Alphonso mango in Amravati: Hapus from the Konkan

Alphonso mango box from Ratnagiri and Devgad for delivery to Amravati

Amravati is in Vidarbha, in eastern Maharashtra. The Hapus that Maharashtra is proud of grows in the Konkan, on the western coast of the same state, between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau. Two parts of one state, then, but the fruit still has to travel, and buyers in Amravati who want genuine Alphonso need to know where it was grown and how it was ripened.

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. Alphonso from this belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139), and we hold the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). We started selling offline in 2019 and online in 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.

How the fruit is picked, ripened and packed

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so each mango is lifted off the tree and not shaken down. Harvest is at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, for all our Alphonso. Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening, and the hay-bed stage is part of that time.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and our licence details are on the Brand Facts page.

Natural ripening means you should expect a few days of waiting at home. Fruit that arrives firm is normal. Keep it in a single layer at room temperature, away from direct sun, and let the aroma tell you when it is ready.

Ratnagiri or Devgad: choosing for Amravati

Both are Alphonso. Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. We do not rank one above the other, and we do not say that one is sweeter or earlier. The difference is the address of the orchard. If you cannot decide, this table shows how we would think about it.

Price, fruit size and box weight

An Alphonso fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g. A dozen therefore weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, and the price follows the grade. Our boxes start from Rs 1,849 per dozen and go up to Rs 5,399 for the largest Ratnagiri option. Check the product page for the current price, as it can change.

  • Smaller grades: good for aamras, milkshakes and cutting for the family.
  • Larger grades: fewer fruits per kilogram, and a better look if the box is a gift.
  • Counting: a dozen is always twelve fruits, so ask any seller for the count as well as the weight.

We do not quote a price per kilogram. If a market seller in Amravati quotes by weight, compare the fruit size and count before you compare the rupee figure.

Ordering to Amravati, step by step

  1. Choose the product. Pick Ratnagiri or Devgad and the size of the dozen.
  2. Enter your Amravati address and PIN code at checkout. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout.
  3. Wait for the Blue Dart delivery. We do not promise a delivery day for any named city.
  4. Check the box on arrival. If anything is damaged, report it to us within 24 hours of delivery.

Before you order, keep three things ready: your full Amravati address, the PIN code, and a phone number the courier can call. Decide the number of dozens first, because the size and the count change the price. If you are buying for a family function or a gift, write to us with the quantity and the date, and we will tell you what is possible.

Why Alphonso is also called Hapus

The Alphonso variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. In Marathi the fruit is Hapus, and in Gujarati it is Hafus. Mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic, so named varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting. That is why one Alphonso tree gives fruit true to its name and a seed planted at random may not.

The English word mango comes from the Portuguese manga, which came from Malayalam. The mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines. Our guide to the origin of the Alphonso mango tells the story in full.

Season dates and the off-season option

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Where can I buy Alphonso mango in Amravati?

Is Hapus the same as Alphonso mango?

Yes. Hapus is the Marathi name for the Alphonso mango, and Hapus aam means Alphonso mango. The variety grows on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, mainly around Ratnagiri and Devgad. Alphonso from that belt is the fruit we sell, and the sourcing details are on our Brand Facts page.

What is the price of Alphonso mango in Amravati?

Our Alphonso boxes start from Rs 1,849 per dozen and go up to Rs 5,399 for the largest Ratnagiri option, depending on fruit size. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. We sell by the dozen and do not quote a per-kilogram price. Check the product page for the current price.

How do I know my Alphonso mango is naturally ripened?

Ask the seller how the fruit was ripened, because carbide ripening is prohibited in India. We do not use carbide, and our mangoes are ripened on hay beds. Colour and a water test are only rough clues, not proof, so a plain answer from the seller and a traceable origin matter more.
