Mumbai Mango Market: The Ultimate Mango Experience - AlphonsoMango.in

The Mumbai mango market means Crawford Market for retail and APMC Vashi in Navi Mumbai for wholesale. Alphonso arrives from February and is best from March to May. If you cannot get to either, AlphonsoMango.in delivers GI-certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad by Blue Dart.

The Mumbai mango market: Crawford Market and APMC Vashi

When people in the city say "the mango market", they usually mean one of two places. Crawford Market, officially Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, sits near CST station and is the old retail market. You go there to buy a few dozen for the house. APMC Vashi, in Navi Mumbai, is the wholesale market where traders, retailers and bulk buyers source fruit by the crate.

Both markets fill with Alphonso (Hapus), Kesar and other varieties through the season. Prices move with the variety, the grade, the day's supply and how many pieces sit in a box, so a number quoted by a friend last week may not hold. If you plan to buy at either market, go early in the day, compare two or three stalls and ask about count per dozen, not just price.

We are an online seller, so we are not a stall in either market. Powle Home Foods, which runs AlphonsoMango.in, is based in Mumbai, and our fruit comes from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt of the Konkan coast. This page explains how the city market works and how an online order compares, so you can pick what suits you.

Mumbai mango season: when to buy

The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. That is the window when Mumbai markets, fruit carts and apartment-society sellers are all full of Hapus. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold by us, while Alphonso pulp tins are available all year.

Many families buy their main boxes for aamras, gifting and eating fresh in the weeks from April to mid-May. Our season page lists the dates in detail, and the guide to the Alphonso mango season in Mumbai goes month by month.

  • February to March: the first fruit of the season.
  • April to May: broadest supply and the most choice of grade.
  • June: the tail end of the season, as stocks wind down.

What to ask any seller at a Mumbai mango market

A mango stall is a quick sale, and it is hard to check where a crate came from. Whether you buy from a market, a cart or an online shop, ask the same few things.

  • Which variety and which region? "Hapus" and "Alphonso" are the same variety. Ratnagiri and Devgad are the Konkan places the GI tag covers.
  • How many fruits are in the dozen, and what do they weigh? A dozen of our Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, so ask for the grade as well as the count.
  • How was it ripened? Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.
  • Can you show a licence? A food seller should be able to show an FSSAI licence number. Ours is 10020022011783.
  • What happens if the box is damaged? Ask before you pay. We ask customers to report damage within 24 hours of delivery.

No single look or smell proves how a mango was ripened or where it grew. A bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof. The reliable checks are the paperwork and the answers the seller gives you. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes covers the clues in more detail.

Buying Alphonso online in Mumbai instead

Which mango to pick: Alphonso or Kesar

Hapus is the Konkan Alphonso and is the usual gifting mango in Mumbai. Kesar is a Gujarat variety that many families buy for daily eating and for aamras. They are different varieties with different flavour, so many households order both. Our Kesar boxes start from Rs 999; our Kesar page explains the variety in more detail, and the Kesar Mango product page has current sizes.

If you only want to know which Konkan origin to pick, Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are both the same variety, and we do not rank one above the other. Choose by the grade and dozen size that suits your family. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso comparison explains the places.

Which is the biggest mango market in India?

APMC Vashi in Navi Mumbai is the main wholesale fruit market for the Mumbai region and is often described as one of the largest mango trading centres in India. Crawford Market near CST is the older retail market. We would not rank markets by size, so treat this as a general description.

Where is the cheapest fruit market in Mumbai?

Wholesale markets such as APMC Vashi are generally cheaper per crate than retail stalls, because traders and bulk buyers shop there. Crawford Market is a retail market, so expect retail rates. Prices move daily with variety and supply, so compare a few stalls and ask for the fruit count per dozen.

Which place in Maharashtra is famous for mangoes?

Ratnagiri and Devgad on the Konkan coast are the places most associated with Alphonso, also called Hapus. Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both sit in the Konkan Alphonso belt, and we source across 48 villages of it.

When is the mango season in Mumbai?

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold by us, but Alphonso pulp tins are available all year if you need the flavour for aamras or desserts.
