Alphonso Mango benefits for Pregnancy - AlphonsoMango.in

Mango during pregnancy is safe in moderation — one to two Alphonso mangoes daily fits within the recommended vitamin A ceiling of 10,000 IU. Fresh supply runs February to June (peak March–May), with Brix 18–24° and GI No. 139 origin verified by Powle Home Foods.

These are the two products most pregnant customers ask us about — both ripened on natural hay beds, both independently tested, both dispatched from our Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose in Pregnancy?

Both carry GI No. 139. The flavour difference is real but subtle. Here is how they compare on the measures that matter if you are buying for a pregnant family member.

Factor Ratnagiri Alphonso Devgad Alphonso

Season window February–June (peak March–May) February–June (peak April–June)

If taste is the only deciding factor, most first-time buyers prefer Devgad for its depth of sweetness. If your pregnancy cravings run toward the slightly tangy, Ratnagiri is the one. Both are tested by Envirocare Labs (NABL, Thane) — all 28 residue panels within Codex limits.

Delivery Across India

Every box ships within 48–72 hours of harvest: roughly two hours from the tree to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, then ten to twelve hours by air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse, then twenty-four to forty-eight hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch. Fruit reaches you at 70–80% ripeness and finishes ripening within about three days of delivery.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune) typically receive within twenty to twenty-four hours of dispatch. Everywhere else: one to three days. We cover fifteen thousand to seventeen thousand serviceable pin codes across India.

Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated CFB box (130 gsm, alternate flute, courier-grade), a twelve-slot partition that takes transit pressure instead of the fruit, six air holes for airflow, and every mango in an individual foam-net sleeve. The diamond mesh of the sleeve keeps condensation from sitting on the skin — important because Alphonso lenticels blacken when wet and rubbed.

We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January. If you need mango outside the season, our Aamras and mango pulp are available year-round.

How to Order

  1. Select your product: Choose W180 Jumbo Cashew Nuts at ₹400 or Masala Cashew Nuts from ₹350, depending on your preference. During mango season (February–June), Alphonso mango is also available in half-dozen, one-dozen and two-dozen boxes.
  2. Add to cart: Use the product pages linked above. No minimum order for individual boxes; HoReCa and corporate orders start from five dozen (approximately fifteen to twenty kg).
  3. Dispatch: Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, and reaches most Indian cities within one to three days.

Is Mango Safe During Pregnancy?

Mangoes for pregnancy — Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad, GI certified

Yes — with a sensible limit. The concern most gynaecologists raise is not mango itself but excess vitamin A. One ripe Alphonso (roughly 150–200 g of pulp) contributes around 2,250 IU of vitamin A. The safe upper ceiling during pregnancy is 10,000 IU per day. One to two mangoes fits well within that, provided the rest of your diet is not already very high in liver or fortified foods.

The second concern is artificial ripening. Calcium carbide, used widely by unregulated vendors, releases acetylene gas that mimics ethylene. Its residues are not safe for anyone, and the risk is higher during pregnancy. Our fruit is ripened on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms — no carbide, no ethylene chambers. Envirocare Labs (NABL-accredited, Thane, certificate TC-8284) tests our fruit weekly through the season. The April 2025 report (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, dated 5 April 2025) shows all 28 residue panels within Codex maximum residue limits. One residue — thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg against a permissible limit of 0.2 mg/kg — was detected. We say "within Codex limits," not "pesticide-free," because that one detection matters and you deserve to know it.

Does mango help with pregnancy nausea?

Many women we speak to — and we have spoken to a lot over 47,000 orders since 2020 — say the sweet-sour profile of a chilled Alphonso at Brix 18–20° settles morning sickness better than plain crackers. The vitamin B6 in mango (0.134 mg per 100 g, roughly 10% of RDA) has a documented role in reducing nausea. The fibre-free pulp of Alphonso means it digests cleanly without the bloating that some high-fibre foods cause in the first trimester.

Alphonso is not a generic fruit. The sea-facing orchards of Devgad and Ratnagiri — villages like Pawas, Golap, Dahibav and Girye — produce fruit with a Brix of 18 to 24°. That sugar concentration is not decoration; it reflects a pulp density that carries proportionally more of every micronutrient below.

Vitamin A and fetal eye development

One Alphonso mango delivers roughly 2,250 IU of beta-carotene. Your body converts beta-carotene to vitamin A as needed, which makes it far safer than preformed retinol from animal sources — there is essentially no risk of hypervitaminosis A from fruit-sourced beta-carotene at normal intake levels. Vitamin A supports the embryonic growth of the cornea, retina and optic nerve in the developing fetus.

Folic acid and neural tube protection

Folate (vitamin B9) is the nutrient most directly linked to neural tube defect prevention — conditions like spina bifida, where the spine and spinal cord do not close fully during the first weeks of development. Alphonso pulp contains around 14 mcg of folate per 100 g. That is not a replacement for a prescribed supplement, but it is a meaningful dietary contribution, especially early in the first trimester before many women know they are pregnant.

Vitamin C and iron absorption

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. Per the ICMR-NIN 2020 guidelines, the RDA for adult women is 65 mg per day. A 100 g serving covers about 50% of that. Beyond immunity, vitamin C significantly improves non-haem iron absorption from plant foods — relevant for any vegetarian or vegan pregnancy diet.

Dietary fibre and first-trimester constipation

Constipation affects most women in the first trimester, driven by progesterone slowing the gut. Alphonso provides 1.8 g of dietary fibre per 100 g — gentle enough not to cause excessive gas, sufficient to normalise bowel movement when combined with adequate hydration. One to two mangoes per day is the practical ceiling; more than that and the natural sugars accumulate faster than the fibre benefit compounds.

Vitamin B6 and mood regulation

Pregnancy-related irritability and mood swings have a neurochemical basis, and B6 is one of the inputs in serotonin synthesis. At 0.134 mg per 100 g (approximately 10% of RDA), mango is not a therapeutic dose, but it is a consistent daily contribution when eaten through the season.

Copper and bone formation

Copper at 0.11 mg per 100 g supports red blood cell formation and lays structural groundwork for the baby's bones. Most pregnancy conversations skip copper entirely — it is not dramatic. But steady dietary copper through a three-month mango season from a Devgad orchard is a quieter kind of nutrition that adds up.

Nutrition Facts: What You Actually Get per 100 g

Nutrient Amount per 100 g Relevance in Pregnancy
Vitamin A (beta-carotene) ~2,250 IU Fetal eye and immune development; safe form (plant-sourced)
Vitamin C 30–36 mg (~50% of women's RDA) Iron absorption, collagen formation, immunity
Vitamin B6 0.134 mg (~10% RDA) Nausea reduction, brain and nervous system of fetus
Folate (B9) ~14 mcg Neural tube defect prevention (supplement still essential)
Copper 0.11 mg Red blood cell and bone formation in baby
Dietary fibre 1.8 g (~2% RDA) Constipation relief, digestive normalisation

RDA references: ICMR-NIN 2020 for vitamin C (65 mg/day for adult women). Vitamin A ceiling of 10,000 IU/day from medical guidance for pregnancy. Do not exceed two mangoes daily if your prenatal supplement already contains high-dose vitamin A from retinol sources — check the label with your doctor.

Carbide-Free Matters Most When You Are Pregnant

Calcium carbide is classified as a Group 2B possible carcinogen by IARC. Market mangoes ripened with carbide carry acetylene gas residues on the skin and, to a lesser extent, in the pulp. During pregnancy, the precautionary principle applies more strictly than at any other time.

Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and built the sourcing network across fifty-five villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, set one non-negotiable from the start: no carbide, no ethylene chambers. Every lot is hay-bed ripened in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse, monitored for ripeness over twenty-four to forty-eight hours before dispatch. The lab testing runs every week through the season, not once at the start.

Storage and Serving During Pregnancy

Your box arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Leave the mangoes at room temperature for two to three days. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit — chilling below 12°C causes chilling injury and turns the pulp watery. Once fully ripe (the fruit gives slightly under thumb pressure and the stem end smells strongly of Alphonso), refrigerate and consume within two days.

Wash the skin before cutting even if you do not eat it — knife transfer from a contaminated skin to the pulp is a real route for surface bacteria. Cut the cheeks, scoop with a spoon, or cube and eat cold. Alphonso pulp is naturally fibre-free, which means you can also blend it directly into lassi or eat it as Aamras — no straining needed.

Can mango be given to babies born after a mango-season pregnancy?

Alphonso puree is suitable as a first food from around six months — our product FAQ covers this. Introduce in small amounts and watch for any reaction, as with any new food. This is a serving suggestion, not medical advice; check with your paediatrician.

People Also Ask

Can you eat mangoes while pregnant?

Yes, mangoes are safe during pregnancy in moderation. One to two ripe Alphonso mangoes — roughly 150–200 g of pulp each — contribute around 4,500 IU of vitamin A, well within the 10,000 IU daily ceiling. The real risk is artificially ripened fruit: carbide-ripened mangoes carry acetylene residues no pregnant woman should consume.

Which fruit is best for pregnancy?

Mango, papaya (ripe), banana, guava and citrus are strong choices during pregnancy, but ripe Alphonso mango stands out for its combination of vitamin C, vitamin A, folate and vitamin B6 in a fibre-free pulp that digests easily. One to two mangoes a day fits within the safe vitamin A ceiling of 10,000 IU.

If you buy during the February–June season, GI-certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad — ripened on natural hay beds, no carbide — is among the cleanest fruit you can give a pregnant woman.

What week of pregnancy is a mango?

A mango is used as a size reference at around week 20 to 21 of pregnancy, when the foetus measures roughly 25–27 cm from head to heel — close to the length of a medium Alphonso from our Devgad or Ratnagiri orchards. This is the stage most pregnancy apps and obstetric guides label the 'mango week.'
