Hapus aam is the Marathi and Hindi name for the Alphonso mango, grown on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, covered by GI No. 139 and in season about February to June. AlphonsoMango.in sells it by the dozen from Rs 1,849.
What hapus aam is

Hapus is the Marathi word, aam is Hindi for mango, and together they name one fruit: the Alphonso mango. In English it is simply Alphonso. In Marathi you will also hear hapus amba, since amba is Marathi for mango, and in Konkani the fruit is called aamba. Spellings wander: Haapus, Hapoos, Hapus. They all mean the same variety.
The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic, so a named variety such as Alphonso is propagated by grafting, which is why hapus trees across the Konkan are genetically the same fruit and why the name has held for centuries.

Where hapus aam grows
Hapus aam kaha hota hai? On the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Konkan is the stretch of India's western coast between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau, and Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are among its districts. Ratnagiri is a district; Devgad is a taluka inside Sindhudurg district. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139).
We are Powle Home Foods, Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our fruit is sourced across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and we hold the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Details are on our Brand Facts page. The GI tag applies to Alphonso only, and it tells you where the fruit grew, not how any one box will taste.
Mangoes called hapus are sold in many markets, and the word gets used loosely. The honest test is to ask which district the fruit came from and whether the seller can show a GI Authorised User number. Our guide to how to identify authentic hapus has the full checklist.
Hapus aam kaisa hota hai: what the fruit is like
Alphonso pulp is rich, creamy and non-fibrous. The skin ripens from green to yellow and gold, often unevenly, and the aroma is strong enough to announce a ripe fruit from across the room. Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g. The flesh is deep orange when ripe and the stone is small for the size of the fruit.

Alphonso can develop spongy tissue, an internal flesh disorder. ICAR-IIHR research traced it to the seed shifting into germination mode at about 60% fruit maturity. It cannot be seen from outside, which is one reason careful harvest timing matters. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour.
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide use for ripening is prohibited by FSSAI under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. No home test proves how a fruit was ripened; a bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof.
Hapus aam price: how it is quoted
Hapus is sold by the dozen and graded by fruit size, and that is how we quote it. Our Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and Devgad Alphonso Mango start from Rs 1,849 per dozen for the smallest grade, and the largest Ratnagiri option goes up to Rs 5,399. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Check the product page for today's price.
Searches for 1 kg hapus aam price are common, and the honest answer is that a kilo is not a useful unit for this fruit. Three large hapus and six small ones both make a kilo, and they are not the same purchase. When a market quotes a rate per kilo or per peti, ask the fruit size and the count. We do not quote a per-kilo rate.
Why does hapus cost more than other mangoes? Limited growing belt, hand harvest, and traceable origin. None of that is marketing; it is cost. Our Ratnagiri hapus aam price guide breaks down the grades.
Hapus aam season
Hapus is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh hapus is not sold outside those months. Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days, so the box you receive is sent firm and finishes ripening at home over a few days.
- Lay the fruit out in a single layer at room temperature, in shade.
- Check daily; a slight give near the stalk and a sweet smell mean ripe.
- Refrigerate only ripe fruit, and eat it within a few days.
Between seasons, the Alphonso Mango Pulp tin is available all year in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590, and it makes a good hapus aamras. Our ripening guide covers each stage.
