What fresh means when you buy Alphonso mango online
We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Fresh does not mean ripe on arrival. Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, and fruit that is fully soft when it leaves us would not survive a courier. Fresh means the fruit was picked mature, handled gently and sent to you while it still has a few days of ripening left.

We have sold Alphonso offline since 2019 and online since 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers including offline and marketplace sales. The most common worry in that time has been firm fruit on arrival, which is why we explain it here. A good box arrives at mixed stages: a few fruit ready to eat, most firm with a sweet smell building at the stalk, and some that need three or four days. That is by design. A box in which every fruit is uniformly soft and bright yellow on day one is the one to ask questions about.
- Picked mature, not ripe. Harvest is done pre-dawn, at Brahma Muhurta, by hand with a zela pole fitted with a catching net.
- Ripened naturally. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.
- Dispatched quickly. Orders received before 1 PM are dispatched the same day.
What makes Alphonso delicious, and how to tell it on a plate
Alphonso, called Hapus in Marathi, is a small, saffron-fleshed mango with a strong scent and pulp that is rich, creamy and non-fibrous. The fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g. The skin is thin and the stone is small for the size of the fruit, so a 250 g Alphonso gives more pulp than its weight suggests.

Ripe Alphonso smells sweet at the stalk end and gives slightly at the shoulder when pressed. The skin colour is not a reliable guide on its own: naturally ripened fruit is often uneven, with green, gold and a blush on one fruit. No home test proves how a mango was ripened; the bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof.
Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus goes through the signs in detail.
Ratnagiri and Devgad: the two Alphonso listings
We source across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. Ratnagiri is a district; Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both listings are the same variety, graded the same way, and we do not rank one above the other. Alphonso from this belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139).
| Fruit size (each) | Ratnagiri Alphonso | Devgad Alphonso |
|---|---|---|
| 150 to 180 g | Rs 1,849 | Rs 1,849 |
| 180 to 225 g | Rs 2,099 | Rs 2,099 |
| 225 to 250 g | Rs 2,499 | Rs 2,499 |
| 250 to 275 g | Rs 2,699 | Rs 2,699 |
| 275 to 300 g | Rs 2,999 | Rs 2,999 |
Two-dozen boxes are listed too, and the order-online page has larger options. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Prices can change, so check the product page for the current price.
Which grade to buy
Grade is the weight band of each fruit, and it decides both the price and how the box is used. The same dozen count can mean a 1.8 kg box or a 3.3 kg box, so decide what the fruit is for before you look at the price.

- Eating whole or cut: 180 to 250 g. Enough fruit per piece, and a dozen lasts a family a week.
- Aamras, shakes and kulfi: 150 to 180 g. Size does not matter once the fruit is pulped, and this grade costs least per dozen.
- Gifting: 250 to 300 g, even and unmarked. See the gifting page. For corporate gifting orders, shipping is extra.
- Off-season: the Alphonso mango pulp tin, 850 g and 3.1 kg from Rs 590, available all year.
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and fresh Alphonso is not sold outside the season. Our season guide explains how supply and size change through those months.
Keeping it fresh after delivery
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. Open the box on the day it arrives and lay the fruit in a single layer at room temperature, away from direct sun. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery to support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029.
- Eat the fruit that already smells sweet and gives at the shoulder.
- Leave firm fruit out; check it each morning. Do not refrigerate firm fruit, because cold stops ripening.
- Once ripe, a mango keeps a day or two in the fridge. Pulp and freeze anything you cannot finish, and use it for aamras or a shake within the month.
- Keep the box and packing until every fruit has been checked, so any damage can be described clearly.

How long does it take for Alphonso mango to ripen?
Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days. Fruit reaches you part-way through that, so expect a box at mixed stages: some ready, most firm with a sweet smell building, a few needing three or four days at room temperature. Do not refrigerate firm fruit, because cold stops ripening.
Are mangoes ripened artificially?
Some sellers use calcium carbide, which is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under FSSAI Regulation 2.3.5. We do not use carbide and ripen our Alphonso naturally on hay beds. No home test proves how a mango was ripened, so ask the seller directly and look for an FSSAI licence.
How do I identify an original Alphonso mango?
Look for a small to medium fruit, 150 to 300 g, with thin skin, a strong sweet scent at the stalk and saffron, non-fibrous pulp. Ask the seller for the district, the grade and the GI user certificate. We hold Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Alphonso under GI No. 139.
Which Alphonso grade should I buy for a family?
For eating whole or cut, the 180 to 250 g grades suit most families: enough fruit per piece, and a dozen lasts about a week. For aamras or shakes, the 150 to 180 g grade costs least and the size does not matter. For gifting, choose the 250 to 300 g grades.
