Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Buy?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is subtle but real — our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad. Here is what the numbers say.

Delivery Across India

Fresh mango home delivery box packed with hay-bed ripened Alphonso mangoes in foam net sleeves

Every box travels from the orchard to your door in a chain we control at each step. Harvest to dispatch takes 48–72 hours: about 2 hours from tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned transport to the Mumbai packhouse, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then courier dispatch.

Transit after dispatch: 20–24 hours to metro cities, 1–3 days elsewhere across 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) carton, 130 gsm, with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed, with six air holes top and bottom to keep airflow going during the ripening window. This stops the one thing that ruins courier mangoes: latex from a stem drip cross-contaminating the skin of neighbouring fruit, which turns those characteristic lenticels black.

If fruit arrives damaged, we replace it — 100% damage replacement with photo evidence submitted within 24 hours of delivery.

We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January. That is an honest limit of the season, not a gap in the service.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, built sourcing across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Mirya and others. On the Devgad and Sindhudurg side: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Girye, Kunkeshwar and 18 more villages, plus Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda in Malvan and Vengurla talukas.

Partner orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Cultivation follows SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest.

Harvesting is done by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera lets the harvester see and cut without climbing. That single practice eliminates the bruising that starts spongy tissue before the fruit even leaves the orchard.

How We Ripen the Mangoes

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

Before packing, every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues like spongy tissue and external deformities. A fruit that does not pass does not ship — that is a harder filter than any market sorting line we have seen.

After harvest, controlled hot-water treatment reduces surface issues and extends shelf life. Post-harvest cooling follows at the packhouse before transport in air-conditioned vehicles.

Pesticide residue is tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. One residue, thiamethoxam, measured 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg — well within range. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not claim pesticide-free.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select grade and variety. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1849–₹5399) or Devgad (₹1849–₹5499), then pick your weight grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g).
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart. Select your box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen — and complete checkout with your delivery pin code.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch. We ship via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code; most Indian cities receive the order in 1–3 days.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak fruit — highest Brix, deepest colour, firmest flesh — through March, April and May. Outside this window, we do not ship fresh mangoes. If you are reading this in August, bookmark the page and come back in February.

The 2026 season drew national attention. Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on weather stress and yield — the piece ran under the headline "Famous Alphonso mango is facing existential crisis this year." Irregular rain and heat across Ratnagiri compressed the peak window that year, which is exactly why sourcing across 55 villages matters: if Pawas has a short flush, Girye or Dahibav often compensates.

For gifting, 18% of our orders are sent as gifts. Corporate and HoReCa orders from 5 dozen upward — luxury hotel groups, event organisers, private banks, IT firms — dispatch to multiple destinations in a single order. In May 2026 we handled a multi-destination dispatch across India for a major international trade event organiser.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a compound found in mango pulp and peel, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study (Govindappa et al., 2011).

Alphonso puree is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — that is a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Check with your paediatrician for your child's specific readiness.

People Also Ask

Where can I buy mangoes online in the USA?

AlphonsoMango.in exports GI-certified Alphonso mangoes to the US, dispatched from our Mumbai packhouse after natural hay-bed ripening. We do not ship fresh fruit July to January — the season runs February to June. For US orders, visit alphonsomango.in and enter your delivery address at checkout to confirm availability for your location.

Where can I order mango online?

You can order GI-certified Alphonso mangoes at alphonsomango.in, with delivery across 15,000–17,000 pin codes in India in 1–3 days. Both Ratnagiri (₹1849–₹5399) and Devgad (₹1849–₹5499) varieties are available February to June. Fruit ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

Every box uses a 12-slot CFB partition and foam-net sleeves so the mangoes arrive without bruising or latex cross-contamination.

Why is mango so expensive in the US?

GI-certified Alphonso mangoes cost more in the US because air freight, customs handling, cold-chain transit across continents, and the strict quality grading needed to survive that journey all add to the base price. The fruit is hand-harvested using a pole-and-net mechanism — the tree is never shaken — which keeps bruising low but keeps labour costs real.

Buyers in India pay ₹1849 upward for a half-dozen box delivered in 1–3 days; the same traceability and ripening standard, exported, carries every step of that 10,000-km chain in the price.

Is there a mango shortage right now?

Yes, the 2025 season saw a significant supply squeeze. Prashant Powle of AlphonsoMango.in — GI-certified Ratnagiri Alphonso grower and trader — told The Economic Times in June 2026 that unseasonal rain and erratic flowering across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg cut yields sharply, creating genuine scarcity for authenticated GI fruit.

If you are ordering now, check pin-code availability at checkout — we dispatch only within the February–June window and do not sell fresh Alphonso out of season.
