Buy Authentic Mangoes Alphonso Ratnagiri Online - AlphonsoMango.in

To buy authentic Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes online, choose a seller that names the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, quotes a GI certificate number, and shows grade by the dozen. Ours start at Rs 1,849 per dozen, ripened on hay beds and sent by Blue Dart.

Ratnagiri, the belt behind the name

Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, the narrow strip between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau. Its Alphonso, called Hapus locally, is the fruit that built the name. The district sits beside Sindhudurg, where Devgad taluka grows the same variety. We source across 55 villages in the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt and sell both names without ranking them.

I run AlphonsoMango.in with Powle Home Foods in Mumbai. We sold offline from 2019, have sold online since 2020, and have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. This page explains what "authentic" should mean when you buy Ratnagiri Alphonso on a screen, where you cannot hold the fruit first.

What the GI tag covers, and what it does not

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139. A geographical indication ties a product name to a place and to the producers authorised to use it. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). The public GI Registry record is linked under Sources below, so you can check the registration yourself.

  • It covers: the variety and the region of origin.
  • It does not cover: size, sweetness, ripeness on the day, or how the fruit travelled.
  • It is not a quality grade. Two GI-registered boxes can differ in fruit size and price.

So treat the GI as the first filter. Our GI tag article explains the credential in more detail.

What a genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso looks and smells like

Treat these as descriptions, not tests. Fruit varies with grade and with ripeness on the day, and no home check proves origin.

Typical features of ripe Alphonso
Feature What buyers usually see
Size Generally 150 to 300 g per fruit
Skin Yellow, often with a red or rosy blush on the shoulder
Shape Small and slightly rounded, with a gentle curve
Flesh Saffron-orange, rich, creamy and non-fibrous
Aroma Strong, fruity scent at the stalk end

The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof. Skin colour changes with ripeness, and a green-skinned Alphonso can be perfectly good. Our how to identify Alphonso mango guide covers the clues and their limits.

How the fruit is ripened

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, and ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

Harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, before dawn, with a zela pole fitted with a catching net. Harvest to ripening takes about 15 days, so your box may include some firm fruit. Alphonso can also develop spongy tissue, an internal flesh disorder that ICAR-IIHR research traced to the seed shifting into germination mode at about 60% fruit maturity; if you find a pale soft patch near the stone, that is the cause, not carbide.

Price, grade and the dozen

Ratnagiri Alphonso is sold by the dozen. On our Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango page the range runs from Rs 1,849 per dozen to Rs 5,399 for the largest grade, and the order-online listing goes to Rs 10,499 for its largest option. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. We show dozen prices only, and we suggest you compare dozens of the same grade across sellers.

Prices change, so check the product page for today's price. Kesar mango (Rs 999 half-dozen, Rs 1,699 dozen) and Pairi (from Rs 2,799 per dozen) are separate fruits; our Kesar mango page does not carry any GI claim.

Is a bigger Ratnagiri mango a better mango?

Not necessarily. Size sets the price, because a larger fruit holds more pulp, but sweetness and aroma depend on ripeness and on the fruit itself, and a small Alphonso can taste as good as a large one. Many people who cook with the fruit, or blend it into aamras, buy the smaller grades for that reason. Buyers who want to serve whole mangoes, or give them as a present, tend to choose the larger ones.

Think about what you will do with the box. If it is for family eating over a week, two dozen of a smaller grade may last better than one dozen of the largest, because the fruit ripens over several days and you can take it at its best. If it is for one evening, a smaller number of large fruit is easier to present.

Serving and storing Ratnagiri Alphonso

Keep firm fruit at room temperature in a single layer and check daily. Ripe fruit smells sweet at the stalk and gives slightly at the shoulder. Do not refrigerate firm mangoes. To cut, slice both cheeks off beside the stone, score a grid and fold the skin back. Raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, roughly 40% of the Daily Value; that is a generic mango figure, not an Alphonso-specific one. Our ripening guide and aamras recipe take it from there.
