Buy Alphonso mangoes online in GI-tagged delivery box with fresh hay packing

Alphonso is called the King of Mangoes for its rich, creamy, non-fibrous pulp and its aroma. You can buy Alphonso mangoes online from AlphonsoMango.in by the dozen, from Rs 1,849, in season from February to June. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027.

Why Alphonso is called the King of Mangoes

Ratnagiri Alphonso mango, the King of Mangoes, sold online by the dozen

The title is a reputation, not a certificate. Alphonso, called Hapus in Marathi, earned it on three counts: the pulp is rich, creamy and non-fibrous, the aroma fills a room before the box is open, and the fruit holds its character from the first bite to the last. Wikipedia describes Alphonso pulp exactly that way: rich, creamy and non-fibrous.

The name has a history. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic, so a named variety such as Alphonso is propagated by grafting, which is why a true Alphonso tree is always a grafted tree and never grown from seed.

We are Powle Home Foods, Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. First sales were offline in 2019 and online since 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. Our fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast.

Two listings carry our fresh Alphonso. The Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango comes from villages in Ratnagiri district. The Devgad Alphonso Mango comes from Devgad taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both are the same variety and both carry GI No. 139. We do not rank one above the other; the choice is habit and taste.

The GI tag and what it means when you buy

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139). We hold the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). The details are on our Brand Facts page. The tag applies to Alphonso only; it says where the fruit grew, not how sweet a particular box will be.

For a buyer, the practical use of the GI tag is simple. Ask any seller which district the fruit came from and whether they can show a GI Authorised User number. A seller who cannot answer either question is asking you to take the word Hapus on trust. Our guide to the Alphonso mango GI tag goes deeper.

How the King of Mangoes is harvested and ripened

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so each mango is lifted from the tree rather than shaken to the ground. Harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, for all our Alphonso. Bruised fruit ripens unevenly, which is why the harvest method matters more than it sounds.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide use for ripening is prohibited by FSSAI under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days. A box will usually arrive with fruit at slightly different stages, and the last step happens in your home. Keep firm fruit at room temperature, away from the fridge, and check it daily. Our ripening guide covers the details.

Season, and what to do outside it

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season, so the fresh listings show as unavailable until then.

Between seasons the Alphonso Mango Pulp tin is available all year in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590. Mango pulp is sterilised and packed in hermetically sealed cans, which is why it keeps. It is the honest way to have Alphonso in November; a fresh Hapus sold in November is not what it claims to be.

A simple aamras recipe works with either fresh fruit or the tin.
