Buy NowRatnagiri vs Devgad: Which Hapus Aam?
Both varieties hold GI No. 139. The differences are real but subtle. Ratnagiri fruit tends toward a rounder shape and a sharper initial sweetness; Devgad fruit is slightly more oblong, often with a deeper saffron-yellow skin tone and marginally higher fibre-free flesh. Neither is "better" — they suit different uses.

Delivery Across India
We dispatch via BlueDart air cargo. Orders confirmed before 11 am reach the sorting hub the same evening. Transit time: Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad — 1 day. Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad — 1–2 days. Northeast India and Jammu — 2–3 days.
Each box uses a ventilated corrugated outer with food-grade hay lining inside. The hay is not decoration — it cushions the fruit and continues the natural ripening environment the orchards in Pawas and Rajapur villages use. We do not use carbide. If your fruit arrives unripe, leave it in the hay at room temperature for 24–48 hours.
We do not ship from July through February. The orchards are dormant. Anyone selling "fresh Ratnagiri hapus aam" in October is selling either imported fruit or something else entirely.
Origin: Where Ratnagiri Hapus Aam Comes From
Ratnagiri district sits on Maharashtra's Konkan coast, flanked by the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The laterite soil — iron-rich, slightly acidic — gives the Alphonso its characteristic low-fibre flesh and concentrated sugar. Coastal humidity keeps the skin thin and aromatic.
We source from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. Villages like Pawas, Ratnagiri taluka, and Devgad supply our premium grades. Prashant Powle, who leads sourcing at Powle Home Foods, visits orchards personally each February to assess flowering density before committing to volumes. This is not standard practice among online sellers — most book fruit sight-unseen through brokers.
Why the GI Tag Matters for Ratnagiri Hapus Aam
Geographical Indication No. 139 (Registry certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019) restricts use of the name "Ratnagiri Alphonso" to fruit grown within the defined Konkan zone. We hold Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260. That registration is publicly verifiable at the GI Registry, Chennai.
Without this tag, a seller can label any mango "hapus." We see this every season — Andhra and Karnataka-grown Alphonso sold as Ratnagiri at a fraction of the real price. The taste difference is obvious at first bite: laterite-grown Ratnagiri fruit hits 18 to 24°Brix; non-GI "hapus" from irrigated plains typically measures 14–16°Brix.
How to Identify Authentic Hapus Aam
What does genuine Ratnagiri hapus aam look like?
Skin: golden-yellow with a slight green blush at the stem end when freshly harvested. No red cheeks — that is a Kesar or Banganapalli trait. The aroma at the stem end is unmistakable: saffron-floral, not candy-sweet. Press gently — it yields slightly without going mushy. Weight per fruit: 150–250 g for standard grade, 250 g+ for premium.
Red flags when buying ratnagiri hapus aam online
Prices below ₹800 per dozen are a signal. Carbide-ripened fruit shows uniform yellow skin with no green tinge, feels soft throughout (including the seed area), and has an alcoholic or chemically sharp smell. Our hay-ripened fruit has an uneven colour progression — greener near the stem, golden at the base — exactly as it ripens on the tree.
Natural Ripening: Hay-Bed Method
Every box we ship uses hay-bed ripening. Fruit harvested at the mature-green stage is bedded in dry paddy hay for 3–5 days at ambient temperature (26–32°C). The hay insulates and the fruit's own ethylene drives ripening uniformly from inside out.
Carbide (calcium carbide, which releases acetylene gas) ripens fruit from the skin inward. The result: yellow skin, unripe core, no aroma development. It is banned by FSSAI for food ripening. We have never used it. Our FSSAI licence 10020022011783 covers all processing and packing operations.
How long does natural ripening take at home?
If the fruit arrives firm, leave it in the box — in the hay — at room temperature. 1–2 days in summer (30°C+). 2–3 days if your home is air-conditioned below 24°C. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit; cold stops ripening and causes skin blackening.
Season, Availability and Ratnagiri Hapus Aam Price
The season opens in mid-March and closes by late June. Early-season fruit (March) is smaller, scarcer, and commands the highest prices. Mid-season (April–May) gives the best combination of size, sweetness, and value. Late-season (June) sees prices fall as supply peaks, but quality remains high if the pre-monsoon rains hold off.
Ratnagiri hapus aam price: what drives the number?
Four things move the price: grade (Premium/Regular), fruit size (small/medium/large), year's yield (drought or unseasonal rain cuts supply), and transport cost. Our 2024–25 prices ranged ₹1849–₹5399 per box. A ₹5399 box is premium-grade, large-sized fruit — roughly 12–14 mangoes above 200 g each.
Why is ratnagiri hapus aam expensive compared to other mangoes?
GI-zone orchards cannot be expanded arbitrarily. The laterite plateau between the Ghats and the sea covers a fixed area. Trees take 5–7 years to fruit properly. A single mature tree yields 200–400 fruits per season. Labour for hand-sorting and hay-packing adds ₹40–₹80 per dozen over bulk market costs. The price reflects genuine scarcity, not just marketing.
When is ratnagiri hapus aam cheapest?
Typically the last two weeks of May and the first week of June, when peak harvest aligns with school summer holidays. Prices in this window can be 15–20% lower than early-season rates. We do not guarantee this every year — a single unseasonal hailstorm in Ratnagiri taluka can reverse it overnight.
Understanding sizes and grades
We grade by weight: small (under 150 g), medium (150–200 g), large (200–250 g), premium large (250 g+). For aamras and purees, medium is ideal — higher pulp-to-skin ratio. For gifting or fresh eating, premium large. Small fruit often has the most concentrated flavour because the tree puts more sugar into fewer cells.
Storage and Ripening at Home
How long does ratnagiri hapus aam last after delivery?
Ripe fruit keeps 2–4 days at room temperature, 5–7 days refrigerated (place in a paper bag, not a plastic one, to prevent moisture buildup). Cut fruit should go in an airtight container in the fridge and be eaten within 2 days.
Can I freeze hapus aam pulp?
Yes. Scoop the pulp, portion into 100 g silicone trays, freeze solid, then transfer to zip bags. Frozen pulp keeps for 6 months. It will not taste exactly like fresh fruit, but it beats any commercial mango pulp product by a wide margin — and lets you make aamras in December when the orchards are bare.
Storage tips: what not to do
Do not store unripe mangoes in the fridge. Do not stack heavy objects on ripe fruit. Do not wash fruit and leave it wet — surface moisture invites mould at the stem scar. Wash only when you are about to eat.
Nutrition and Health
Nutritional value of Ratnagiri hapus aam
Per 100 g of ripe Alphonso pulp: approximately 83 kcal, 20 g carbohydrates (of which 14–16 g natural sugars at peak Brix), 1.8 g dietary fibre, Vitamin C ~36 mg (40% of RDA), Vitamin A ~765 IU, potassium ~168 mg. The carotenoid responsible for the deep yellow colour — beta-carotene — is present at higher concentrations in laterite-grown Alphonso than in irrigated-plain varieties (Salvi et al., IARI 2019 compositional study on Konkan Alphonso).
Incorporating hapus aam into your diet
The simplest use: peel, eat over a plate to catch the juice. For aamras, blend pulp with a pinch of cardamom and a tablespoon of milk — no sugar needed at 20°Brix. Mango lassi, mango rice, sliced over vanilla ice cream, or as a base for a raw mango-ginger chutney in early season when fruit is still slightly tart. The seed kernel, dried and powdered, is used in folk medicine across Konkan for digestive complaints — we do not sell it, but the farmers we work with have not thrown one away in 20 years.
