Both varieties carry GI No. 139. Both are ripened on hay without carbide or ethylene chambers. The difference is in origin and Brix: Devgad fruit, sourced from villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar on the Sindhudurg coast, typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° range. Ratnagiri fruit — from Pawas, Golap, Nachane and nearby orchards — is the variety most of north India recognises as the definitive Hapus.

Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows a clear pattern: buyers in Delhi, Lucknow and Chandigarh reach for Ratnagiri; those in Pune and Mumbai tend to reorder Devgad. Neither is better in an absolute sense — they are different expressions of the same GI-protected fruit.

Delivery Across India

Every box leaves our Mumbai packhouse by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, depending on your pin code. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Transit takes 20–24 hours to metro cities and 1–3 days to most other locations.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ready to eat within about three days of delivery. The 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box carries transit pressure through reinforced corners and a 12-slot partition, so the fruit travels in foam-net sleeves on a hay bed rather than stacked against each other. Six air holes in the box keep airflow going so the hay-bed ripening continues naturally in transit.

If fruit arrives damaged, send a photo within 24 hours of delivery. We replace the affected fruit. No argument, no waiting.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso mangoes from July to January. The season ends in June and we will not sell off-season fruit that has been cold-stored for months. That is an honest limit of what we do.

Where Our Alphonso Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle sources fruit from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — from Pawas and Golap in Ratnagiri taluka to Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg on the Sindhudurg coast, and as far south as Achara and Tondavali in Malvan and Vengurla talukas. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. Over 100 partner farmer families supply to our Malvan packing centre and Devgad packing point.

Harvest is done by hand with a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used so the harvester can see exactly where to cut. This matters because bruising at harvest shows up as a blackened lenticel three days later — by which point the box is already at your door.

From harvest to your hands takes 48–72 hours end to end: roughly two hours from tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling and a hot-water treatment there, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening at the Mumbai packhouse, and then dispatch.

AI-Assisted Grading Before Packing

Every fruit is weighed and graded. Then AI and ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues (spongy tissue) and external deformities before it goes into a foam-net sleeve. We assumed early on that visual grading by experienced hands was sufficient — the scanning data showed we were missing a meaningful fraction of spongy tissue cases that look perfectly fine from outside. The machine goes now.

How We Ripen the Alphonso Mangoes

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay — not gas-triggered.

Calcium carbide ripening produces a fruit that looks ripe on day one and tastes hollow on day two. Hay-bed ripening is slower and the result is different in the mouth: the 18–24° Brix builds evenly through the pulp rather than concentrating near the skin. Envirocare Labs (NABL accredited, Thane, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit on 5 April 2025 — all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits, 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. We do not claim "pesticide-free" because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits. We cite the number honestly.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply from March to May. Outside those months, we do not sell fresh Alphonso mangoes. If you are reading this in August or December, the next season is several months away — add yourself to the waitlist on the product page and we will email you when fruit is ready.

Season length varies with rainfall and temperature in the Konkan. Prashant Powle was quoted in the Economic Times in June 2026 on how weather and yield pressures are affecting GI-certified growers (read the article). The short version: a bad flowering season can cut volume by 30–40%, which means buying early in the season is safer than waiting for price drops in May.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso at full ripeness measures 18–24° Brix, typically at the upper end of that range. Ratnagiri Alphonso sits in the same band. Brix alone does not determine flavour — the acid-to-sugar ratio and fibre content matter too, and both varieties are low-fibre with a long finish.

When is the best time to order Alphonso mangoes?

Order between mid-March and late April for peak-season fruit. Early-season boxes (February–early March) can be slightly firmer. Late-season boxes (May–June) are sweeter but supply is tighter and prices firm up as orchards near their end.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a compound present in Alphonso pulp and peel, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011) — though that is a cell study, not a clinical trial, and we mention it as context rather than a health claim.

Alphonso puree is also suitable as a weaning food from around six months as a serving suggestion — check with your paediatrician for your child's specific situation.

People Also Ask

Is Alphonso mango available in the USA?

Yes. GI-certified Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Devgad are exported to the US every season, February to June. Powle Home Foods (AlphonsoMango.in) ships to international customers during the peak season. Outside India, order windows align with the March–May harvest peak, and availability closes when the Indian season ends in June.

If you are ordering from within India, BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees deliver to 15,000–17,000 pin codes within 1–3 days.

Is Alphonso the best mango in the world?

Alphonso — called Hapus in Maharashtra — consistently earns that reputation. Its 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, saffron-coloured fibre-free pulp, and distinct floral aroma set it apart from other varieties. GI Tag No. 139 protects the name for fruit grown specifically in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra's Konkan coast.

Taste is personal, but Alphonso has won export markets in the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan on its own merits, without any marketing subsidy.

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

GI-certified Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes are priced at ₹1,849 for a half dozen up to ₹5,399 for two dozen on AlphonsoMango.in, with Devgad Alphonso ranging ₹1,849–₹5,499. Per-kilogram cost depends on the weight grade — Small (150–180 g) to Jumbo (275–300 g) — and the box size you choose.

Prices reflect GI-certified origin, AI-assisted grading, hay-bed ripening and courier delivery — not commodity market rates.

Are Alphonso and mango the same?

Alphonso is one variety of mango — Mangifera indica — prized specifically from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra's Konkan coast. There are hundreds of mango varieties across India; Alphonso is simply one of them, protected under GI Tag No. 139. Outside that GI region, the same fruit cannot legally carry the Alphonso or Hapus name.
