The best mangoes in Pune depend on how you plan to eat them. Alphonso suits fresh eating, Kesar suits those who like orange pulp, and Pairi suits aamras. You can order all three from AlphonsoMango.in and check your Pune PIN code at checkout.
The best mangoes in Pune depend on what you want them for
People in Pune ask for the best mango, but there is no single answer. A mango that is perfect sliced at the table may not be the one you want for aamras, and a gift box has its own needs. We think it is more useful to match the variety to the use, and then to buy from a seller who can tell you where the fruit grew and how it was ripened.
We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our Alphonso is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. We started selling offline in 2019 and online in 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. The table below covers the varieties we sell to Pune.
| Variety | What to know | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Ratnagiri Alphonso | Pulp described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous; popular for fresh eating and gifts | From Rs 1,849 per dozen |
| Devgad Alphonso | The same Alphonso variety, grown in Devgad taluka | From Rs 1,849 per dozen |
| Kesar mango | A Gujarat variety named for its orange pulp | Half dozen Rs 999, dozen Rs 1,699 |
| Pairi mango | Often chosen for aamras | From Rs 2,799 per dozen |
| Alphonso pulp tin | Alphonso pulp for aamras, shakes and desserts, available all year | From Rs 590 |
Check the product page for today's price, because prices can change. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, and we do not quote a per-kilogram price. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is GI-certified Alphonso, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Kesar and Pairi carry no GI claim from us.
Where Pune buys mangoes, and what to ask in each place
Pune buyers have several routes. Local fruit shops are close to home. The Market Yard is the city's best-known wholesale market, where many people go for larger quantities in season. Online sellers deliver to the door. All three can work, and the useful thing is to ask the same questions in each place.
- Which variety is this, and where did it grow? Ratnagiri or Devgad is a firmer answer than "Konkan".
- How was it ripened? Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India.
- How many fruits make a dozen, and how big are they? Prices by weight and prices by dozen are not directly comparable.
- What happens if the fruit is damaged? We ask for damage to be reported within 24 hours of delivery.
Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 is the rule behind the second question. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. A bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof. Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus mango covers the other questions to ask.
Choosing mangoes for aamras in Pune
Aamras with puri is a Maharashtrian summer meal that Pune households know well. The pulp matters more than the skin here. Many households use Alphonso or Pairi, and some use pulp from a tin when fresh fruit is out of season.
APEDA lists Alphonso, Totapuri, Neelum and Kesar among the varieties used for mango pulp, so there is no single right choice. Pick the mango whose flavour you like when you eat it fresh, because aamras tastes of the fruit and little else. Our aamras recipe and our local article on aamras in Pune both explain the method.
Our Alphonso mango pulp tin comes in 850 g and 3.1 kg sizes from Rs 590 and is available all year. It does not stand in for a ripe dozen at the table, but it makes aamras possible when the season has closed.
How to pick and ripen a mango at home
Whatever variety you choose, the same handling rules apply. Fruit that arrives firm needs a few days, and Wikipedia notes that Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening, so patience is part of the process.
- Smell near the stalk. A sweet, fruity aroma means the fruit is close to ready.
- Press gently with your palm. Ripe fruit gives slightly without feeling mushy.
- Look at the skin. Colour varies by variety, and an even yellow is not proof of anything on its own.
- Keep firm fruit at room temperature. Cold stops ripening, so use the fridge only for ripe or cut fruit.

- Choose the variety and the dozen option on its product page.
- Enter your Pune address and PIN code at checkout.
- Open the box on arrival, look at the fruit and let it ripen at room temperature.
For a gift to a Pune address, or for several addresses, write to us with the quantity, the areas and the dates, and we will tell you what is possible. We also supply restaurants and hotels. Our corporate gifting guide lists the questions to ask any supplier.
Season dates for Pune buyers
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso, and the fresh mango listings stay closed until the new crop. Other varieties arrive on their own calendars, so check each product page.
