Ratnagiri vs Devgad — Which Grade Suits You?

Buyers often ask us to choose between the two GI belts. Here is what the grading table actually shows. Devgad fruit — from villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar — tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Ratnagiri fruit from Pawas and Golap is typically a touch lighter in Brix but still well within the same band. Both carry GI No. 139.

Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows a clear pattern: north India buyers lean toward Ratnagiri, Mumbai buyers lean toward Devgad. We do not know exactly why — it may be familiarity, or it may be that Devgad's slightly higher Brix suits the palate already used to sweeter local fruit. We just report what we observe.

Delivery Across India

Every box travels from the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse to our Mumbai packhouse by air-conditioned vehicle — about 10–12 hours. Fruit spends 24–48 hours on a natural hay bed there, reaching 70–80% ripeness, then goes out for dispatch. Total time from harvest to dispatch: 48–72 hours.

We dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) carton, 130 gsm paper, with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve — flat width 50–55 mm — to prevent lenticel bruising and latex cross-contamination. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going so condensation evaporates rather than triggering anthracnose.

If transit damages the fruit, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We either dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Mango suppliers sourcing Alphonso Hapus from Konkan orchards in Ratnagiri and Devgad Maharashtra

Prashant Powle and the team at Powle Home Foods source from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. On the Ratnagiri side, key sourcing villages include Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange and Mirya. In Devgad taluka, Sindhudurg, we work with orchards in Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav and Waghotan, among others.

Our 100+ partner farmer families run orchards that are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected for Brix consistency and proper alternate-bearing management. Every orchard follows cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest. We do not buy from traders or aggregators — the chain runs from named orchards to our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point, then to Mumbai.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

At full ripeness, Devgad Alphonso registers 18–24° Brix. Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of that band. We measure Brix across the season to manage dispatch timing — fruit leaves at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for transit, and reaches full sweetness within about three days of delivery.

Are these mangoes carbide-free?

Yes. We use natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No calcium carbide, no ethylene chambers, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (NABL accredited, Thane, certificate TC-8284) tests for pesticide residues weekly through the season — all 28 residues in the April 2025 panel (report 01/ETHAP2500044) were within Codex maximum residue limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free," because one residue, thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg, was detected within limits.

How We Ripen the Fruit

The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is not passive storage. Each lot is laid on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms, monitored for evenness of ripening. The hay keeps fruit separated and cushioned. Nothing is gas-triggered. This is the same Aadi method Konkan growers have used for generations — we have simply added temperature control and monitoring discipline.

After harvest, fruit goes through a hot-water treatment to reduce surface fungal issues and extend shelf life. It then cools at the packhouse before the air-conditioned overnight run to Mumbai. Every mango is also weighed, graded, and scanned by an AI/ML-assisted machine that checks for internal spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. Fruit that fails the scan does not ship.

How to Verify a Genuine GI Mango Supplier

Authentic Hapus mango suppliers with GI tag certification from Ratnagiri and Devgad Konkan

GI No. 139 for Alphonso covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. An authorised user must hold a certificate from the GI Registry. Ours is GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019, Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260. Ask any supplier for these specifics — a certificate number, an issue date, the GI number. Generic claims of "GI tagged" without a user number mean nothing legally.

Beyond certification, look for FSSAI registration (ours: 10020022011783) and APEDA registration for export (ours: 225579). Exporters who ship to US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan face tighter residue scrutiny than domestic sellers — that external accountability shapes how carefully we source and test.

Is Ratnagiri Alphonso better than Devgad Alphonso?

Neither is categorically better. They carry the same GI tag, the same Brix range, the same weight grades. The flavour profile differs slightly — Devgad tends to be sweeter at the upper Brix end, Ratnagiri slightly more aromatic. Our customer data (47,000+ orders) shows it largely comes down to familiarity: north India buyers reach for Ratnagiri, Mumbai buyers for Devgad.

Season and Availability

Fresh Alphonso is available February to June, with peak supply March to May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January — the trees do not produce, and we do not substitute cold-store or imported fruit. Kesar runs April to June from the Gir region.

The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

The 2026 season, as Prashant Powle told The Economic Times in June 2026, was one of the most difficult in recent memory — weather stress and yield pressure affected the entire Konkan belt. That context matters if you are comparing prices year to year.

Can I buy Alphonso mango in bulk or for corporate gifting?

Yes. HoReCa and corporate orders start from 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg). We have handled multi-destination corporate dispatches across India — including a May 2026 dispatch for a large exhibition organiser. Typical corporate orders run 1–2 dozen boxes and above. People Also Ask

Who is the largest producer of mangos?

India produces more mangoes than any other country, accounting for roughly 40–45% of global output each year. Uttar Pradesh leads domestic production by volume, but the Konkan coast — Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra — produces the Alphonso variety widely regarded as India's finest export-grade mango.

GI-tagged Alphonso from these two districts is what we source and dispatch directly to your door, from harvest to delivery in 48–72 hours.

Where does the US get most of its mangos?

Mexico supplies the largest share of mangoes imported into the United States, followed by Peru, Brazil, Ecuador and Haiti depending on the season. Indian Alphonso mangoes do reach the US — they are exported under APEDA oversight and must pass USDA phytosanitary protocols including irradiation or heat treatment before entry.

We export Alphonso to the US under APEDA registration 225579, operated by Powle Home Foods.

Where is the best place to buy mangoes?

The best place to buy mangoes depends on whether you want GI-verified, carbide-free fruit or generic market produce. A GI-authorised D2C supplier ships directly from the orchard district, so the chain — Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse to Mumbai to your door — is traceable and takes 48–72 hours from harvest to dispatch.

You can order Ratnagiri Alphonso directly at alphonsomango.in/products/ratnagiri-alphonso-mango.

Where does Walmart get their mangoes?

Walmart sources mangoes primarily from Mexico, Peru and Ecuador for its US stores, working through large-scale commodity importers and produce distributors. Their supply chain is built for volume and year-round availability, not variety-specific or GI-verified sourcing, which is structurally different from a single-origin Alphonso supplier.

GI-tagged Alphonso like ours — sourced from 48 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg — is a specialty fruit with a six-week peak window, not a commodity line.
