Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is in soil, microclimate and — for most Hyderabad customers who've ordered more than once — personal preference. Devgad fruit tends toward higher Brix and a rounder shoulder; Ratnagiri fruit is often slightly firmer at dispatch and travels marginally better over 900 km to Hyderabad. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri and coastal buyers lean Devgad. Hyderabad splits roughly even.

Delivery to Hyderabad

Fresh Alphonso mangoes delivered online to Hyderabad — from AlphonsoMango.in

Fruit leaves our Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. From tree to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse takes roughly two hours. An air-conditioned vehicle then runs the 10–12 hour leg to Mumbai, where the mangoes spend 24–48 hours on a natural hay bed finishing their ripening. Dispatch follows immediately after grading.

Hyderabad is 600–650 km from Mumbai by road. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. Allow up to three days for outlying areas in Rangareddy or Medchal districts.

The fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for transit. It will finish ripening on your counter within about three days of delivery. If you receive a box with damage, photograph it and contact us within 24 hours. We replace 100% of damaged fruit with photo evidence.

We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July through January. If you land on this page outside the season window, the product pages will show as out of stock — that is correct, not a site error.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade: Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849 to ₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849 to ₹5,499) on the product page. Small grade is 150–180 g per fruit; Medium 180–225 g; Extra Large 250–275 g; Jumbo 275–300 g. Pick the box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen.
  2. Add to cart and check out: Enter your Hyderabad delivery address. The site will confirm serviceability at your pin code before you pay.
  3. We dispatch: Your order goes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Hyderabad addresses within 1–3 days of dispatch.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mango Hyderabad — shop online for a real Konkan treat from AlphonsoMango.in

Prashant Powle founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017. Powle Home Foods was registered in July 2019 and the first full commercial season ran in 2020. The sourcing network now spans 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad — from Pawas and Golap in Ratnagiri taluka to Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar on the Sindhudurg coast.

Every orchard in the network is sea-facing. Most trees are 12–25 years old. Prashant selects orchards on three criteria: Brix consistency across multiple harvests, tree longevity and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years. Younger orchards that haven't stabilised their sugar profile don't make the cut, regardless of location.

How the fruit is harvested

No tree is shaken. Every mango is hand-cut using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. For tall trees, our network uses an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera attachment. Fruit that falls is not packed. This matters for Hyderabad customers: a bruised shoulder shows up as a brown patch within 24 hours of ripening, and a fallen mango will bruise before it leaves the orchard.

Grading and scanning

Every fruit is weighed and sorted by grade. Before packing, AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal defects — including early spongy tissue — and external surface issues. A fruit that passes visual inspection but carries internal damage will still fail the scan. We reject it.

Ripening: What We Do and What We Don't

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored hay ripening — not gas-triggered.

Calcium carbide is banned for food use in India under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations. The problem for Hyderabad buyers in local markets is there is no reliable way to verify how street-market Alphonso was ripened. With us, the process is the same box after box: harvest, cool, transport under refrigeration to Mumbai, hay bed, scan, pack, dispatch.

We test residues weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 panel (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The same serving also carries mangiferin, a xanthone studied for anti-inflammatory activity by Govindappa et al. in 2011 (cell study — not a clinical trial).

For babies from about six months, Alphonso pulp is a natural first fruit — the fibre-free texture and mild acidity make it easier to digest than many commercial baby foods. Keep it as a serving suggestion and check with your paediatrician for quantities.

Season and Availability

Season runs February to June. Peak supply — when the widest grades are available and Brix is highest — is March through May. We dispatch no fresh Alphonso from July through January. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Ratnagiri won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level award for the Alphonso variety, not a brand award. We mention it because it confirms what Hyderabad customers have known for years: this is not an ordinary mango.

Which mango is famous in Hyderabad?

Hyderabad has long favoured Banganapalli (also called Benishan) as its local staple — it grows close by in Andhra Pradesh and arrives in bulk through April and May. Can I buy Alphonso mangoes in the USA?

Yes. GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes are exported to the US, though USDA phytosanitary rules require irradiation treatment before entry — this is standard for all Indian mango exports to America. You can order through Indian exporters who hold APEDA registration and comply with USDA import protocols. alphonsomango.in exports to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan.

If you are in the US and want to order, check the export product listings on the site during the February-to-June season.

What are Alphonso mangoes called in Telugu?

In Telugu, Alphonso mango is most commonly called Hapoos (హాపూస్), a direct phonetic borrowing from the Marathi name Hapus. Some Telugu speakers also use the term Alphonso directly. The fruit is not native to Andhra or Telangana — it comes from Konkan, so there is no separate regional Telugu name for the variety.

Hyderabad fruit shops that stock Konkan Alphonso typically label it Hapoos or Alphonso on their boards.
