Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?

Both carry GI Tag No. 139. The difference is in texture, Brix profile and what customers repeatedly tell us — north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad. Here is a direct comparison across the grades we sell.

Prashant Powle selects the source villages each season based on Brix consistency and tree age. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old. Younger trees in the same village can read 2–3° lower on the refractometer — which is why we grade by weight and Brix together, not just by size.

Delivery Across India

Every box travels from harvest to your door in roughly 48–72 hours total. The fruit spends about two hours getting from the orchard to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, then 10–12 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse. There it rests on a hay bed for 24–48 hours of natural ripening — no gas, no chambers — before dispatch.

From Mumbai, courier partners are BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, assigned by pin code. Metro cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata — receive orders in 20–24 hours. Everywhere else within the 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes gets the box in 1–3 days.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) carton, 130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation, courier-grade. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm depending on fruit size) on a hay bed. The 12-slot partition takes the transit pressure so the fruit does not. Six air holes on the top and bottom panels keep airflow active during the ripening window after delivery.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso July through January. That is the honest limit: the season ends in June, and we will not sell stored or cold-chain-blended fruit as fresh Hapus.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Alphonso mangoes from Konkan — order mangoes online get sweet fix

We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. In Devgad taluka alone: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon (Devgad), Tambaldeg, Ilve, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde and Mandivali. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Shirgaon (Ratnagiri), Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi.

These are sea-facing orchards, most 12–25 years old. The salt-laden breeze off the Arabian Sea, the laterite soil, and the specific microclimate of the Konkan coast combine to produce a flavour profile that orchards 200 km inland simply cannot replicate — Brix measurements from Nasik or Pune Alphonso consistently track 3–5° lower in our grading records.

Our 100+ partner farmer families follow strict cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest. Fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera allows precise cutting without the fruit ever falling.

What does GI Tag No. 139 mean for the buyer?

GI Tag No. 139 is assigned specifically to Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) for Ratnagiri fruit, and AU/6932 for Devgad fruit. No other entity is named here. If a seller cannot cite an AU number, the GI claim is unverified.

How the Fruit Is Ripened

Natural hay-bed ripening of Alphonso mangoes — order mangoes online without carbide

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. At the Mumbai packhouse, the 24–48 hours on hay is monitored ripening — not gas-triggered. Temperature-controlled rooms maintain the process without forcing it.

The difference in the cup is real. Carbide-ripened fruit turns yellow on the outside before the sugars migrate through the pulp, giving you a sweet skin and a starchy centre. Hay-ripened Alphonso ripens from the seed outward: by the time the skin shows full colour, the Brix at the core and at the flesh near the skin are within 1–2° of each other across the 18–24° range we measure.

Fruit ships at 70–80% ripeness. It completes the process within about three days of delivery — faster in a warm kitchen, slower in the fridge. Do not refrigerate until the fruit is fully ripe.

Quality and Testing

Every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues — including spongy tissue — and external deformities before packing. This is not a visual inspection line; the scanner flags internal problems that a packer's eye cannot catch.

Pesticide residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues: 27 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg); thiamethoxam was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex maximum of 0.2 mg/kg. All 28 residues are within Codex maximum residue limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free," because one residue was detected within those limits.

If transit damages or quality fails a fruit, report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

Our verified buyer rating on alphonsomango.in is 4.35★ on Judge.me. Of 47,000+ customers since 2020, 46% reorder, and the average customer takes 2.8 boxes per season.

How to Order Mangoes Online

  1. Step 1 — Select your variety and grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1849–₹5399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1849–₹5499) on the product page, then pick your weight grade — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — and your box size: half dozen, one dozen or two dozen.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart and check out. Enter your delivery pin code at checkout; the system confirms serviceability across 15,000–17,000 pin codes and assigns the right courier partner automatically.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch. Orders go out via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities in 1–3 days from dispatch.

Pre-orders can be cancelled only before dispatch. Once the fruit leaves the packhouse, cancellation is not possible — the cold chain is live.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with the peak between March and May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso outside this window. July through January, the product pages will show as out of stock — that is accurate, not a technical error.

Early-season fruit (February–March) tends to run smaller and slightly lower on the Brix scale. The peak-season fruit from April, especially from Devgad's Girye and Jamsande villages, consistently hits the upper range of 18–24° Brix. Late-May fruit from Ratnagiri's Pawas belt holds well into June in good years, though the 2025 season was compressed by erratic pre-monsoon weather — Prashant Powle discussed this publicly in The Economic Times, June 2026.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level product award that reflects the region's standing, not a brand-specific prize.

What You Actually Get Nutritionally

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). That is per 100 g of pulp — a medium Alphonso at 200 g gives you close to a full day's requirement for women in one sitting.

Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in Alphonso skin and pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). We cite the study honestly: it was a cell study, not a human clinical trial, and we do not extrapolate to health claims beyond what the data supports.

Alphonso puree is suitable for babies from about 6 months as a first fruit — keep this as a serving suggestion, not medical advice, and introduce any new food one at a time.

People Also Ask

Which type of mango is the sweetest?

Alphonso (Hapus) from the Konkan coast — Ratnagiri and Devgad — is widely considered India's sweetest mango, with Brix readings of 18 to 24° at full ripeness. Devgad Alphonso typically sits at the upper end of that range, giving it a deeper, silkier sweetness than most other varieties grown inland.

For context: Nasik or Pune Alphonso fruit tracks 3–5° lower on the refractometer in our own grading records — the sea-facing laterite orchards of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri are not easily replicated.

Where is the best place to buy mangoes?

Buy directly from a GI-authorised source — one that can cite an Authorised User number for GI No. 139 and dispatches within 48–72 hours of harvest. AlphonsoMango.in (Powle Home Foods, AU/5974/GI/139/260) sources from 55 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg and delivers to 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India in 1–3 days.

If a seller cannot name their AU number, their GI claim is unverified — regardless of what the label says.

Which mango brand is best?

The honest answer is: no single brand title settles this, but the markers that matter are GI authorisation, harvest-to-dispatch time under 72 hours, natural ripening without carbide, and independently tested residue levels. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, dispatches within 48–72 hours of harvest, and has served 47,000+ customers since 2020 with a 4.35-star verified-buyer rating.

The 46% repeat-order rate and an average of 2.8 boxes per customer per season tell you more than any marketing claim.
