Customer trend North India leans Ratnagiri Mumbai leans Devgad

Prashant Powle sources from 55 named villages across both districts. Ratnagiri fruit comes from orchards in Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mirya, among others. Devgad fruit comes from Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav and Kunkeshwar, among others. Both carry the same GI number — the difference is geography and, in most seasons, Devgad's slightly higher sugar concentration at peak ripeness.

Delivery Across India

Every box leaves our Mumbai packhouse via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — the courier depends on your pin code. Metro cities typically receive fruit within 20–24 hours of dispatch. Most other Indian cities, including Aurangabad, receive orders within 1–3 days.

We dispatch fruit at 70–80% ripeness. It is firm enough to survive transit without bruising and reaches full ripeness within about three days of delivery. The 48–72-hour supply chain — from harvest in Ratnagiri or Devgad to dispatch from Mumbai — means what arrives is genuinely fresh, not cold-store stock.

Each fruit travels in a foam-net sleeve inside a 5-ply corrugated box with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the mangoes do not have to. Six air holes on the top and bottom keep airflow moving. The box itself is 3.5 kg or 4 kg, courier-grade, with reinforced corners.

We cover 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. If your Aurangabad pin code is not covered by one courier, a second carrier usually is. Check delivery details and transit times here.

One honest limitation: we do not ship fresh Alphonso between July and January. The tree does not bear fruit outside its natural season, and we will not substitute cold-store or chemically ripened fruit to fill that gap. If you are reading this outside March–June, the product pages will show out of stock — that is accurate, not an error.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 – Select grade. Open the Devgad Alphonso product page and choose your size grade — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — and your box quantity (half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen), with prices from ₹1,849 to ₹5,499.
  2. Step 2 – Add to cart. Confirm your delivery address and pin code at checkout; the site will assign the right courier for your location automatically.
  3. Step 3 – Dispatch. Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities within 1–3 days of dispatch.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mango Aurangabad Maharashtra – GI-tagged Hapus from Ratnagiri and Devgad

Alphonso mangoes grow along a narrow coastal strip in Konkan Maharashtra where laterite soil, sea breeze and the specific rain pattern of the Western Ghats combine to produce fruit with a Brix of 18–24°. Move the same variety 60 km inland and the character changes. That is why GI Tag No. 139 is geographically bounded to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — not to Maharashtra as a whole.

We source from 55 villages across those two districts. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon, Tambaldeg, Ilye and Munge, among others. We also source from Malvan and Vengurla talukas, including Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda.

Over 100 partner farmer families grow on orchards typically 12–25 years old. Prashant Powle selects partner orchards on Brix consistency, tree longevity and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years — a single-season relationship with a farmer who forces yield in off years is not something we pursue.

How the Fruit Is Harvested

Every mango is hand-picked using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera guides the harvest. Fruit that falls to the ground is not packed — the latex splash and bruise impact from even a short drop is enough to cause problems three days later at your door.

How to Identify Authentic GI-Tagged Alphonso

Alphonso mangoes in Aurangabad – authentic GI-tagged Hapus from Konkan

The GI system for Alphonso is specific: GI No. 139 covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. An Authorised User number on the box — ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 — means the seller has been verified by the GI Registry and holds Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019. Without that, the box may say "Alphonso" but the fruit could be from anywhere.

What Is Spongy Tissue and Why Does It Matter?

Spongy tissue is an internal disorder where parts of the pulp stay starchy and off-flavoured even after the skin yellows. A fruit with spongy tissue looks ripe outside and is not. We run AI/ML-assisted machine scanning on every mango before packing to check for this and for external deformities. It is not a visual check — it uses non-destructive sensing to flag affected fruit before it reaches your box.

Why "Carbide-Free" Matters for Aurangabad Buyers

Markets in inland Maharashtra cities often receive Alphonso-labelled fruit ripened with calcium carbide — a chemical agent that yellows the skin quickly without developing the natural sugars. The pulp stays flat, fibrous and odourless compared to natural ripeness. Our fruit is ripened exclusively on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse over 24–48 hours. No ethylene chambers, no carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind.

Independently tested by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284, report 01/ETHAP2500044 issued 5 April 2025): all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg.

Ripening and Handling

The 48–72-hour journey from tree to your door works like this: fruit is harvested in the morning in Ratnagiri or Devgad, reaches our packhouse within about two hours, goes through post-harvest cooling and a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues, then travels 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai. At Mumbai, it rests on hay beds for 24–48 hours — this is the ripening stage, natural and monitored. Then it is graded, sleeved in foam nets, packed and dispatched.

We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness. The fruit completes ripening at room temperature over about three days after delivery. If you want to slow that down, keep it in a cool, ventilated spot — not in the refrigerator before it is ripe, which dulls the aroma.

Other Names for Alphonso Mangoes

Hapus (हापूस) is the Konkan name most buyers in Maharashtra will recognise. The fruit is also called Aapoos in some coastal dialects, and Badami in Karnataka. In export markets — the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan — it ships as Alphonso. Whatever name you use when searching, GI No. 139 is the legal identifier of the authentic variety from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a compound found in the fruit, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). These are fruit nutrition facts, not medical claims.

Alphonso pulp is also used as a first food for babies from around 6 months — the natural sweetness and smooth texture suit it well. Keep that as a serving suggestion and check with your paediatrician for your child's specific situation.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak availability in March, April and May. Devgad fruit extends slightly later into June compared to Ratnagiri. Outside this window — July through January — we do not sell fresh Alphonso. The product pages will show out of stock. That is not a site error.

46% of our 47,000+ customers reorder. The average is 2.8 boxes per customer per season. The most common pattern we see: one box in April to taste the season's fruit, a second in May for guests, and a third — often a Devgad box — as a late-season send-off before June ends.

For everything else the season produces — read our Alphonso mango season guide for harvest timing, grade availability and what to expect week by week.

People Also Ask

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

Alphonso mango is typically sold by the dozen, not by the kilogram, so a per-kg price is not standard. On alphonsomango.in, a box of Devgad Alphonso starts at ₹1,849 for a half dozen and goes up to ₹5,499 for two dozen, depending on the grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo.

If you need a rough per-kg figure, a Medium-grade dozen weighs around 2–2.5 kg, so you can work backwards from the box price once you select your grade at checkout.

Which city is famous for Alphonso Mango in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad, both in coastal Maharashtra's Konkan belt, are the two towns most closely tied to Alphonso mango. GI Tag No. 139 is geographically bounded to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Mumbai is the main trade hub where the fruit is graded, ripened and dispatched nationwide, but the growing belt is the Konkan coast — not any inland city.

Aurangabad does not grow Alphonso, but you can order GI-tagged Hapus online and receive it within 1–3 days.

Is Alphonso mango grown in Maharashtra?

Yes, but only in a narrow coastal strip. GI Tag No. 139 covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts along the Konkan coast. The combination of laterite soil, sea breeze and the Western Ghats' specific rainfall pattern produces Alphonso with Brix of 18–24°. Move the same variety 60 km inland and the fruit's character changes noticeably.

Aurangabad, Pune and Nashik are outside this GI zone — Alphonso grown there does not qualify for the GI tag.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

GI-tagged Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad, sourced within the coastal Konkan belt of Maharashtra, is widely regarded as the best in India. Both carry GI No. 139. Devgad fruit typically reaches the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range at peak ripeness, while Ratnagiri fruit is brighter and more citrus-forward.

If you are ordering online to Aurangabad, both origins ship from our Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest, reaching you in 1–3 days via temperature-controlled transit.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on weather, yield and the pressures facing GI-certified Alphonso growers and traders ('Famous Alphonso mango is facing existential crisis this year').
