Online mango delivery in Mumbai

Mumbai is the city that grew up on Hapus. The fruit comes up the coast from Ratnagiri and Devgad, and generations of Mumbai families have a favourite fruit seller, a family connection in the Konkan, or a standing order. Buying online is a newer habit, but it answers the same questions a good fruit seller answers: what is it, where did it grow, how was it ripened, and who stands behind it.

How delivery works in Mumbai

Blue Dart delivers our boxes, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. That statement holds for the country as a whole, not for each Mumbai suburb, so the PIN code check at checkout is what you should rely on. Mumbai is a long city, and the answer for Colaba may not match the answer for Dahisar.

  • High-rise buildings: give the courier the wing, floor and a phone number that is answered. A lift or gate delay is the usual cause of a failed first attempt.
  • Offices: a reception desk can accept a box, so use your office address when no one is home during the day.
  • Gifts: enter the recipient's address and PIN code, not yours, and warn them that a box is coming.

Open the box on arrival. If any fruit is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in. For other parts of the metropolitan region, see our guides to Alphonso mango in Navi Mumbai and mango delivery in Thane.

Online or the Mumbai fruit market?

Crawford Market and the neighbourhood fruit stalls are part of how Mumbai buys mangoes, and good fruit can be found there. The choice is about convenience and paperwork, not about right and wrong. These are the trade-offs we would think about as a buyer.

Buying Alphonso in a Mumbai market compared with ordering online
Point Local market Online from us
Seeing the fruit You pick each one by hand You choose a size grade and the box arrives packed
Paperwork Ask the stall for origin and licence details GI Authorised User certificate and FSSAI details on our Brand Facts page
Ripening method Ask how it was ripened Ripened on hay beds
Effort Travel, carry, bargain Delivered by courier to your address

Whichever route you take, ask where the fruit grew and how it was ripened. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. The bucket test is a rough clue, not proof.

Ripening in Mumbai weather

Alphonso Hapus mangoes ready for online mango delivery in Mumbai

Mumbai is warm and humid for most of the season, and fruit softens quickly in that weather. Keep the mangoes at room temperature in a shaded, airy corner, spread in one layer, and check them daily. Do not refrigerate firm fruit. Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days, so a firm mango on arrival is normal. The sweet smell near the stalk tells you it is ready. Once soft, you can chill a fruit for a short time before you cut it. If you receive a large box, sort it by firmness on day one: the softest fruit goes on the table first, the firmer fruit stays spread out in the shade, and nothing sits in a closed carton, where trapped warmth speeds up the softening unevenly.

The monsoon usually reaches Mumbai around the end of the Alphonso season, so late-season boxes meet more humidity. Our guide to ripening Alphonso at home lists the signs to watch.

What the GI tag means for a Mumbai buyer

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India (GI No. 139). We hold the GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). The tag helps a buyer who wants to know where the fruit grew. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net. Our how to identify Alphonso mango guide lists what to look for, and our Brand Facts page lists our licences. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

Season, pulp and gifting

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. Fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season, but the Alphonso mango pulp tin is available all year. Offices and families in Mumbai often send boxes to clients and relatives; our gifting page and the guide to Alphonso mango as a corporate gift explain how to plan one. We also supply restaurants and hotels in general terms; write to us with your quantity and dates.
