What Devgad mangoes are
Devgad mangoes are Alphonso mangoes grown in Devgad taluka, a coastal area in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Alphonso is called Hapus in Marathi. Devgad Hapus and Ratnagiri Hapus are the same variety from neighbouring parts of the Konkan, and both fall under the Alphonso Geographical Indication, GI No. 139.

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our Alphonso is sourced across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). We have sold mangoes since 2019, online since 2020, and have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.
The fruit itself: Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, and the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Because Indian-group mangoes are monoembryonic, Alphonso is propagated by grafting rather than from seed. Our Devgad Hapus guide tells more about the place.
Buy Devgad mangoes online: grades and prices
The Devgad Alphonso Mango page sells the fruit by the dozen, graded by the weight of each fruit. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. The table shows the listed grades. Prices change with grade and availability, so check the product page for today's price.
| Fruit size (each) | 1 dozen | 2 dozen |
|---|---|---|
| 150 to 180 g | Rs 1,849 | Rs 3,499 |
| 180 to 225 g | Rs 2,099 | Rs 3,999 |
| 225 to 250 g | Rs 2,499 | Rs 4,749 |
| 250 to 275 g | Rs 2,699 | Rs 4,999 |
| 275 to 300 g | Rs 2,999 | Rs 5,499 |

Smaller fruit suits daily eating and aamras; larger fruit suits gifts. We do not quote a per-kg rate, because a dozen of one grade is not comparable with a kilo of mixed fruit. For more than two dozens, the order-online page lists up to five dozen, and the same variety under the Ratnagiri name is on the Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango page. We do not rank one above the other.
Choosing a grade for Devgad mangoes
The grade is the fruit weight, and it decides how you will use the box. There is no best grade; there is a grade that suits your purpose.
- 150 to 180 g: the smallest grade and the lowest price per dozen. A sensible first order, good for daily eating and aamras.
- 180 to 250 g: a middle size, easy to cut and share at the table.
- 250 to 300 g: the largest fruit, often chosen for gifts.
Fruit of any grade ripens on the same timeline, about 15 days from harvest. What changes is the count of mangoes you get for the weight you are paying for: a dozen is always twelve fruits. If you plan to share the box, count the people, not the kilos. A dozen is twelve whole fruits, so a household that eats one or two mangoes a day will finish a dozen over about a week, as the fruit ripens.
How Devgad mangoes are harvested and ripened
Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so the mango does not fall to the ground. Harvest is done pre-dawn. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011; ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.
Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, so a box can arrive with some fruit firm and some soft. Do not read that as a fault.
- Lay the mangoes in a single layer at room temperature, away from direct sun.
- Check daily. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
- Do not refrigerate firm fruit; cold stops ripening.
- Eat ripe fruit within a day or two, or chill it briefly before cutting.
The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof. Our guide to ripening Alphonso at home has the full method.

Season, nutrition and the rest of the year
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. We do not sell fresh Alphonso outside the season. A website that does should be able to say where the fruit came from.
100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, and about 43 micrograms of folate, around 11% of the Daily Value. These are figures for mango in general, not for Devgad Alphonso specifically; we have no variety-level data and claim none. Mango also carries natural sugars, so ask your doctor or dietitian if you have a medical condition. We sell fruit, not health advice.
Outside the season the Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) is available all year. It suits aamras, milkshakes and kulfi; the aamras recipe works with either fresh fruit or pulp.
