Alphonso mango in Pune: Hapus, Amba and what the names mean

In Pune the same fruit goes by several names. Alphonso is the English name, Hapus is the Marathi name that Konkan growers use, and Hapus Amba is what some Pune families say at home. All of them mean the mango grown on the Konkan coast, beyond the Sahyadri hills to the west of the city. The fruit we send to Pune has travelled from that coast.

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. We started selling offline in 2019 and online in 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. This page focuses on what Pune buyers search for most: rates, sizes and how to tell what they are getting.

Hapus rate in Pune: how to read a price per dozen

Pune buyers usually ask for the dozen rate, and some ask for a peti price. We sell by the dozen, so you choose the fruit size and the number of dozens. Our Alphonso boxes start from Rs 1,849 per dozen, and the largest Ratnagiri option goes up to Rs 5,399. We do not publish market rates, because rates at the Market Yard and in shops move with the day and the grade. We also do not give a per-kilogram price. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.

What changes the price of a dozen
What you choose Effect on the price
Fruit size Alphonso fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g, and larger fruit costs more per dozen.
Number of dozens One dozen or more on the product page; the total rises with each dozen.
Origin page Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso both start from Rs 1,849 per dozen.
Season Fresh fruit is sold in season only; pulp tins start from Rs 590 and are available all year.

Check the product page for today's price, because prices can change. When you compare us with a stall, compare dozen with dozen and ask for the count and the size. Our Alphonso mango rate in Pune article and our Ratnagiri Hapus price in Pune guide show how to do that comparison.

Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso for a Pune family

Original Devgad Alphonso Mango export quality Devgad Hapus for Pune delivery

Both are the same variety. Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. We do not say that one is sweeter or ripens earlier, and we do not rank them. Pune households often order a dozen of each and decide by taste.

Ratnagiri and Devgad fruit are both GI-certified Alphonso. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), and the registry record for the Devgad application is listed in our sources below. If you are choosing between the two for a gift, the product pages show the box sizes and the starting prices side by side.

How to check that your Hapus is genuine

In season Pune has Hapus from many routes, and it is fair to ask every seller the same questions. A seller who answers plainly is easier to trust than one who relies on a label.

Alphonso mangoes sourced from Konkan villages for delivery to Pune
  1. Which district did it grow in? Ratnagiri or Devgad is a clear answer. "Konkan" or "Hapus" alone is not.
  2. Who holds the GI papers? Ask for the authorised user number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), listed on our Brand Facts page.
  3. How was it ripened? Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.
  4. How many fruits, and what size? A dozen is 12 fruits.

A bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof, and no home test shows how a mango was ripened. Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus mango lists more clues.

  • Open the box on arrival and look at the fruit.
  • If anything is damaged, report it to us within 24 hours of delivery.
  • Let firm fruit ripen at room temperature, away from direct sun, and keep only ripe or cut fruit in the fridge.

Wikipedia notes that Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening, so a box may need several days at home. Our guide to ripening at home covers the stages. For other mango varieties in Pune, see our best mangoes in Pune article.
