Both varieties are identical in ripening method, packaging standard and courier handling. The taste difference is real but subtle. Devgad fruit, sea-facing in Sindhudurg, tends to hit the upper Brix range. Ratnagiri fruit from villages like Pawas, Golap and Nachane has a slightly firmer flesh that some people prefer for aamras. Try both across a season and you will have an opinion.
Delivery Across India
After harvest, fruit moves from the orchard to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse in about two hours. Air-conditioned transport then carries it 10–12 hours to our Mumbai packhouse, where it rests on a hay bed for 24–48 hours of natural ripening. Total time from tree to dispatch: 48–72 hours.
Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier box, 130 gsm paper, with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm by fruit size) on a hay bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going during the final ripening stage after delivery. The foam net is there for a specific reason: Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed against another surface. Without it, a two-day road journey creates friction scars on every fruit.
If fruit arrives transit-damaged or fails on quality, report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We either dispatch a fresh replacement or credit the amount to your account for the next purchase. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Where the Fruit Comes From
We source from 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Devgad taluka alone, we work with farmers in Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon (Devgad), Tambaldeg, Ilve, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde and Mandivali. Ratnagiri taluka villages include Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Shirgaon (Ratnagiri), Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi.
Our 100+ partner farming families manage orchards that are typically 12–25 years old. Tree age matters because older Alphonso trees in alternating-bearing management produce fruit with more concentrated sugar and a thinner fibre ratio. Prashant Powle selects orchards on three criteria: Brix consistency across the season, tree longevity and how well farmers manage the alternate-bearing cycle.
Harvest is done by hand using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. For tall trees we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. Fruit that falls to the ground is not graded for home delivery.
What Does GI Tag No. 139 Mean for You?
GI No. 139 covers Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It is a geographic origin protection — the fruit must come from these specific districts to be called Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso. Our GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 was issued on 16 October 2019 (Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260). A lot of "Alphonso" sold online is actually Kesar or Totapuri labelled as Hapus. The GI number is the only check that holds legally.
How We Ripen the Fruit
Every box you receive has been ripened on hay — what growers in Konkan call Aadi ripening. Fruit arrives at our Mumbai packhouse firm, rests on a hay bed in temperature-controlled rooms for 24–48 hours, and is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness. It finishes ripening over three days in your kitchen. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.
This is not marketing language. Calcium carbide is banned under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations. Beyond legality, carbide-ripened fruit ripens from outside in, leaving the area near the seed unripe and often bitter. Hay-ripened Alphonso ripens evenly. You notice it in the pulp colour — uniform deep saffron, not pale near the seed.
We also carry out post-harvest hot-water treatment after harvest to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life. Fruit then cools at the packhouse before transport. This two-step — hot water, then cooling — is standard food-science practice for tropical stone fruit. We added it because transit to north India takes 2–3 days and we needed a buffer.
Is the Fruit Pesticide-Free?
Not the right word to use. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit in April 2025 under report 01/ETHAP2500044 issued 5 April 2025. All 28 pesticide residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of the 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. That is accurate. "Pesticide-free" is not.
How to Verify Authenticity
Three checks any buyer can run. First, ask for the GI Authorised User number — ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260. Second, check the FSSAI licence — ours is 10020022011783 under Powle Home Foods. Third, look at the box label for APEDA registration 225579, which is required for export-standard packing. If a seller cannot produce all three, the origin claim is unverified.
Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. That is a district-product recognition, not an award to any individual seller. We mention it because it confirms the institutional standing of the origin, not to claim the medal ourselves.
Storage After Delivery
Leave firm fruit at room temperature for two to three days. Once the shoulder of the mango yields to gentle pressure and the skin colour shifts to a deeper yellow with saffron tones near the tip, the fruit is ready. Do not refrigerate until fully ripe — cold storage on an unripe Alphonso chills the cell walls before the sugars have developed, and you end up with a bland, slightly fibrous result.
Once ripe, refrigerate and consume within two days. The season runs February to June with peak availability in March, April and May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso after June. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
Nutrition in One 100 g Serving
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. That meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Govindappa et al., 2011 documented anti-inflammatory activity in mangiferin — a compound present in mango pulp and skin — in a cell study. We cite that carefully: a cell study is not a clinical trial. The vitamin C figures are the safer claim.

About Powle Home Foods
AlphonsoMango.in is operated by Powle Home Foods, founded in 2017 by Prashant Powle. The operating entity was registered in July 2019 and the first full commercial season ran in 2020. Since then, 47,000+ customers have ordered from us. 46% of them reorder. The average customer places 2.8 orders per season. 18% of orders are gifts.
Every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine vision that checks for internal conditions (including spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. This grading step replaced our earlier hand-sorting table in 2023. The grading table felt thorough; the machine found errors we were missing.
