Buying Alphonso mangoes in Pune
Pune sits about 149 km from Mumbai by road, on a plateau roughly 560 metres above sea level, and it does not grow Alphonso itself. The fruit comes from the Konkan coast, mostly the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and reaches Pune through market yards, fruit shops, apartment-society sales and online sellers. Each route works. What changes is how much you can check before you pay.
At a market stall you can see and smell the fruit, but you usually cannot learn where it was grown or how it was ripened. When you buy online you cannot touch it first, so the seller's details matter more. We are Powle Home Foods, a Mumbai business run by Prashant Powle, and we source fruit across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. We have sold mangoes offline since 2019 and online since 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.
Two products cover most Pune orders. The Ratnagiri Alphonso page and the Devgad Alphonso page both sell Alphonso by the dozen in several grades. They are the same variety, so pick on the fruit size and the budget you want, not on a rumour about origin. If you also want to compare with local shops, our guide to best mangoes in Pune lists what to look for.
How Alphonso rates are quoted in Pune
If you searched for the Hapus mango rate in Pune, the first thing to know is that rates are quoted in different units. A market trader may quote per dozen, per peti or per piece. An online seller usually quotes per dozen or per box. A dozen can weigh anywhere from roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on the grade, so two sellers with the same price per dozen can be selling very different amounts of fruit.
We price by the dozen and show "from" prices, because the final figure depends on the grade you pick. Check the product page for the current price before you order.
| Product | Price | When |
|---|---|---|
| Ratnagiri Alphonso | From Rs 1,849 per dozen, up to Rs 5,399 for the largest option | Fresh season |
| Devgad Alphonso | From Rs 1,849 per dozen | Fresh season |
| Kesar mango | From Rs 999 per box | Fresh season |
| Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin | 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590 | All year |
When you compare any two quotes, ask three questions. What does one unit weigh? Which grade is it? And how was the fruit ripened? Those three answers explain most of the gap between a low rate and a high one.
Delivery to Pune
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Pune PIN codes differ, so enter yours at checkout to see what applies to your address. We do not promise a fixed number of days for a city, because the courier's coverage is set by PIN code.
Because Alphonso is shipped slightly firm, a box that arrives in a day or two still has ripening to do. Open the box the day it arrives, lay the fruit in a single layer and read the ripening notes below. If something is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in or calling 8369048029. Our delivery period guide explains what affects transit time.
Checking for real Hapus
Pune has a lot of mango sellers in the season, and the name Hapus is used loosely. You do not need special equipment to ask good questions. Ask which district the fruit came from, whether the seller holds a GI Authorised User certificate, and how the fruit was ripened. A seller who can answer all three plainly is worth more than one who only quotes a low rate.
For our part, we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139) for Alphonso, and we list it on our Brand Facts page. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India, and the registry record for application 379 shows Devgad Alphonso merged with Alphonso Mango application 139.
Hay-ripened vs carbide-ripened mangoes: what differs
| Point | Naturally ripened on hay beds | Ripened with calcium carbide |
|---|---|---|
| Ripening medium | Mature fruit is laid on hay beds and ripens by itself over several days. | Calcium carbide produces acetylene gas, which is used to force ripening. |
| Legality in India | Allowed. | Prohibited. Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 bars selling fruit ripened with acetylene (carbide) gas. |
| Skin colour (rough clue, not proof) | Often uneven: green, gold and a blush can sit together on one fruit. | Colour alone cannot show how a fruit was ripened; an even bright yellow skin is only a rough clue. |
| Aroma (rough clue, not proof) | A sweet fruity smell, strongest near the stalk, builds as the fruit ripens. | Aroma can be weak when ripening is forced; this is a rough clue only. |
| Taste and health note | Sweet with a little acidity, soft flesh. | The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (PIB, 18 May 2024) lists dizziness, irritation, difficulty in swallowing and vomiting among effects linked to carbide residues. |
No home test, including the water or bucket test, proves how a mango was ripened. Colour, smell and the bucket test are only a rough clue, not proof. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Our guide on how to identify carbide-ripened mangoes covers the questions to ask.
Ripening in Pune's heat
Pune summers can touch 42 degrees Celsius, so fruit left in a warm room ripens quickly. Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days, and the box you receive is already part of the way there. Keep the fruit indoors in the shade, not on a sunny balcony and not in the fridge while it is firm.
- Smell the stalk end. A sweet, fruity smell means it is close.
- Press gently at the shoulder. A ripe fruit gives slightly.
- Do not judge by colour alone. Green, gold and a blush can sit together on a ripe Alphonso.
- Refrigerate only ripe fruit you cannot finish, and eat it soon.
Our how to ripen Alphonso at home page has the full method.
Season and off-season in Pune
Alphonso is harvested from about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and the Devgad and Ratnagiri pages will show their dozens as unavailable until then. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season.
For the rest of the year the Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin keeps the flavour available. It comes in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, and people use it for aamras, milkshakes and desserts. If you are searching for aamras in Pune because you want the dish at home, our note on aamras in Pune explains the options.
