What Is Aabush Aam?

Aabush aam is a regional term used across parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat for the Alphonso mango — locally called Hapus. The name Alphonso traces to Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese viceroy credited with introducing grafting techniques in Goa and Konkan in the 16th century. Over centuries, Konkan farmers refined the cultivar until it became what it is today: the highest-rated mango in the world by flavour score.

What Makes Hapus Aam a GI Product?

The Alphonso mango holds Geographical Indication (GI) No. 139, registered with the GI Registry of India. Only mangoes grown in specified talukas of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and adjoining Konkan districts qualify. AlphonsoMango.in operates under GI Authorised User credential AU/5974/GI/139/260 — one of the few online sellers with this legal authorisation. Buying from an authorised user is the only way to be certain the fruit is genuine Hapus and not a lookalike.

What Is the Brix Level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso typically measures 23–24 °Brix at optimal ripeness. Ratnagiri Alphonso measures 22–23 °Brix. Both figures are well above the 18–19 °Brix common in non-GI mango varieties. Higher Brix means more natural sugar, richer aroma, and that signature honey-saffron flavour that makes aabush aam irreplaceable.

Delivery Across India

Orders placed before 11:00 AM IST ship the same day via BlueDart air cargo. Transit windows:

  • Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad): 1 day
  • Tier-2 cities (Pune, Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Jaipur): 1–2 days

Mangoes are packed in food-grade corrugated boxes with cushioned hay lining to absorb shocks in transit. Each box is sealed, labelled, and dispatched cold. We do not dispatch on Sundays or public holidays. We do not currently deliver outside serviceable BlueDart pincodes — check your pincode at checkout before placing an order.

Origin and History of Aabush Aam

The Alphonso cultivar has been grown in the Konkan coast for over four centuries. Traders from Surat, Nagpur, and Indore were among the first to recognise its superior flavour. By the 20th century, Hapus aam reached European markets, and today it is exported to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, Japan, and Korea.

The terroir of Ratnagiri and Devgad — laterite soil, sea breeze, well-defined dry summers, and moderate humidity — cannot be replicated elsewhere. Mangoes from the same variety grown in other regions simply do not achieve the same Brix, aroma profile, or shelf life.

Which Villages Does AlphonsoMango.in Source From?

Sourcing spans 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas, including orchards in Rajapur and Lanja. Village-level traceability means every dozen shipped can be traced to a named orchard block. This is not common in the wholesale mango trade, where fruit from multiple origins is blended and sold under a single label.

Features of Hapus Aam That Set It Apart

Hapus aabush aam — best quality Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad
  • Fibreless pulp: Smooth, creamy, and uniform — no stringy texture.
  • Saffron-gold colour: The pulp colour is a natural indicator of ripeness and variety purity.
  • Fragrance: A single ripe Hapus fills a room. The aroma compounds are concentrated by the Konkan climate.
  • Shelf life: Properly ripened Hapus lasts 3–5 days at room temperature, longer when refrigerated just before full ripeness.
  • Carbide-free: Natural ripening only. No calcium carbide is used at any stage — from orchard to doorstep.
  • Loved pan-India: Customers in Ahmedabad, Surat, Indore, Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai order every season.

Nutritional Value of Hapus Aam

Per 100 g of ripe Alphonso pulp: approximately 60–70 kcal, 15–17 g natural sugars, 0.5 g protein, and meaningful levels of Vitamin C, Vitamin A (beta-carotene), and Vitamin B6. The saffron-orange pulp colour signals high beta-carotene density — the deepest colour, the higher the concentration.

Natural Ripening — The Hay-Bed Method

Every mango sold by AlphonsoMango.in is ripened on hay beds. Freshly harvested fruit — picked at the precise maturity index — is laid on dry grass in ventilated rooms. The fruit generates its own ethylene, ripening from within over 3–5 days. This method produces uniform colour, full flavour development, and safe fruit.

Calcium carbide ripening is illegal under FSSAI rules and produces fruit that looks ripe but lacks flavour and carries residual health risk. We do not use it. We never have.

How to Store Hapus Aam After Delivery

When your box arrives, the mangoes will be partially ripe — firm-soft to the touch. Keep them at room temperature in a ventilated spot for 1–2 days until the skin turns fully yellow and the fruit gives slightly under gentle pressure. Refrigerate only when fully ripe. Eat within 2–3 days of reaching peak ripeness.

Season and Availability

Alphonso (Hapus) mango season begins in late March for early-variety orchards in Devgad. The main commercial season runs April through June. By early July, the orchards are bare. We do not sell Hapus mangoes between July and February. Any seller offering "Alphonso" outside this window is selling a different variety under a misleading label.

When Is the Best Time to Order Aabush Aam?

Order between mid-April and late May for peak-season fruit at maximum Brix. Early-season (late March to mid-April) fruit is excellent but smaller. Late-season (June) fruit is larger but supply is limited and prices rise. Pre-booking in March is advisable for guaranteed allocation in peak weeks.
