We ship to 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Both varieties reach you at 70–80% ripeness and finish ripening at home within about three days — that is intentional, not a packaging shortcut. Dispatching fully ripe fruit across India would mean bruised, leaking boxes on arrival.

Both Alphonso varieties carry the same GI number (139). The real difference is flavour profile — Devgad fruit tends to sit at the upper end of that 18–24° Brix range and has a slightly richer, more aromatic skin character. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India disproportionately chooses Ratnagiri; Mumbai buyers prefer Devgad. We have no tidy explanation for this other than familiarity — buyers know what their family has always eaten.

What do the weight grades mean for your mango purchase?

Every fruit we dispatch is weighed at the packhouse. Small grade runs 150–180 g, Medium 180–225 g, Extra Large 250–275 g and Jumbo 275–300 g. A dozen Jumbo Devgad mangoes in a single box is the most popular corporate gift we send — typically 1–2 dozen boxes per corporate order, scaled up to multi-destination dispatch for large events. The weight grade also determines how many fit cleanly into the 12-slot partition without touching.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves our Malvan packing centre or the Devgad packing point, travels in air-conditioned vehicles to the Mumbai packhouse, spends 24–48 hours on a natural hay bed there, then goes out with BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Total harvest-to-dispatch time: 48–72 hours. Metro cities typically receive the box within 20–24 hours of dispatch. Other locations get it in 1–3 days.

The box itself does real work: 5-ply corrugated fibreboard at 130 gsm, a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure instead of the fruit, six air holes for airflow, hay cushioning and a foam-net sleeve around every mango. The foam net (flat width 50–55 mm) prevents the one thing that ruins Alphonso at retail — the lenticels blackening from skin friction. A bruised lenticel is not a safety issue, but it is the first thing a customer photographs. We would rather it never happen.

If fruit arrives damaged or quality-failed, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account. No physical return is needed.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle started sourcing from a handful of orchards in 2017. By the 2024 season we were working with 100+ partner farmer families across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg — places like Pawas, Golap and Nachane in Ratnagiri taluka; Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg in Devgad taluka; and Achara, Tondavali and Kochare along the Malvan and Vengurla coastline. The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected for Brix consistency and sound alternate-bearing management.

Every farmer partner follows cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering through to harvest. Fruit is hand-picked using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net — the tree is never shaken and the fruit never falls. For tall trees we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. That detail matters: a dropped Alphonso bruises at the shoulder within hours, and spongy tissue risk rises with any impact at harvest.

What does GI Authorised User mean for your mango purchase?

The GI Registry issued Certificate No. 4163 on 16 October 2019, covering GI No. 139 for Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260. That number is publicly verifiable at the GI Registry. It means the fruit we sell under the Alphonso name must, by law, originate from those districts — not a cold store in Vashi, not an orchard in another state.

We also hold FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579, which covers our export shipments to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. At the Mumbai packhouse the mangoes rest on hay for 24–48 hours in a temperature-controlled room. That time is monitored ripening, not gas-triggered acceleration. After harvest there is also a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life.

We do not use carbide. One question we get constantly is whether this is provable. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. in Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284 — tested our fruit weekly through the 2025 season. Report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025, checked 28 residue parameters. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free — that would be inaccurate. The carbide question is separate: this panel does not test for calcium carbide, but calcium carbide is an artificial ripening agent and we use none.

Mango Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply in March, April and May. We dispatch no fresh Alphonso between July and January. If you are reading this outside that window, the product pages will show out of stock — that is not a website error. It is the honest state of the fruit. Pre-orders open before the season and you can cancel before dispatch.

The 2026 season was difficult. Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on how weather stress and yield compression created what the headline called an "existential crisis" for Alphonso growers (read the piece here). Supply fluctuates year to year — we would rather tell you that plainly than promise fruit we cannot deliver.

Nutrition in a Ripe Alphonso

A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C. That meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The fruit also contains mangiferin, a polyphenol with anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). Cell studies are not clinical trials — we mention this because it is real, published work, not because it proves any health claim for the fruit you eat.

Alphonso puree is suitable as a complementary food for babies from about 6 months — keep it as a serving suggestion, not medical advice, and check with your paediatrician if you are unsure.

Our 46% repeat-customer rate and 2.8 boxes per customer per season are not nutrition metrics — they are a proxy for the fruit tasting as it should. Nutrition labels tell one story; the fact that 47,000+ customers have ordered since 2020 and nearly half come back tells another.

People Also Ask

Where is the best place to buy mangoes?

Buy from a GI Authorised User if you want certified Alphonso — not a local market vendor who cannot prove origin. AlphonsoMango.in (Powle Home Foods, AU/5974/GI/139/260) sources from 55 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, ships hay-bed ripened fruit pan-India in 1–3 days, and has served 47,000+ customers since 2020.

For Kesar, look for sourcing from Junagadh and Gir — GI Tag No. 185 covers that region specifically.

How do you buy a mango?

Online, pick your variety — Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499) or Kesar (₹999–₹1,699) — then choose grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo (275–300 g). Select half dozen, one dozen or two dozen, pay by UPI or card, and fruit reaches most Indian cities in 1–3 days, dispatched at 70–80% ripeness so it finishes at home.

At a physical market, press the stem end gently — a ripe Alphonso yields slightly — and check that the skin colour runs golden-yellow with no grey patches near the lenticels.
