Sweet Secrets Unlocked: Mango Madness - AlphonsoMango.in

Sweet secrets unlocked: mango madness starts with knowing your variety. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad — GI No. 139 — hits 18–24° Brix at peak ripeness, arrives in 1–3 days anywhere in India, and is harvested only February to June.

Sweet secrets unlocked mango madness — GI-certified Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Devgad

We source Alphonso from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — Pawas, Golap, Nachane on the Ratnagiri side; Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar on the Sindhudurg side, among others. Prashant Powle selects orchards personally on three criteria: Brix consistency tree to tree, orchard age (12–25 years is the sweet spot), and the farmer's alternate-bearing practice. Every fruit is weighed, graded, and scanned for internal spongy tissue before it leaves the packhouse.

Fresh Alphonso is available February to June only. We do not sell fresh fruit July to January — that is honest, not a limitation we apologise for.

Both carry the same GI number. The difference is terroir: Devgad fruit sits closer to the Arabian Sea on three sides, which we believe pulls the Brix toward the upper end of that 18–24° window more consistently through April. That is an observation from grading records, not a controlled study.

Delivery Across India

Ratnagiri Alphonso mango packed for delivery across India — natural hay-bed ripening, GI certified

Fruit leaves the Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point within 48–72 hours of harvest. The journey: two hours from tree to packhouse, post-harvest cooling, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, then dispatch. Metro cities receive their box in 20–24 hours from dispatch. Most other Indian cities receive it in 1–3 days. We cover 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Fruit ships at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery. If fruit arrives damaged, send a photo within 24 hours of delivery for 100% replacement.

The box itself does the structural work: a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition, six air holes top and bottom, and every mango in its own foam-net sleeve. The sleeve prevents lenticel blackening from skin friction — something that happens fast on Alphonso during transit if the fruit rubs against anything.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select Grade: Go to the mango collection, pick Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, then choose your weight grade (Small 150–180 g through Jumbo 275–300 g) based on whether you want more fruit per box or larger individual pieces.
  2. Step 2 — Add to Cart: Choose your box size — half dozen, one dozen, or two dozen — and confirm your delivery pin code is serviceable at checkout.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch: Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on pin code, reaching most Indian cities within 1–3 days.

Why Alphonso Is Called the King of Fruits

The title is not marketing. It comes from a specific combination: the highest recorded natural Brix among commercially available Indian mangoes, a saffron-orange pulp that is fibre-free, and a shelf life short enough that the fruit was historically available only to those who could reach Konkan by road before it softened. Cold chains changed that. What did not change is the source — sea-facing orchards, laterite soil, the salt-laced western wind off the Arabian Sea.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. That is a district-product award, not a certificate to any single seller. We mention it because the recognition sits with the origin, not with us.

What Makes GI No. 139 Different from Generic "Hapus"?

GI No. 139 covers Alphonso grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts only. Fruit from outside this belt — even fruit labelled Hapus — does not qualify. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019). This means we are legally accountable to the GI Registry for every box we ship as Alphonso.

We also hold FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579, which cover food safety standards and agricultural export compliance respectively. These are not optional for a brand exporting to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan simultaneously.

Natural Ripening: What It Actually Means

We use natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours the fruit spends at the Mumbai packhouse is time on hay, monitored — not gas-triggered. This is what we mean when we say naturally ripened, and it is the practice across all 100-plus partner farmer families in our network.

Independently tested through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. Report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025: all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We will not call this pesticide-free — one residue was detected, within limit. We call it what it is: independently tested, all residues within Codex limits.

What Is the Harvest Method?

Every fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with an attached camera positions the cut accurately. Once harvested, each mango is weighed, graded and AI/ML-assisted machine-scanned for spongy tissue and surface deformities before packing.

Nutrition You Can Verify

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. That is about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day), per 100 g serving. We cite ICMR-NIN 2020 because the older 2010 figure of 40 mg/day was revised upward and should not appear in current health writing.

Mangiferin, a compound in the fruit, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al., 2011. One cell study is one cell study — we are not claiming clinical outcomes. But the phytonutrient profile is real: beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, copper, and dietary fibre all present in meaningful quantities.

Alphonso puree is suitable as a first food for babies from about six months — this is a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Confirm with your paediatrician.

Mangoes and Blood Sugar: The Honest Position

Mangoes contain natural sugars and fibre. The fibre slows glucose absorption. Carotenoids in the peel may support insulin sensitivity. None of this means a diabetic can eat unlimited mango. Portion size matters. If you are managing blood sugar, two to three 100 g servings per day — and checking with your doctor — is the sensible approach.

Storage After Delivery

Fruit arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Leave it at room temperature for up to three days — it will ripen fully. Once soft, move it to the refrigerator and consume within two days. Do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso; cold interrupts the ripening process and flattens the flavour. Keep fruit away from strong-smelling foods — Alphonso skin is porous and picks up odours faster than most varieties.

Season Windows and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June. Peak is March to May. Outside this window, no fresh Alphonso exists on the tree — anyone selling fresh Hapus in August is selling something else. We stop taking fresh orders when the season ends and do not reopen until the following February at the earliest.

Kesar mango (GI No. 185, sourced from Junagadh and Gir) has a slightly overlapping but distinct season. Aamras, mango pulp and other processed items are available year-round from the site. Year-round alternatives include cashews, dates, saffron and dry fruits.

46% of our 47,000-plus customers reorder. Average is 2.8 boxes per customer per season. 18% of orders are gifts. We read those numbers as evidence that the fruit arrives as described — the repeat rate would not hold if it did not.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the 2025 yield crisis: "Famous Alphonso mango is facing existential crisis this year." That season, weather stress across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg reduced yields significantly. We sourced from 55 villages precisely because single-village dependence creates supply risk in exactly those years.

For corporate and HoReCa orders from five dozen (approximately 15–20 kg) upward, contact us directly. We have dispatched multi-destination corporate orders — including a May 2026 multi-city dispatch for a large exhibition organiser — and can coordinate bulk delivery across India within the same season window.

People Also Ask

What is in a mango madness?

Mango madness starts with variety knowledge. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad — GI No. 139 — hits 18–24° Brix at peak ripeness, giving fibre-free saffron-orange pulp with roughly 30–36 mg vitamin C per 100 g. Harvested February to June, naturally hay-bed ripened, it reaches most Indian cities within 1–3 days of dispatch.

Are mangoes high in sugar?

Ripe Alphonso contains natural sugars that register 18–24° Brix at peak season — high compared to most fruit, but the sugars come packaged with fibre, vitamin C at roughly 30–36 mg per 100 g, and mangiferin, a polyphenol studied for anti-inflammatory activity by Govindappa et al. in 2011. Whole fruit eaten in season is not the same as added sugar.

What is the Guinness World Record for the sweetest mango?

No Guinness World Record specifically for the sweetest mango variety exists in verified public records as of mid-2026. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is widely cited as the highest-Brix commercial Indian mango, reaching 18–24° at full ripeness, but that figure comes from grading and independent lab data, not a Guinness category.
