit to eat as it is. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season.
Ripening and handling the box in Tamil Nadu heat
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net.

Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, so some fruit can arrive firm. In a warm climate like Tamil Nadu, it ripens fast once the box is open:
- Lay the mangoes in a single layer in the coolest room, away from sun.
- Check daily. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
- Do not refrigerate firm fruit; cold stops ripening. Chill ripe fruit briefly, and eat it within a day.
- If the whole box ripens together, blend the extra into aamras and freeze small portions.
Any damage should be reported within 24 hours of delivery to support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029. See also our guide to ripening Alphonso at home.
Nutrition and aamras
For raw mango in general, 100 g provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, about 43 micrograms of folate and about 168 mg of potassium. These are generic mango figures, not Alphonso-specific; we have no variety-level lab data. Mango also contains natural sugars, so people managing blood sugar should ask their doctor about portions. We sell fruit, not medical advice.
The easiest use of ripe Alphonso is aamras: scoop the pulp, blend it with a little milk or nothing at all, and chill. Our aamras recipe has quantities, and the mango nutrition facts page lists the full table.
Choosing a size before you order
The product pages offer the fruit in weight grades, and the price rises with the size. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Smaller fruit is perfectly good for aamras, milkshakes and everyday eating, and the larger grades suit gifts and cutting at the table. If you are ordering for the first time, one dozen is the sensible start; you will know after one box whether you want more.
Nothing on the site changes the taste by place name alone. Ratnagiri and Devgad are the same variety, so pick whichever page has the grade you want. Ask us before you order if you need a date for a family occasion, by writing to support@alphonsomango.in or calling 8369048029.
