Both carry GI No. 139. Both are ripened on hay. Neither touches calcium carbide or an ethylene chamber. The only difference is geography — and that geography changes the flavour in ways described below.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad Hapus: Which One?

Pune buyers split roughly along taste preference. Ratnagiri Hapus tends to arrive slightly more tart early in the season and mellows by May. Devgad fruit — from sea-facing orchards in Sindhudurg, places like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar — typically reads at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range at full ripeness. That extra sweetness is why Mumbai leans Devgad in our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers.

Attribute Ratnagiri Alphonso Devgad Alphonso
GI Tag No. 139 (AU/5974) No. 139 (AU/6932)
Season February – June February – June
Brix at full ripeness 18–24° 18–24° (typically upper end)
Fruit weight (by grade) 150–300 g 150–300 g
Price range ₹1,849 – ₹5,399 ₹1,849 – ₹5,499
Flavour profile Rich, aromatic, slight tartness early season Intensely sweet, honey-forward
Box options Half dozen, 1 dozen, 2 dozen Half dozen, 1 dozen, 2 dozen

Grade matters as much as origin. Jumbo (275–300 g) fruit commands the highest price. Small (150–180 g) fruit is cheaper per box but identical in flavour — useful if you want more pieces for aamras.

Delivery to Pune

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. Air-conditioned vehicles carry it to the Mumbai packhouse — roughly 10–12 hours. There it spends 24–48 hours on a hay bed in a temperature-controlled room, reaching 70–80% ripeness. Then it dispatches to Pune by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Transit to Pune is typically 1–2 days.

At delivery the fruit is firm. Leave it at room temperature for about three days and it reaches full ripeness. Do not refrigerate before it softens — cold halts the ripening that started on the hay bed at Mumbai.

If fruit arrives damaged, photograph it within 24 hours of delivery and contact us. We replace 100% — no argument, no return shipment required.

We do not deliver fresh Alphonso to Pune between July and January. The tree does not produce then, and we do not sell stored or cold-chain fruit from the previous season as fresh. That is the honest limit.

How to Order

  1. Select grade: Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499) and pick the weight grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo — that matches your use: whole fruit eating, aamras, or gifting.
  2. Add to cart: Pick your box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen — and complete checkout with your Pune delivery address.
  3. Dispatch: We dispatch by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code; most Pune addresses receive delivery within 1–3 days.

Where Hapus Mango Comes From

Hapus mango sourced from Konkan arriving in Pune — Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso

Hapus — the Marathi name for Alphonso — is legally protected under GI No. 139. Only fruit grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts can carry that tag. Powle Home Foods sources from 55 named villages across those two districts: Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mavalange in Ratnagiri taluka; Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Kunkeshwar and Mithbav in Devgad taluka; and Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda from the Malvan and Vengurla belt. The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, and managed by over 100 partner farmer families.

Prashant Powle — who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and formally registered Powle Home Foods in July 2019 — selects orchards on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. Trees that produce heavily one year and rest the next are carefully managed so the fruit quality does not drop in off-years. Each batch is AI/ML-assisted machine scanned before packing: every mango checked for spongy tissue internally and deformities externally, then weighed and graded.

The name Alphonso traces to Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese general who introduced grafting techniques to Konkan growers. Local Ratnagiri varieties were grafted and the resulting fruit was firm enough to travel — important when the Columbian Exchange was moving produce across oceans by sail.

How to Identify Authentic Hapus Mango in Pune

Authentic Hapus mango in Pune — saffron flesh, natural skin colour, GI Tagged

Genuine Hapus mango from Konkan has a few markers that carbide-ripened or misrepresented fruit cannot fake:

  • Skin colour is uneven — yellow with a natural green tinge or shoulder blush — not uniformly bright yellow (uniform colour often signals chemical treatment).
  • The stem end smells intensely floral before the fruit is fully soft. Carbide-ripened fruit smells flat or chemical at the stem.
  • Pulp is saffron-coloured, fibreless and separates cleanly from the seed.
  • Brix at full ripeness is 18–24°. Fruit ripened artificially rarely reaches the upper range of that window.

Our fruit is independently tested through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284; report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025). All 28 residues tested were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We state this plainly because the data supports the claim without exaggeration.

What does "GI Tagged Hapus" mean when you order online in Pune?

It means the seller holds an Authorised User licence from the GI Registry. Powle Home Foods holds two: AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Ratnagiri Alphonso and AU/6932 for Devgad Alphonso. GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 was issued 16 October 2019. A vendor without an AU number is selling fruit they cannot legally call GI-certified Hapus, regardless of what their packaging says.

Natural Ripening — What It Means for You

Every box from Powle Home Foods is hay-bed (Aadi) ripened — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay in a temperature-controlled room, monitored, not gas-triggered. This is not a marketing claim; it is what separates Konkan-practice ripening from the bulk trade.

Why does it matter to a Pune buyer? Carbide ripening forces colour and softness ahead of sugar development. The fruit looks ripe but tastes flat, and the interior can remain uneven — firm near the seed, mushy near the skin. Hay-bed ripening follows the fruit's own ethylene production, so colour, texture and Brix arrive together. You get the saffron pulp and 18–24° sweetness at the same time.

The fruit also goes through post-harvest hot-water treatment after harvest, which reduces surface issues and extends shelf life, and is cooled at the packhouse before the 10–12 hour air-conditioned road leg to Mumbai.

The Hapus Season in Pune

February to June. Peak is March to May. By late June, yield drops sharply and quality becomes inconsistent as monsoon approaches. We stop dispatching fresh Alphonso to Pune when the season ends — typically by end of June. July to January: no fresh Hapus available. This is not a logistics gap; it is the biology of the tree.

Early-season fruit (February–March) tends to be smaller and slightly more tart. Peak-season fruit (April–May) is heavier, sweeter and easier to find in all four grades. If you are ordering for a specific occasion — a wedding, a corporate gift run — ordering in April gives you the most reliable supply.

Hapus mango price in Pune — what drives the rate per dozen?

Grade (weight), origin (Ratnagiri or Devgad) and season timing drive the price. Jumbo-grade Devgad Alphonso at peak season costs more than Small-grade Ratnagiri early in February. Our prices run ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 depending on the combination you choose. Per-kg comparisons with local market fruit rarely account for grade, ripening method or GI provenance — which is why the price differential exists and is justified.

Storage After Delivery

Unripe fruit: keep at room temperature, out of direct sunlight, for two to three days. Do not refrigerate. Once fully soft — the skin yields gently under thumb pressure and the stem-end fragrance is strong — refrigerate and consume within two days. Cut fruit can be refrigerated in an airtight container for 24 hours without significant flavour loss.

Do not store unripe Hapus in a plastic bag. The foam-net sleeve each mango travels in can stay on until you are ready to ripen; the diamond mesh allows airflow and prevents condensation that triggers anthracnose (the black-spot surface mould that develops when moisture sits against Alphonso skin).

Nutrition in Plain Numbers

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol present in the flesh and skin, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). That is a cell study, not a clinical outcome — useful context, not a health claim.

The pulp is fibreless, saffron-coloured and contains no added sugar. Alphonso puree is considered suitable as a complementary food for babies from about 6 months — treat this as a serving suggestion, not medical advice.

People Also Ask

Which mango is best in Pune?

Hapus — the Marathi name for Alphonso — is the best mango for Pune buyers. Sourced from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg under GI No. 139, it reaches 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, has fibreless saffron pulp, and delivers to most Pune pin codes in 1–2 days during the March–June season.

What is the price of 1kg of Hapus mango?

Hapus mango is not typically sold by the kilogram — it is sold by the dozen or half dozen, graded by fruit weight. On alphonsomango.in, Ratnagiri Alphonso starts at ₹1,849 and Devgad Alphonso starts at ₹1,849, with price rising by grade up to ₹5,499 for Jumbo fruit in a two-dozen box.

Why is hapus mango expensive?

Hapus is expensive because the yield is naturally low, the season runs only from February to June, and every fruit requires careful hand harvesting, individual grading by weight, AI/ML scanning for internal defects, foam-net sleeving and temperature-controlled transport from Konkan to Pune. No shortcuts — no carbide, no ethylene — keep quality high and costs up.

Are Alphonso and Hapus Mango the same?

Yes. Hapus is the Marathi name for the Alphonso mango — same fruit, same GI No. 139, same Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg origin. The English name Alphonso traces to the Portuguese general Afonso de Albuquerque, whose grafting techniques shaped the variety in Konkan. Pune and Mumbai markets use Hapus; export markets and English menus use Alphonso.
