Both are genuine GI-certified Alphonso. The differences are measurable, not marketing.
| Parameter | Ratnagiri Alphonso | Devgad Alphonso |
|---|---|---|
| GI Number | GI No. 139 | GI No. 139 |
| Brix (sweetness) | 18 to 24 Brix | 18 to 24 Brix |
| Season window | Mid-March to end May | April to mid-June |
| Typical weight per mango | 150–250 g | 180–280 g |
| Price range (box) | ₹1,849–₹5,399 | ₹1,849–₹5,499 |
| Skin colour at peak ripeness | Deep saffron-yellow | Golden yellow, slightly richer hue |
| Export markets | US, UK, UAE, Singapore, Japan | US, UK, UAE, Singapore, Japan |
If you want slightly higher Brix and a longer season window, pick Devgad. If mid-March availability matters — because you want the first box of the year — Ratnagiri ships earlier by roughly two weeks.
Delivery to Mumbai
Orders placed before 4 PM on a working day dispatch the same evening via BlueDart air freight. Mumbai receives most shipments within 24 hours of dispatch — rarely 48. The outer limit is 3 days, which covers remote pin codes in Greater Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
Fruit arrives in a reinforced corrugated box with padded wood wool nesting. Each mango rests in an individual cup. The box holds temperature reasonably well in transit, but we do not use gel packs — air freight is fast enough that we have not needed them on Mumbai routes in five seasons.
If fruit arrives unripe (which happens on early-April batches when the orchard was harvested slightly green to beat a rain window), place the mangoes in a single layer at room temperature. They ripen in 2–4 days. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit — it kills the aroma. If you receive damaged fruit, photograph the box and the fruit within 24 hours of delivery and contact us. We replace or refund.
Hapus Mango Price in Mumbai
Crawford Market and Dadar wholesale prices for hapus fluctuate hard. In the 2024 season, a dozen grade-A Ratnagiri Alphonso at Crawford Market ran ₹800–₹1,500 depending on week and vendor. Roadside carts in Bandra and Andheri sold "Ratnagiri hapus" at ₹500–₹700 per dozen — most of it was Kesar or Karnataka fruit with no GI backing, relabelled.
Our online price of ₹1,849 per box (roughly 12 medium mangoes) is higher than the cart price. That gap covers three things: GI certification with documentary trail back to the orchard, carbide-free ripening, and air freight dispatch. If you're buying for a gift, an NRI household, or simply want assurance that you're eating actual Devgad or Ratnagiri fruit, that gap is worth it to most of our 47,000+ customers.
What is the per-dozen hapus mango price in Mumbai in 2025?
At retail in Mumbai, expect ₹700–₹1,500 per dozen depending on grade and vendor credibility. Our online price for a certified GI box starts at ₹1,849. Export-grade, larger fruit (250 g+ per mango) runs up to ₹5,499 per box.
Why do hapus mango prices vary so much in Mumbai?
Three factors move the price: week of season (early April is expensive; mid-May is cheaper as supply peaks), grade (6-count vs 12-count boxes differ by size not quality), and certification (GI-tagged commands 30–50% over uncertified). Carbide-ripened fruit from Karnataka undercuts on price but tastes flatter and carries documented health risks from residual acetylene exposure.
Where Genuine Hapus Comes From
The laterite soil belt along the Konkan coast — from Ratnagiri district down through Devgad taluka — is the only place that produces what the GI system formally recognises as Alphonso mango under GI No. 139. The combination of sea breeze, humidity between 70–85% during flowering, and the red laterite soil creates a flavour profile that orchards in other states cannot replicate, regardless of the variety planted.
Prashant Powle sources from 48 villages spread across this belt. Villages like Nandgaon and Rajapur in Ratnagiri, and Devgad taluka near the Arabian Sea coast, have contributed to our supply for each of the five seasons since 2019. This is not contracted farming — it is a network of growers Prashant has visited personally, graded with, and returned to year after year.
The GI Authorised User credential (AU/5974/GI/139/260, Registry certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019) means we can legally call our fruit GI-tagged Alphonso. Most vendors — online and offline — cannot. Ask any seller for their GI authorisation number. If they don't have one, the tag is ornamental.
Natural Ripening, No Carbide
Calcium carbide ripening is banned under India's Food Safety and Standards Act. It is also common. Carbide-ripened mangoes yellow on the skin while the flesh stays white and starchy near the stone, and the aroma is thin. You can test at home: slice the fruit. If flesh at the seed is white and fibrous while the skin is fully yellow, the fruit was forced.
We use hay-bed ripening — the same practice Konkan farmers have used for generations. Harvested fruit goes into wooden crates lined with rice straw or dry grass. The fruit breathes, ethylene builds naturally, and ripening is even from skin to stone. The process takes 5–7 days post-harvest. It cannot be hurried to match an order spike, which is why we enforce dispatch dates rather than promising next-day fulfilment from stock.
Season, Storage and When Not to Order
Hapus mango season in Mumbai runs roughly mid-March to mid-June. Outside those months, we do not sell fresh Alphonso. From July to February, this site does not dispatch fresh mango. That is not a gap we are trying to fill with inferior fruit. It is the honest limit of what the Konkan orchard produces.
Once your box arrives ripe, store at room temperature for up to 3 days. Refrigerate only fully ripe fruit — 2 days maximum in the crisper drawer. Cold kills saffron aroma fast. Eat ripe hapus the day you chill it, or the next morning. After that, use it in aamras.
For aamras, peel, deseed, and blend. No sugar needed at 22+ Brix. A pinch of cardamom and a few strands of saffron work well, but the Alphonso from Devgad does not require either.
