Choosing the variety

An online mango purchase starts with a choice that a stall owner would make for you in person: which mango? India grows many varieties, and the names on a website can blur together. We sell three kinds of fresh mango and one pulp, and we describe each one for what it is.

  • Alphonso (Hapus), from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt of the Konkan coast, sold by the dozen in several grades.
  • Kesar, from Gujarat, sold by the box.
  • Pairi, sold by the dozen.
  • Alphonso pulp, sold in tins all year.

We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139) for Alphonso only. We make no GI claim for Kesar, Pairi or any other product. If a seller claims a GI tag for a variety, ask for the certificate number.

Fresh mango products at AlphonsoMango.in
Product Where it comes from Sold as Price (from)
Ratnagiri Alphonso Ratnagiri district, Konkan Dozen, several grades Rs 1,849, up to Rs 5,399
Devgad Alphonso Devgad taluka, Sindhudurg district, Konkan Dozen, several grades Rs 1,849
Kesar Gujarat Box Rs 999 per box
Pairi See product page 1 dozen Rs 2,799

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are the same variety, so we do not rank one above the other. The Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso pages differ in the origin and the grades on offer. If you want a single page that lists the dozen options, use the one-dozen Alphonso page, where the largest listing goes up to Rs 10,499. The Gir Kesar story is told on Wikipedia: it is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. Our Kesar mango and Pairi mango pages carry the current details.

How to read a listing

Two listings with the same headline price can be very different. Look for these details.

  • Unit. Is the price for a dozen, a box or a kilo? A dozen of Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade.
  • Grade or size. Bigger fruit costs more per dozen. Pick the grade first, then compare prices.
  • Origin. A district or taluka is useful. "Konkan" alone is a region, not a farm.
  • Season. Fresh Alphonso has a season. A seller offering it all year is selling pulp, cold-stored fruit or something else.
  • Contact and policy. You should be able to find an email or phone number and a statement of what to do if the box arrives damaged.

Price follows grade and season, so we show "from" prices and tell you to check the product page. We quote the dozen or the box, because a loose weight rate hides the grade.

What to ask the seller

Questions that cost nothing protect you from most problems. How was the fruit ripened? Where was it grown? Who holds the licence to sell it? We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and we ship from Mumbai. We source across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, we have sold online since 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.

On ripening, the legal position is clear. Selling fruit ripened with carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Our page on how to identify carbide-ripened mangoes explains why no home test is proof.

Common mistakes when buying mango online

  • Buying on the lowest price. A low price per dozen can mean small fruit, mixed grades or a different variety. Ask the grade and the weight.
  • Ordering out of season. If a site offers fresh Alphonso when the season is over, ask where it came from.
  • Ignoring the PIN code. Delivery depends on your address, so check it before you pay.
  • Expecting ripe fruit on arrival. Mangoes are shipped slightly firm so they survive the journey. Plan a few days at room temperature.
  • Skipping the ripening question. It is a legal matter in India, and a good seller answers it plainly.

Avoiding these five mistakes does more for your result than choosing between two good varieties. If you are ordering for someone else, tell them the box is coming so they can open it on the day it arrives.

Delivery and arrival

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. Delivery varies by PIN code, so we do not promise a fixed number of days for a city. Our delivery period guide explains the factors.

When the box arrives, open it on the day it arrives. Lay the mangoes in a single layer at room temperature, away from the sun, and do not refrigerate firm fruit. Check daily: a ripe Alphonso smells sweet at the stalk and gives slightly under a gentle press. If something is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in or calling 8369048029. For the ripening steps, see our ripening guide.
