Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?

Both carry the same GI No. 139. The differences are real but subtle — enough that 46% of customers who try one variety reorder and often switch between the two across the season.

Jumbo fruits weigh 275–300 g each. Extra Large is 250–275 g, Medium 180–225 g, and Small 150–180 g. For gifting, Extra Large or Jumbo is the usual choice — the visual difference in the box is striking.

Delivery Across India

Alphonso mango order online — packed and ready for dispatch across India

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. Air-conditioned vehicles carry it to the Mumbai packhouse — a 10–12 hour run. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening in temperature-controlled rooms, it is packed and dispatched by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, depending on your pin code.

Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune) typically receive their order in 20–24 hours. Everywhere else: 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) courier-grade carton with reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not have to, and six air holes for airflow. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. The sleeves prevent the one thing that ruins Alphonso skin in transit: friction. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed — even lightly — so the foam net does real work here, not decorative work.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for the courier network. It ripens fully within about three days of delivery at room temperature.

Honest limitation: Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. The tree has a sharp seasonal cycle and we do not sell cold-stored or blended fruit out of season. If you are reading this outside February–June, you can pre-order for the next season.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade and variety. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) on the product page. Pick Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo based on fruit size preference, or leave it to the seasonal grade we dispatch.
  2. Add to cart and check out. Box options are half dozen, one dozen or two dozen. Enter your pin code at checkout — the system confirms serviceability and assigns the right courier automatically.
  3. We dispatch and track for you. BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees (by pin code) picks up the box. You get a tracking number by SMS or email. Most metro orders arrive in 20–24 hours; other cities in 1–3 days.

If fruit arrives transit-damaged or quality-failed, photograph or video it and send to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

Origin and GI Tag

Alphonso mango holds Geographical Indication No. 139, covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of the Konkan coast. Powle Home Foods is a GI Authorised User — certificate number AU/5974/GI/139/260, GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019. Devgad Alphonso carries AU/6932 under the same GI number.

The Konkan geography does the heavy lifting: laterite soil, high humidity, sea-facing slopes, and the specific microclimate of villages like Pawas and Nachane in Ratnagiri or Dahibav and Vijaydurg in Devgad taluka. Prashant Powle spent years selecting orchards specifically for Brix consistency and tree age. Most trees in the network are 12–25 years old — young enough to bear reliably, old enough to have established root depth that drives flavour concentration.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product recognition, not a brand award, but it confirms what growers in Pawas have known for decades.

What makes Alphonso different from other mango varieties?

Brix of 18–24° at full ripeness is measurably higher than most commercial mango varieties. The fibre content is low, the pulp-to-seed ratio is high, and the terpene profile gives it the distinct saffron-tinged aroma that no other variety replicates. We assumed the aroma was purely subjective — a Brix meter and pulp-weight comparison across five varieties in our 2024 season grading proved it is structural.

Ripening, Harvesting and Quality

Alphonso mangoes ripening on hay bed — natural Aadi ripening, no carbide, no ethylene

Harvesting uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, Prashant Powle's team uses an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera — the picker sees what they are cutting before the cut is made. This matters because stem punctures from a dropped fruit cause latex burns that spread to neighbouring mangoes in the box.

After harvest, every fruit goes through controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then post-harvest cooling at the packhouse. The Mumbai ripening room uses the traditional Aadi (hay-bed) method: hay absorbs moisture, regulates micro-temperature around each fruit, and lets ethylene — produced by the fruit itself — trigger even ripening. No gas is introduced. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. The 24–48 hours there is monitored ripening, not chemical acceleration.

Before packing, every mango passes AI/ML-assisted machine scanning. The scanner checks for spongy tissue internally and external deformities. Fruit that fails does not ship — that is the short version of our grading protocol.

Is Alphonso mango carbide-free?

Yes. Natural hay-bed ripening only. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284) tests residues weekly through the season. Report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025: all 28 tested residues were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free, because one residue was detected (within limits).

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a bioactive compound in Alphonso, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al., 2011 — worth knowing, though a cell study is not a clinical trial.

Alphonso puree works well for babies from around six months as a weaning food — keep that as a serving idea, not medical advice. Check with your paediatrician first.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak quality and volume in March to May. Outside this window — July through January — we sell no fresh Alphonso. Not slow-season stock, not cold-store fruit, nothing. The orchards in Devgad and Ratnagiri are simply not producing fruit worth eating in those months, and we do not pretend otherwise.

Pre-orders open before the season starts. Ordering early locks in your grade preference, which matters for Jumbo and Extra Large — those grades sell out in peak weeks. Corporate and HoReCa orders from 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg) upward can be arranged with multi-destination dispatch; contact us directly for that.

Ratnagiri Alphonso mango is priced at ₹1,849–₹5,399 per box. Devgad Alphonso is ₹1,849–₹5,499. Price varies by grade (Small to Jumbo) and box size (half dozen, one dozen, two dozen).

Most metro cities receive orders in 20–24 hours. All other locations get delivery in 1–3 days. We dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, covering 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India.

People Also Ask

Can I buy Alphonso mangoes in the USA?

Fresh Alphonso mangoes from India cannot be legally imported into the USA as whole fresh fruit — USDA APHIS phytosanitary rules block most fresh Indian mangoes. You can buy Alphonso pulp, Aamras, or mango products shipped internationally. For fresh fruit, AlphonsoMango.in ships across 15,000–17,000 Indian pin codes during the February–June season.

If you are based in the USA and want the real thing during your next India visit, pre-orders open well before the March–May peak — worth planning around.

How expensive is an Alphonso mango?

At AlphonsoMango.in, Ratnagiri Alphonso boxes start at ₹1,849 for a half dozen and go up to ₹5,399 for two dozen Jumbo-grade fruit. Devgad Alphonso runs ₹1,849–₹5,499 for the same range. Per fruit, that works out to roughly ₹150–₹460 depending on grade and box size chosen.

Jumbo-grade fruit (275–300 g each), sourced from sea-facing orchards in villages like Dahibav and Vijaydurg, costs more — the weight and Brix consistency at that grade justify it.

Is Alphonso the best mango in the world?

Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad consistently scores Brix of 18–24° at full ripeness — measurably higher than most commercial varieties worldwide. Its fibre content is low, the pulp-to-seed ratio is high, and the terpene profile produces a saffron-tinged aroma no other variety replicates. It holds GI Tag No. 139, a legal recognition of its unique geographic origin.

Whether it is "the best" is a matter of palate, but the Gold Medal at India's ODOP Awards 2024 for Ratnagiri Alphonso is not a subjective call.

What country is Alphonso mango from?

Alphonso mango is from India, specifically the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. It holds Geographical Indication No. 139 covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — laterite soil, sea-facing slopes, and the microclimate of villages like Pawas, Nachane, Dahibav and Vijaydurg are what make the fruit what it is. No other region can legally carry the GI-tagged name.

The name traces to Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese viceroy who introduced grafting techniques to Goa in the 16th century — but the soil and the climate that shaped the variety are entirely Konkan.
