Buy Alphonso mango in Belgaum

Belgaum, spelled Belagavi in official records, sits at the northern edge of Karnataka, next to the Maharashtra border. The Konkan coast, where Alphonso grows, lies just across the Western Ghats from you. That closeness makes people in Belagavi fussy about Hapus, and it is why so many of them search for the fruit by its Marathi name rather than by the English one.

Ratnagiri or Devgad: what to order in Belgaum

Ratnagiri is a district and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both grow the same variety, Alphonso, also called Hapus or Aapus. We do not rank one above the other. Pick by fruit size and budget, not by place name.

Delivery to Belgaum

We dispatch by Blue Dart. About 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery, and we do not promise a fixed day for any single town. The way to know is simple: type your PIN code at checkout. The checkout tells you straight away if we can deliver to yours.

When the box reaches you, open it as soon as it arrives. Look at each fruit, set aside any that look damaged and report damage within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in. Fruit usually arrives mature but still firm, because it finishes softening at your home. A firm mango is not a bad mango; firmness is how Alphonso travels well, and the sweetness builds over the following days. Eat the softest fruits first and keep the rest spread out so they do not all ripen together.

If you are ordering for someone in Belagavi from another city, enter their address and PIN code at checkout, not yours. Families in Belagavi often order for relatives in other cities, or for a house full of guests, so two or three dozens in one order is common; choose the quantity at the product page and check the PIN code for each address. Our guide to mango delivery in Karnataka covers other towns in the state.

Where the fruit comes from

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139). We hold the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so each fruit is cut and caught rather than shaken down.

Konkan is the stretch of the west coast between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau. Mango varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting, because Indian-group mangoes are monoembryonic and do not come true from seed. That is why every tree in a good grove is a graft chosen for its fruit.

You can read our licence and certificate details on the Brand Facts page. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

How to ripen Alphonso at home in Belgaum

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days, so the fruit you receive may need a few more days at home.

  1. Unpack and sort. Lay the fruit in a single layer on newspaper or a cotton cloth in a shaded room.
  2. Keep it at room temperature. Do not put firm fruit in the fridge, because cold slows ripening and dulls the flavour.
  3. Check the stalk end. A sweet smell near the stalk and slight give under a gentle press mean the fruit is ready.
  4. Chill only when soft. Ripe fruit can go in the fridge for a short while before you cut it.

Our longer guide on ripening Alphonso at home gives the stages in detail.

What to ask any seller before you pay

Belagavi has local fruit markets, and good fruit can be found there. These questions work wherever you buy:

  • Which variety is it, and which place did it grow in?
  • How was it ripened? Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011.
  • Does the seller hold a food licence, and for Alphonso, a GI Authorised User certificate?
  • What happens if a box arrives damaged?

The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof. Skin colour alone cannot show how a fruit was ripened either. Asking for paperwork is a better check than any home test.

Season and what to do outside it

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season, because the trees give one crop a year. The Alphonso mango pulp tin is available all year if you want aamras or a milkshake before the fruit returns. Our aamras recipe and mango lassi recipe show two easy ways to use it. For the months in detail, read the mango season guide.
