Alphonso or Kesar: choosing between them
Both are loved, for different reasons. Alphonso, called Hapus in Maharashtra, is a small, saffron-fleshed mango; fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, and the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139).
Kesar is a Gujarat mango. It is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. It is a different mango with its own character, and many families buy both: Alphonso for aamras and special occasions, Kesar for everyday eating.
- Choose Alphonso if you want the Konkan fruit, graded by size.
- Choose Kesar if you want a smaller first order, since it is sold by the half-dozen.
- Choose Pairi if you want it on its own page, by the dozen, from Rs 2,799.
For help picking between the first two, our Gir Kesar mango guide and Ratnagiri Alphonso guide describe each in more detail.
How to buy fresh mangoes online without regret
- Check the season. Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season.
- Compare grade and count, not only price. Two dozens can differ by over a kilo.
- Ask how it was ripened. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011.
- Read the delivery message. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Orders received before 1 PM are dispatched the same day. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a delivery day for any named city.
- Be home to receive it. A perishable box needs a person at the address on a working day.
On arrival, open the box that day. If anything is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery to support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029. Shipping is shown at checkout; the shipping charges guide explains it. For other countries, write to us first; we ship directly to the UAE.
How much to order the first time
A first-time buyer usually orders too much or too little. A single dozen of the smallest Alphonso grade is a sensible start for a small household. The fruit ripens at different speeds, so it is eaten over several days rather than all at once, and you can judge the quality before ordering more. If you are unsure, start with a Kesar half-dozen, which is the smallest box we sell, and add Alphonso on a second order. Do not buy the largest grade just because it looks impressive; buy the size you will actually eat. Families who plan to make aamras for a gathering tend to order two dozen so that the fruit ripens together. Offices and restaurants can write to us about larger quantities through the contact details on the site.
Ripening and storing fresh mangoes
Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, so a box may arrive with some fruit still firm. This is normal. Lay the mangoes in a single layer at room temperature, away from direct sun, and check each day. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
- Do not refrigerate firm fruit; cold stops ripening and dulls aroma.
- Once ripe, eat within a day or two, or chill briefly before cutting.
- Store cut fruit in a closed container in the fridge for a day or two.
- If everything ripens together, make aamras and freeze it in small portions.
The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof, of anything. Our guide to ripening mangoes at home covers the method in full.
What is in a fresh mango
100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, about 43 micrograms of folate, around 11% of the Daily Value, and about 168 mg of potassium, 6% of the Daily Value. These are generic mango figures, not values for any one variety. Mango also carries natural sugars, so portion size matters for people watching their intake; ask your doctor or dietitian if you have a medical condition. We sell fruit, not health advice.
See vitamin C fruits in India and mango nutrition facts for the figures, and the Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) if you want the flavour outside the season.
