Alphonso mango in Akola: what you can order
Akola is in Vidarbha, in the east of Maharashtra, and the Alphonso you want for the summer comes from the other side of the state: the Konkan coast. In Marathi it is the Hapus (हापूस आंबा), and it is the same fruit the world knows as Alphonso. Alphonso is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and Wikipedia says mango grafting reached Portuguese Goa through Jesuit missionaries.

For Akola we offer two origins by the dozen: Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso, both from Rs 1,849 per dozen.
Where the fruit comes from
Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast. Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139), and we source across 48 villages of that belt. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, and harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, for all our Alphonso.
Wikipedia puts an Alphonso at about 150 to 300 g and notes that it takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening. A box that leaves the Konkan therefore arrives with fruit at different stages. That is normal for naturally ripened Alphonso, and it is why we ask you to keep the fruit at room temperature and check it every day.
Choosing a box for an Akola household
We do not rank Ratnagiri above Devgad or the other way round, and we do not claim that one is sweeter or ripens earlier. Both are Alphonso. The practical choice is the size and the quantity.

Ripening and storing the fruit in an Akola summer
Vidarbha summers are hot, and fruit left at room temperature in a hot house ripens faster than in a cool one. So open the box when it arrives, lay the fruit out in a single layer and check it daily. Press gently near the stalk: a slight give and a sweet aroma mean it is ready.
- Keep unripe fruit at room temperature, away from direct sun and out of a closed hot car or terrace.
- Do not refrigerate fruit that is still firm.
- Once a fruit is ripe, eat it within a few days or keep it in the fridge.
- Cover cut fruit and keep it cold.
Ripening method is worth asking any seller about. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso.
