Hapus mango in Pune: the name and the fruit

Hapus is the Marathi name for Alphonso, and in Pune it is the only name most households use. The fruit is the Alphonso of the Konkan coast, grown in Ratnagiri district and in Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district, and Alphonso from that belt is GI-tagged under GI No. 139. Pune sits on the Deccan side of the Western Ghats; Konkan is the coastal strip between the Arabian Sea and that plateau, so the fruit crosses the Ghats to reach the city.

Our fruit comes from across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). This page is for Pune buyers: which Hapus to order, what it costs, how delivery to Pune works, and how to ripen it in Pune's drier air. For the broader city picture see Alphonso mango in Pune.

Ratnagiri or Devgad Hapus for Pune

Pune families argue about this every April, and we will not settle it for them. Both are the same variety, Alphonso, under the same GI, and we sell both from Rs 1,849 per dozen with the same grade bands. Ratnagiri is a district; Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. We do not claim that one is sweeter or earlier. Buy the name you grew up with, or buy one dozen of each and decide at the table.

Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, and the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. The smallest grade gives the same flavour in more pieces and suits aamras; the larger grades are the ones Pune buyers pick for gifting. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus guide goes deeper without picking a winner.

Hapus mango rate in Pune: what to compare

Pune buyers compare our dozen price with what the fruit sellers in their own area quote, and that is sensible, as long as the comparison is like for like. Ask the local seller the count, the fruit weight and how the fruit was ripened; then compare with a dozen of the same grade on our product page. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. We do not quote a per-kg rate, because Hapus is traded by the dozen and a kilo can be four large or six small fruit.

What sits inside our dozen price: hand harvesting with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, grading by weight, natural ripening and the courier box. Prices change with grade and through the season, so check the product page for today's price. Our Ratnagiri Hapus price in Pune page and Alphonso mango rate in Pune cover the rate question in detail.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011; we are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Whoever you buy from in Pune, ask how the fruit was ripened and whether they hold an Authorised User certificate under GI No. 139. Colour, aroma and the bucket-of-water test are rough clues, not proof.

Ripening Hapus in Pune's weather, and the season

Pune is drier than the coast, and its nights in February and March are usually cooler than Mumbai's. Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, and a box reaches Pune with some fruit ready and some firm. In a cool, dry room the firm fruit takes a little longer than it would in Mumbai's humidity, so keep the mangoes in one layer at room temperature, on hay or in a paper bag, away from the window and the fan, and check every day. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give mean ripe. Do not refrigerate firm fruit. The full method is in how to ripen Alphonso mango.

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May; the 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Hapus in Pune or anywhere else. The Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) is available all year, and Pune's aamras habit does not have to wait for March; see aamras in Pune. In season we also list Kesar and Pairi, and Dasheri, Totapuri, Salem and Malgova on their own pages in the mango collection.
