Both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are GI-tagged under GI No. 139. We source from 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. Every fruit is weighed, graded and AI/ML-scanned before it leaves the packhouse. Nothing is carbide-ripened.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is flavour profile and Brix position. Devgad fruit tends toward the higher end of the 18–24° Brix range; Ratnagiri delivers a slightly more floral note. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad.

Delivery to Mumbai

Fruit travels from our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse to the Mumbai packhouse by air-conditioned vehicle — about 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, we dispatch by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

We dispatch fruit at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery. If your box arrives damaged in transit, photograph the fruit and packaging and send it to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We either dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

One honest limit: we do not sell fresh Alphonso mangoes from July to January. The season ends in June and no stock is held in cold storage to sell off-season.

Where the Fruit Actually Comes From

We work with 100+ partner farmer families across 48 villages in Ratnagiri and Devgad. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. Villages in Devgad taluka include Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye and Kunkeshwar, among others. Ratnagiri taluka sourcing includes Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange and Mirya.

Prashant Powle — founder and GI Authorised User — built this network village by village from 2017. He was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the weather pressures affecting Alphonso yields that season. Every farmer follows strict SOPs covering natural sprays and fertilisers from flowering to harvest.

Harvest is by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For taller trees we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. The 48–72 hours from harvest to dispatch covers: roughly 2 hours from tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling and hot-water treatment, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned transport to Mumbai, then 24–48 hours of natural ripening on hay.

What does GI No. 139 actually mean for a Mumbai buyer?

GI No. 139 is the Geographical Indication for Alphonso mango covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. AlphonsoMango.in holds GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019, under Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260. That certificate is the legal basis for calling the fruit GI-tagged Hapus. Buying from an Authorised User is the only way to be certain the label is not self-declared.

How We Ripen and Pack

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at our Mumbai packhouse is monitored hay-ripening — not gas-triggered. This is not a marketing phrase; it is how Konkan farmers have ripened Hapus for generations.

Each fruit goes into a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm matched to fruit size). The sleeve prevents side bruising, skin friction scars (Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed), stem punctures from neighbouring fruit, latex cross-contamination and condensation that can trigger anthracnose. The diamond mesh keeps airflow so condensation evaporates.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) top-and-bottom courier-grade unit with a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure instead of the fruit. Six air holes top and bottom allow airflow during ripening after delivery.

Every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned — AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues (including spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. Carbide and pesticide-residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 panel (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) showed all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg — was detected, well within the Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg.

Season and Availability

When is Alphonso mango season in Mumbai?

The season runs February to June, with peak availability in March, April and May. By late June, supply falls sharply. We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January — no cold-store stock, no off-season blending. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Why does availability vary week to week?

Alphonso trees alternate-bear: a heavy crop year often follows a lighter one. Within a season, an unseasonal rain event or a hot dry spell in Konkan can shift harvest timing by two to three weeks. The June 2026 Economic Times piece — in which Prashant Powle was quoted — described exactly this kind of weather pressure on yields. We source across 48 villages specifically to reduce that concentration risk: when one micro-climate underperforms, another often compensates.

Alphonso Mango Desserts in Mumbai

Alphonso mango desserts Mumbai — kulfi, amrakhand and mango modak made with Hapus

Mumbai's dessert culture is built around Alphonso. Three classics that rely on fruit with 18–24° Brix — anything lower and the result is flat.

Mango Kulfi

Kulfi is denser than ice cream because it is not churned. Full-fat milk is reduced over heat, then blended with Alphonso pulp and a pinch of saffron. The saffron note in the Hapus itself — particularly present in Devgad fruit at peak Brix — means you need far less sugar than a recipe written for a generic mango.

Amrakhand with Hapus

Shrikhand strained overnight, folded with Alphonso pulp, a strand or two of saffron, and cardamom. The pulp should come from fully ripe fruit — 22–24° Brix gives you the depth that makes Amrakhand different from flavoured yoghurt. Ratnagiri fruit's floral character comes through clearly in this preparation.

Mango Modak

A Ganesh Chaturthi staple in Mumbai, now eaten through the Alphonso season. The filling is Alphonso pulp reduced until almost jammy, mixed with grated coconut and jaggery. The rice-flour shell is steamed. The fruit's natural acidity — present even at 24° Brix — cuts through the coconut fat and keeps the modak from feeling heavy.

All three desserts work better with fruit dispatched at the right ripeness stage. Ours leaves the packhouse at 70–80% ripeness and is fully ripe within three days of delivery — the timing aligns well with most home-kitchen prep schedules.

People Also Ask

What is the price of 1 kg of Alphonso mango in India?

GI-tagged Alphonso mango is sold by the box, not by the kilogram, because individual fruit weight and grade matter more than bulk weight. On alphonsomango.in, boxes cost ₹1,849 to ₹5,399 for Ratnagiri and ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 for Devgad, depending on grade — during the February-to-June season.

If you divide box price by fruit count, per-fruit cost varies by grade from Small (150–180 g) to Jumbo (275–300 g).

Which city is famous for Alphonso Mango in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad — both coastal towns in Maharashtra's Konkan belt — are the origin cities for genuine Hapus. GI No. 139 legally covers these two districts, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Mumbai is the main commercial hub where Alphonso is graded, ripened and dispatched to customers across India and for export.

Proashant Powle sources from 48 villages across both districts, bringing fruit to a Mumbai packhouse before dispatch.

Which mango is famous in Mumbai?

Alphonso — called Hapus in Marathi — is the mango Mumbai identifies with most strongly. GI No. 139 covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg fruit, and Mumbai has historically been the city where Konkan farmers brought their best Hapus to sell. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai buyers lean toward Devgad Alphonso for its rich, deep sweetness.

Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range, which Mumbai buyers seem to prefer season after season.

Are Alphonso mangoes Indian?

Yes, Alphonso mangoes are entirely Indian in origin. They grow in the Konkan coastal districts of Maharashtra — Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg — and hold Geographical Indication tag GI No. 139 under Indian law. The GI tag means only fruit from these districts can legally be sold as Alphonso or Hapus. No other country grows or certifies this variety.

The name traces to Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese colonial figure, but the mango itself was bred and perfected over centuries by Konkan farmers.
